He does not listen to what you want and thinks he knows best, doesn't care what you want. I specifically told him I didn't want toner over my blond highlights and he did it anyway, removing all of the blond that I had! Imagine walking out of a salon looking completely different, drab and toned into a matte drab color all over. Most of Boston is against blondes, they will not allow you to do it and always tone over their work. No other city does this, since toner is for correcting mistakes. Here, they call it a 'glaze'. I will be forced to have it corrected in California now, just life changing and had to cry my eyes out for days. Go to this man at your own risk, he is arrogant and will do whatever he wants. Not sure how to begin to write about my experience with Steven Michael, but I'm giving it a shot. Just to give a little back story: all my life people complimented my hair _daily_ and I loved every minute of it. I LOVED my hair and I knew I was blessed to have those locks. I've spent top dollar on products and services for it throughout the years (from California [where I grew up] to New England, where I've lived the last 10+ years). I would only have the best. However, around 6 years ago, it began to change... a LOT. The loss of volume became so severe (and the texture so strange) that it sent me into a depression. I went to a dozen different doctors, got heaps of different blood tests--everything imaginable to find out WHY this was happening yet no medical professional could give me an answer. What was once beautiful was now gone. I was never so pro-active over anything in my life as I was in trying to find out what was going on with the structure of my hair. But I was unsuccessful in finding out anything and reached a point where I began researching wigs and/or shaving it off. Then, by chance, I made an appointment with Steven Michael right before Christmas from an online coupon and my world finally saw Heaven shine again. I got the Brazilian Blowout from him and with it a wealth of information about hair essentials and care (which not even one doctor helped me with). This man is not only a stellar stylist, colorist AND artist -- he's also a scientific/hair engineer who shares everything he knows so that you're well-informed and educated on the importance of hair tools, products, etc. You walk in, get the best cut and style of your life, then walk out invigorated and knowledgable with how to keep your hair gorgeous (without going bankrupt by the mega major manufacturers that are always selling you a bunch of hocus-pocus). He's a God-send as far as I'm concerned! It felt wonderful not to hate my hair anymore and I'm grateful to him for that. It truly is a experience to have SM to go to work on your hair, but only in a positive sense. I have gone to SM for almost a year at this point - and he cuts/styles hair, offers suggestions: (as he frequently says: "he is a educator first.") Also he always has a great story and lots of energy. Having lived in three cities (NYC/Boston/Washington DC) many of the services offered through SM are a down-right deal. Not to rag on services offered in Downtown Boston - but they are just not yet the same as DC/NYC yet. SM is cutting edge in terms of offering services similar to "grooming lounges" found in these other cities. A service known as the "pampered man" - basically a luxury hair cut and a classic hot lather shave are both excellent. But another trait that separates him from the pack is his knowledge of hair, and style in general. He is a master barber, which means you are getting a quality cut every-time. Not that it applies yet or may never apply (fingers crossed) but he is a master colorist as well - so you have options and my Fiancé has seen him for as long as I have and she loves going to him as well. I've been on the fence about writing this review for a while. I don't mind traveling a bit to get my hair done if it is worth it, I currently drive about an hour away for my hair. I read the good reviews for Stephen, and since Andover is much closer than my current salon, I figured I would give him a try. After a warm greeting, I sat in his chair and said that I do NOT want my wavy hair thinned or razored. Any one with wavy or curly hair will tell you this is a recipe for disaster. Thinning/razoring this hair type causes frizz, stringy ends, and split ends, especially if the razor is not sharp enough. He spun the chair around and said 'you cant tell me about texture... *I'm* the expert and I know whats best". Astounded at the reply I just sat there, while my poor hair got thinned and razored. I'm still kicking myself, months later, for not getting up and walking out of that salon right then and there. Before paying, I questioned the posted student discount advertized on his website, he responded that that was only for those '21 and under'. That restriction is not posted, and is not fair to make it up on the spot. I also had hair dye all over my face and the back of my sweater... and he let me leave the salon that way - I didn't notice til I got home and looked at myself in the mirror. Never again. read more

I had my first hair appointment with Steven Michael for a trim, and a few weeks later I am still amazed by how good this cut is. I have wavy hair which I tend to wear naturally up or down. Steven Michael took this into consideration along with my hair texture and face shape. This is probably one of the best haircuts I have ever had. Steven is an artist! Intelligent, able to explain pro's and con's of what is wanted and what is needed. Went in for cut and a few ?foils to lighten my too dark hair....which showed gray roots all to often! Such a relaxing setting, I actually napped and woke to a head of foil, each with tiny lengths of hair! When it was all washed out and dried, it looked perfectly natural, but brighter. The process was long and a bit painful I have never done a double process blonde before so it was totally to be expected. It took us about 4 hours to complete it.
