I'm trying to tackle my complete lack of motivation for exercising so I thought I'd check out this…read moregym as recommended by Amanda R. I got a 24 hour pass online for £5 to go for a look around and a go of the machines as well. The gym is easy to get to on Cathcart Road and has it's own private car park. We visited at a peak time and there was loads of spots so that's always good to know. To enter you need a pin number and then you stand in a very futuristic pod thing to be let in. You can sign up in the front area as well, in case you aren't already a member. There are lockers in the main area which means they are inside the secure doors, and visible to the whole gym. This was one of my worries about going to a 24 hour gym as I've heard horror stories about people's stuff being stolen - this seems like it might not be an issue here as you'd have to be pretty brazen to steal someone's stuff right in front of everyone. The machines are laid out in one main area which is huge - there is rows and rows of treadmills, cross trainers, bikes, rowing machines as well as a free weight area and machines. Then there's a proper weightlifting room if you're into lifting the heavy stuff. All the equipment I want to use is here, and they also have free classes (as well as some paid ones). There was a good mix of people and by that I mean it wasn't a total gym-wank gym so most people should feel quite comfortable here. The music was bad, but when is gym music good? Bring your own headphones and you'll be fine. I would have ranked this place a 4 star quite happily, but I needed some help from the staff when getting my padlock set up. She was so super helpful and nice about my extreme stupidity that it gets bumped up to a 5 star.

A month or so in, and I'm really impressed with this gym. For less than half the price of what I…read morewas paying before I get loads in the way of cardio stuff, loads of resistance machines and a good sized space for doing body weight stuff. There's also a really big free weights section, but I haven't used that yet. The facilities are really good: nice and bright with a good changing area, loads of lockers, and good quality equipment that hasn't been battered about yet. I've not dealt with the staff yet, but they all look really friendly. There are personal trainers there, and the details are on the wall, but it would be great if there were prices up there as well. It's probably on the website, but something at the gym would be great. All in, this is a brilliant deal. For the price, you get membership for here and the one in the city centre, which is an absolute bargain. If you're looking for a new gym definitely give it a go.

AG Fitness Training - Ladies who lift sessions are my favourite time of week

Andy's moved to a new custom-built gym on Garscube Road and if I could add another star to my…read moreprevious 5-star review then I would. The gym is amazing - there's a wooden deadlift platform at the back and a strip of artificial grass for a Prowler (which is a new bit of gym equipment to me, but one that I really like already) as well as all the usual kit - a couple of rowing machines, kettle bells, dumbbells, bars, racks, benches, all that stuff. He's got several classes a day which are all included in your gym membership - strength training, conditioning, olympic lifting, Ladies Who Lift, strongman training, even two yoga sessions a week. It's a large, open space and it's a really fantastic environment to train in. There are also a couple of new members of staff and everybody is super friendly. The trainers are professional yet a lot of fun and everybody gets along really well - there are no big egos here. They run client days out every few weeks (laser tag, rock climbing, I'm sure they're open to any daft suggestions you have) and it actually feels like you're part of a really friendly gym community. If you're looking for a place to lift some weights, get fit and have a lot of fun at the same time (especially if you're a woman who is thinking of doing more strength training, I can't recommend Ladies Who Lift highly enough), then this is the gym for you.

As promised, here's my review update now that I've finished the 6 week programme with AG Fitness…read more The first few weeks were coached with a strong focus on form and getting movements right, which I really enjoyed. As I'm a little bit out of fitness it was nice to get back into correct squatting position and deadlifts. Then in the second part of the programme we moved into a more full on workout - a 45 minute weightlifting session followed by some high intensive interval cardio sessions on the bike/rowing machine. OUCH. These are seriously a killer after you've already done a workout but they definitely feel like they're working. He'll also give you a programme to do in the house/at the gym for extra training other than seeing him which is great. I really enjoy that Andy takes the time at the start of our sessions to sit down and talk through what we've been eating that week. I'm terrible at keeping a food journal but if you did keep one, he'd look over it for you and suggest small tweeks for improvement. He isn't too focused on weight loss and instead is really encouraging about improvement in terms of form and strength which is really positive - we both leave our sessions feeling pretty damn good (even if we are in a load of pain). For the price (£185 for 6 weeks, 1 session per week for two people), I think it's worth the money. Andy is always on hand for advice (he has suggested that I can text him for food advice if I'm eating out, I haven't taken him up on that yet!) and Graeme & I enjoy getting trained together. The other reason I enjoy it is because (in my mind) it's a non-negotiable date in my diary that I can't get out of, so it's good to keep you going week-on-week. The gym where Andy trains from (Edenfit) is normally pretty quiet - on a Monday night, you're lucky if there's more than 3 other people there. I can't fault the facilities even though they aren't particularly slick or modern - they're functional, and that's what counts. Update as of August 2015: Andy is now temporarily based at a gym in the West End as Edenfit closed down. He's looking at getting his own specialised gym set up soon!

One of a notable chain of gyms opened here on thursday the 22nd of october and i was the first…read morecustomer at the doors! As we all know pure gyms can vary from place to place. Some of them are fantastic with ample areas and plenty of time to do your workout without feeling as if you hogging a machine or that you need to hurry. Others not so much with not enough machines for demand and overworked staff trying to keep everyone happy. Thankfully this one falls into the former. As i said its just new opened and it is huge! Its opened on the site of what, at one time, used to be the old kwik save at the back of the shawlands arcade and it is absolutely huge. As you walk in its a very open space with plenty of room around the machines. Id estimate about 15 treadmills, 10 bikes and a variety of cross trainers steppers and the like greet you as you walk in the door. Next to this is a studio type area for classes but that you can use if you need to when its free as well. In the corner you have a cycle studio for spin classes and such which has about another 20 bikes. Next to this is the open area with the weight machines. All the usual suspects are here such as the leg press, ab crunch, bicep and tricep pulls and for the most part they are in duplicate which will help with the demand as well. A couple of interesting machines which i rarely see are the ski machine which, as you may have guessed, simulates the movements needed in skiing and they also have access to a vibroplate in the corner as well. They also have access to two steppers which rather than the up and down contrivences have actual steps moving down and folding in at the bottom and re-emerging at the top. At the back we have a very well stocked weights area with some assisted lift machines where you can change the angle of plates and such to tailor your workout to certain parts of your body. As for the facilities you have a free water fountain as you would expect, 3 or 4 machines selling a variety of padlocks, towels, protein bars, shakes and water and down the other side we have changing rooms and showers which are all secured with the keypads which is grat for the security of your stuff. Also notably they have women's only section of the gym, unfortunately i cant comment on what is contained therein but its a nice wee addition. All in all a big gym, well built with plenty of variety and availability. I cant wait to go back now that im a member!

The egotistical/macho behaviour that I've seen at more than one martial arts gym before is very much not tolerated here, so it's great for women, or anyone who might feel a bit intimidated by the idea of walking into a 'fight' gym for the first time. The ladies boxing and kickboxing classes are a great place to start and, because you can take things at a pace that suits you, suitable for all fitness levels. The owners and instructors know what they're talking about, and will keep you right. Classes are usually a good laugh as well, and I appreciate the feeling that I'm getting fitter at the same time as learning what might turn out to be pretty useful new skills, rather than just running on a treadmill in a big glass box. Give it a go!

I have an arch enemy. A sworn nemesis. A Moriarty to my Holmes. A bad to my good. An X Factor to my…read morereal music. A Simon Cowell to my... eh... humanity. This evil being? Ma belly. I hate it. He (i shall call him he) sits there all day just quietly reminding me about the beer and pizza ans chips and whisky and chocolate and crisps and juice I've guzzled down. Perhaps you say, perhaps the ire of my anger should be towards the afore mentioned beer and what not and not the innocent outcome of my gluttonous actions? Perhaps, I say, perhaps you should shut the shut up! Anyway. Rightly or wrongly, i hate this wee dude and have finally decided to terminate his existence. But how? Well, since i'm writing a review about a gym, you may dear reader, assume that i'll be saying bye bye belly with the aid of exercise. You would be right. This i cannot argue against. So with a heavy belly and a heavy heart I joined the Pure Gym due to utter convenience (i work nearby) and the 'oooooh, that's cool and allows me to opt out if/when I cannie be arsed anymore' single month contract system. Nae year contract for this lasy barsteward! So, the beef burning beef? Well, as gyms go it seems to have all the gear you'd need to shed those extra pounds and tone up whatever's left over. I've just recently become a convert to running, so the appeal of these and a wee shower afterwards is pretty much all I'm after just now. Equipment wise, it seems to have all the mod cons. Runny things. Rowy things. Bikey things. Weight lifty things and what have you. It's clean (although the shower did smell a wee bit stinky), fresh, well lit and fairly welcoming even if the entry system does feel a wee bit like you're entering the safe zone in some sort of post apocalyptic zombie flick. Apparently the joint can be pretty busy at times, but today I popped in at around 2ish and it was fairly quiet. It'll do for noo. Classes and what not, other words, amenities, assistance and other relevant words. Yeah.

Sadly, I have only ever managed a trial membership: the cost, against using GCC's perfectly adequate facilities, made me decide against a longer commitment. It has brand new equipment, plenty of classes, both during the day and in the evening, and there are plenty of different rooms, making it feel more relaxed than most gyms. It never gets too busy- most gym memberships are hardly used- and the pool area is immaculate. It has several jacuzzis and sauna rooms, beautifully clean changing rooms and on-site massage. There's even a little shop, for when you forget your trunks. The downside is the cost- it pitches above the average, and the way that they ask about your current gym suggests that they are trying to offer individual deals that are most likely to attract you. They also do different deals for limited use, something I find useless: if I have a gym, I want to be able to use when I like, not just during the day. However, if you can afford it, it is far from the madding crowd.
