You could say this is my "Home" course, even though I haven't played here in 25 years! Originally built in 1924 when the surrounding neighborhood was developed, it was one of City of Dallas crown jewel public courses. When I first started playing at the age of 13,you could buy an annual pass for a ridiculous price. This allowed you to play as much as you wanted for a year. Boy,did my friends and I play! At the time, this was one of around 6 public courses owned and maintained by the City of Dallas. All were beautiful municipal golf courses that would never be built today. Over the decades they faded and became less well maintained until the city decided to "farm" out ownership and maintenance to a private firm. All of the courses including Stevens Park were closed and redesigned and are now better than ever. I'm glad to see this course is continuing to challenge golfers and nurture new people to the lifetime sport. read more

No driving range and I have a stand up cart and was charged extra $21 for trail fee..I paid and just before the 1st the Golf shop guy coming running out stating I need to pay a extra fee.. He stated he could due to city ordnance, I have played all city courses and not one asked me to pay extra fee. Not playing that house anymore or my group of 12. Also the cart is only 80 lbs. I haven't played at too many courses but I know I did not like this course. First of all, this is the worst course for a beginner to practice at. No range so you go straight to it. There are creeks at half of the holes and it ate four of my balls. It cost more to play here but it was not kept in good condition. They don't mow their grass often. I lost two of my balls bury in the grass somewhere. They also aerated the putting greens last week so nobody was making their putts. Most of the holes were on an up slope so it was hard to hit. I love this course. It's my favorite in the DFW area. I've always had good experience here. However today after my round, I went into the snack bar to get a cup of ice. It's 105 degrees out and I needed something to cool off. They wanted to charge 50 cents for the cup which is as expected. However if you don't have cash, they have to charge you $5 for the cup if you're using a card. The way the guy went about telling me was incredibly off putting and really makes me 2nd guess coming back. Over a 50 cent cup of ice. Call me petty but that's ridiculous. This course isn't hurting over a 50 cent transaction. Come on guys read more

The greens here have been absolutely atrocious since April. We had it on the blacklist for 3 months and decided to give it another shot today thinking "there's no way it's still as bad as it was". We had read mixed reviews and were unsure about whether we wanted to try this course, but we were in the area and decided to risk it. What a pleasant surprise! The course was lovely! Lots of fun quirks...old stone steps, tunnels under the main road, hills and hills and hills. The Dallas skyline in the background is a nice touch. Overall it was a fantastic experience. THIS GOLF COURSE HAS AN UNFRIENDLY ATTITUDE TOWARDS SINGLE GOLFERS. First, let point out that Steven's Park is a Dallas municipal golf course. The course is in good shape, however, they are less than fair and reasonable when it comes to accommodating single golfers, even on weekdays. I called yesterday to see if I could play as a single today and was told that I could walk on, but could not book the last slot with a threesome that had already booked, leaving 1 spot open. I can understand not letting a single book a tee time but if the tee time is already booked with three players, what is the harm in getting the last slot reserved. Makes no sense. I ended up having to wait around 45 minutes as other single "walk-ons" arrived before me. I have been playing golf for over 35 years and I have never experienced a similar policy with any of the golf courses I have played over that time. So I sent an email to the Director of Golf and here is his response: Our policy for single players is: We do not take tee times for singles. We work single players in on a first come, first serve basis from our walk up list. We do not add single players to scheduled tee times. Our experience has been that threesomes will add a player to complete a foursome and many times not call it in. So if you are a single player and you don't want to have to deal with this ridiculous policy, there are several great golf courses including Bear Creek, Cedar Crest (also a Dallas Municipal golf course), Riverside, Tangle Ridge, Waterchase and Thorntree that are 15 - 20 minutes away, that do welcome single golfers with no bias. read more

Would give zero if I could. Very unfriendly and maintenance of tee boxes, especially for the red tees, was non-existent. I don't think they care about the customers as the cart girl never stopped; she just drove around pretending todo her job. Can't believe she wouldn't want a tip. read more

The women's tee boxes were not kept well. Tee box on hole 9 was especially overgrown with weeds. The cart girl would drive around but never stopped moving and just looked straight ahead. She passed us 5 times and couldn't ever get her attention to stop. The greens had piles of sand on them. read more

Don't play SP in the summer or when it rains or if its rained within 2 days. Even when its 105* outside, the cart girl almost never comes around but the "cooler police" dives around constantly and physically inspects the carts for personal coolers. If you have one, they confiscate it. The carts shut down for 30 seconds if you go outside some invisible boundary, and many of the holes are cart path only. Still, they send multiple messages to the cart screen telling you to speed up play. Overall, there's kind of an oppressive feeling out there and thats just not fun. read more

I play a lot of golf. I go out on my own a lot, because it's easy to get out golfing when you're a single, even on a busy weekend. I meet a lot of interesting people that way, too. Many of them are also passionate about golf and like to recommend courses. Several different people on numerous golf outings have mentioned this place - Stevens Park Golf Course. I love trying new golf courses but it can be a little stressful; I dont know the lay of the land, I don't know what kind of people play there, I don't know where the bathrooms are (hey - your priorities change as you get older!!). But every once in a while, I suck it up and try a new place. I was hesistant to go here, because despite the numerous referrals that I try this place, there were very few reviews on Yelp for it, and zero pictures. I didn't think it would be very good. The reason why this course gets 4 stars as opposed to 5, is because it's on the expensive side, and many holes have a lot of road noise from really busy streets. And while the course condition was generally very good, many tees were just wet mud. Those were really the only drawbacks; the rest of the place was a lot of fun. I showed up on my own about 10:00 am on a busy Saturday and got out within 10 minutes. It cost $50 for 18 holes with a cart (that's expensive for around here!!) but I was willing to see how it was. The facility is great - there are two practice greens around the clubhouse - both in great shape. The pro shop is really well-stocked. The kicker about the clubhouse was the golf-cart-drive-thru. That blew me away - I've never seen that before! But at the turn (after the ninth hole), you get to the 10th tee by driving up onto and through the patio - like a mini-drive-thru for golf carts! I thought that was so cool. But you can park and run in and get a bag of beers or a hot dog or something. You can order a sandwich ahead of time from the 9th tee, but they weren't picking up the phone when I went. But I thought that was a neat building. The course itself is tough. One of the tougher that I've played. I didn't play all that great, but I guess for this difficult course, I did pretty good! The course has a lot of character. It's hilly (I'd never walk here), there are water hazards and twists and turns. Some holes are wide open, others are really narrow. There are two par-3s in a row, something I've never seen before. Oh - one hole - also something I've never seen: You have to hit your second shot UP ONTO A CLIFF. That was CRAZY but I actually DID it! I took a photo of it, but it doesn't do it justice - it's like trying to hit your ball up onto a ledge that's 2-3 stories high. If you miss, you're dead - it's a cliff-face. There's a sign saying you have to drop your ball on top of the cliff if you miss, instead of taking numerous shots to conquer it. That very same hole has an incredible view of Dallas from the green - it's really neat. That home sitting there must be big bucks. How can I marry into a family with a place like that? Anyhow, overall, it's a challenging course - it can be a little nerve-wracking, and it is on the expensive side, but I had a good time and I might try it again someday. Guy in the club house is a prick and was very rude to some first time golfers. It is sad because the course is actually decent but the guy in the club house is the scum of the earth. read more

Descent course but not great management. It should be all foursomes on this course. If you go out in 2 your gonna have a terrible time. Average 20 min per shot. It's too crowded and too many bad golfers to have twosomes everywhere. If they could get a handle on that it would be a descent day. read more

The course does not handle high traffic well. This leads to long waits, long rounds, and short tempers. Last time we played a 4some, it took almost 5.5 hours to play. The group behind us hit to us on multiple occasions while we were waiting on the group in front to finish. We called the pro shop about this, but no marshal was sent out to address the situation. One of the players in our group was nearly hit by a drive a few holes later. We pointed out to them we were waiting on the group in front and they became agitated and aggressive. Fewer tee times or better marshaling may correct the situation, but neither are being done. read more

As an avid golfer I had a very unsatisfied golfing experience and the course was definitely not worth the price. The course should play for $25 but instead plays for $55 during the week at noon. There are a lot of other courses that are as good or better for a fraction of the price. I would not recommend nor play this course again. Normally my go to course. Love the track and usually the staff is on point. I made a tee time to take a couple of friends from out of town to play today. Once we got to the first green, we realized the greens had been heavily sanded. It was a s**t show. We mentioned it to the clubhouse at the turn and they said they'd work with us after the round. After the round, we went back in and they told us this is normal. I asked if they typically tell people if they are sanding greens when they're charging full price. The greens keeper happened to be inside and he said "I'm going out to play the course right now." Then I asked, "Are you paying full price?" He smuggly replied, "No, I play for free." This will be my last trip to Stevens. Such a great course which has gone DOWN HILL DUE TO CUSTOMER SERVICE. Very unfortunate. This all could have been solved with a "rain check" value of $40. The course is in great condition post renovations. I have played a couple holes due to taking lessons there with Mike Sarap and had a great experience. He helped a ton with my game and was easy to book lessons and work with. If you are looking for lessons I definitely recommend him as an instructor. We did video work inside to get my swing looking good and then went out to the course to do situational work. Overall an excellent experience I couldn't recommend more to anyone looking to improve. I used to have to give myself a mulligans to break into the 90s, but now I am shooting low 90s consistently. read more

OK you work at a public course, not a fancy country club.... So get a grip on yourselves.... It was 100 degrees outside and I'm a big guy, when I play golf I like to relax, I'm not in a hurry and I'm out there to have fun.... But being told to hurry 5 different times when there was NO ONE behind me was irritating as all can be!!!! Had I not been sweating and already short of energy from the sun beating down on me I would have beat down on that so called golf pro.... Another pro..... Not a lot of people out there and actually played fairly fast considering we were there on a Sunday! But then again that could have been because it was so damn hot outside.... For my first trip to a Dallas municipal golf course, this was pretty good value. The twilight price of $23 (walking) was a steal. The course is VERY tight and pretty short. However, it emphasizes good chipping and putting as the greens are elevated and bunkers are nearby. There are HILLS on every hole, so be prepared for some extreme exercise in the middle of Dallas. The pro shop was filled with the latest in brand name equipment. They do have a putting and chipping green, however no driving range. This is a quick 18 holes, but beware, it is CROWDED on the weekend. read more

Golf in the City just got better! Being a native Dallasite and an avid golfer Stevens Park Golf Course has always been on my list of golf courses to play. Being a muni-course it placed low on the list but that might have to change after the round I played on the Newly renovation and designed course. It is good to see an old course modernize. Stevens is still a short course by today's golf standards but having played the round with a couple of long hitters it really challenges the long drivers with the three or for times a long drive is needed. It is a tight course but very fair....if you play the correct tees. The front nine did not change much. However, the back nine looked to change on every hole making the experience of playing the new design FUN! The back nine had some very clear views of the Downtown Dallas skyline..bring a camera. In talking to a few other groups playing the course I was told it is not advisable to play the course on the weekends if you are not use to playing 6+ hour rounds of golf. Stevens' low green fees bring in the golfers of all skill levels and they pack the course on the weekend. SOOOO, to enjoy the redesign of course for the first time it is advisable to play in the morning during the week. The only gig for Stevens was not on the course or outside facilities, but with the Grill..What No Burgers????. They took the Grill out..when asked why I just got a shrug from the attendant. The burgers at Stevens use to be worth betting on and now it is just sandwiches and hot dogs..BLAH! Other than that...I'll be back with a posse to play Stevens. read more

Beautiful municipal course in North Oak Cliff. The course offers a challenge to the average to low-handicap golfer. The rolling hills make it unique for Dallas and the tightness, while at first uncomfortable, quickly turns fun and is an exercise is course management. The renovation was fantastic and this course offers some incredible views of the Dallas skyline. The clubhouse is beautiful and the 18 hole is amazing! My ONLY complaint is that this course plays SLOW on the weekends! Too many crappy golfers not playing from the correct tees! I've seen another reviewer complaining about the marshals hurrying their game. I'm going to brutally honest-if you're fat and out of shape this course can be tough. The hills are awesome! And if you don't shoot in the 80's honestly, then play from the front tees!!!! The complainers are usually the high-handicappers playing from the white tees!!! While you can do this on a slow day, rules and common courtesy dictate otherwise. This is a gem of a course! It is a bargain and the location and beauty are the reason it is so popular. read more

Tucked in the hills - yes, HILLS (and trees) - of Kessler Park in South Dallas, Stevens Park is a great little neighborhood golf course. It's currently under construction ($7 million face-lift) but plans to reopen Fall 2011. I've probably played golf here 50 times and, while it's not a terribly difficult golf course, it's a great place to play because it's laid back, cheap green fees and beers are cheap too. Very short golf course at just over 6,000 yards but I hear that they're lengthening many of the holes during the construction work. It's also a great place to play because of the old neighborhood setting, big old trees and the hills. Stays pretty well watered but fairways can get a little hard during the heat of the summer. Twilight rate when the days are long is the way to go, something like $12. Only cons I can think of are short course length and holes are right on top of one another, so you better keep an eye out for errant shots and always duck when you hear "FORE!!!!" read more
