This place was a complete disappointment and the service was abysmal. We had wanted to go here for years but gave it time to develop. First red flag was they only had valet parking. When we got inside we were seated at the table right underneath the bizarre old movie playing which made no sense. Our waitress was terrible, didn't smile once, looked like she was annoyed that we even had the nerve to come have dinner there. My husband and I ordered drinks which for $16 each could have been better. We ordered the fried tomatoes and calamari for appetizers. We received the fried tomatoes which was literally three slices tomato (which was likely not even a full single tomato) for $17 and it was nothing special and looking back on the pictures the plate it was on didn't even look clean. Our calamari never came. When we told the waitress to forget about that appetizer that was never brought (just to make sure we weren't charged for it) she didn't even apologize for the mess up. Everyone's entrees we're pretty good. My husband ordered the fried chicken dish and it was great. I ordered the bronzino which while it was very good, the size of the fillet I got was a joke along with the minimal veggies it came with. Also the pot it came in had chips all over the edges. Maybe they were going for a rustic feel but I don't want to be concerned that shards of clay pot are in my food. My mother-in-law got the ribs and said she was shocked at how good they were. My sister-in-law got the roasted chicken and it looked nice and hearty. My father-in-law, however, got the burger and said at dinner and I quote "if I took this patty out of the bun and threw it at the wall it would bounce back". We were greeted by a host/ server who tried to seat us at a terrible table next to bar/ restroom entrance when there were ample tables next to window. We requested window seat, no problem. We started with a dozen oysters, very small but delicious. While slurping one down a man walk by and said "you didn't like it"? It was weird. He ended up being a manger. He could of introduced himself instead of staying something so off. We ordered our entree and appetizers during our oysters. We told our server we would both start with soups, then our entrees. We had another cocktail then came our soups with the entrees. We were very clear we wanted soup first! Surprised even the kitchen didn't question it. If server is not sure they should ask. Needless to say I was pissed! We ended up sending soup back and just had entrees. The steak and eggs were fine, however they sliced the steak. Hard to decide on what option! Brianna was our waitress- she shared it was her second day and I only mention this because she was adorable & a fabulous waitress. Started with an Easy Afternoon cocktail & my friend the Perroni beer on tap. My cocktail was delish & came with a sprig of basil- loved the scent with the tasty drink. Beer was perfect in a nice Pilsner. Didn't do apps as we are not big eaters so I opted for the Bronzino & my friend, the special Squid Ink Ravioli. It was early, maybe 4:30 on a Sunday so the restaurant was quiet. No one was seated near us. We were sort of in a corner and beside us was an empty table of 8. Wouldn't you know it- this crowd of 8 was seated so close next to us that two people if their chairs had been turned in the opposite direction, they would have literally been eating with us. So- needless to say, the tables were way too close to each other and like I said the rest of the restaurant was almost empty- maybe 4 other tables but on the other side of the room. This should have been planned better by the hostess. Even the people at the table of 8 were apologizing. Turned out we thoroughly enjoyed their company & exchanged numbers - go figure! Anyway, the food came out and it really was outstanding. The Bronzino I asked for gluten/dairy free. It was delicious- almost steamed in a broth with fresh spinach, fennel & strips of carrot. We went on Thanksgiving. I had been looking for a restaurant serving a Thanksgiving dinner earlier in the day and had run across this one but the app we were using didn't offer any reservations for it. But then we were driving around trying to find someplace that was open that was a little nicer than Gyro Master, and finally found this one, and the valet-rinas said they had space, so we went in, and the owners were at the door and they greeted us and seated us, near the bar, but it wasn't noisy. Our server, Anastasia, was so personable and attentive, and the owners stopped by to check as well. The restaurant specializes in oysters and other seafood, and the people at the next table definitely seemed to be enjoying theirs. Two of us had the Thanksgiving dinner, which featured turkey with gravy, mashed potatoes, stuffing, and brussels sprouts; I had a half-chicken and a kale salad. Everything was generously proportioned and delicious. For dessert, key lime pie and a VERY rich chocolate cake. And some reason, even though they seemed to have plenty of business that evening, they comped us the desserts. In sum, it's not just that we were happy to find any place that served on Thanksgiving, or was serving Thanksgiving dinner, it was that this was a place we would have been lucky to find *any* night. I found their online ordering service to be a little clunky, but was happy to see that we could try out a good amount of their menu items. Super tender) -lobster roll (good - the fries are probably better hot, but love the scallions on top) tomato & mozzarella salad (the tomatoes were super fresh) -chicken paillard salad (they forgot to include the salad part, which they quickly sent as a second delivery. the lettuce seemed more like shredded cabbage and the tomatoes were small...this was probably the most disappointing of menu items) -ribs (were fall off the bone tender!! Better than fink's bbq in Dumont) -paella for two (woah! We basically received a full tray - it was a huge quantity, with a large array of seafood that was cooked perfectly. The chicken was moist too. A bit on the smoky side, but impressed in how well it was cooked) -mushrooms & cauliflower (both great, especially the mushrooms) We had actually initially ordered shishito peppers but got a call that day that they had run out. Ordered a dry aged burger with gruyere, bacon and calamari. The burger was excellent. It was cooked to a perfect medium rare, had the perfect acidity and crunch from the veggies and the bacon provided the extra fatty flavor and texture that a burger needs. The fries were crispy and seasoned to perfection. The calamari's crisp was executed to the T and was seasoned lightly. First I should say I have been here before Covid, and "during" and should have written a review. The food was great, the staff was awesome and we felt safe (and warm with the heaters outside. I called tonight for an impromptu party of 12 for Saturday. Sorry they weren't first on my list but we have some kids with us and it wasn't on my radar initially. I called three places prior - all were a varied version of a pain in the a** on all levels. I called Stern and Bow - minor time modification and no big deal at all. Booked, text confirmation, done. I wish I would have thought of them first, but I will never forget to make them top of the list again. This new restaurant opened in 2020 during COVID. I visited here recently two times post COVID. I will summarize both of my most recent two visits here. This was my first time here. I reserved a standard table for two on Open Table. When we arrived I opted for a table near the main bar area where all the action is. The staff all wore masks. I started with their Blood Moon Margarita with lunazul tequila, orange liquer and agave for $15. I followed with my raspberry jalapeno margarita with muddled raspberry and jalapeno, Casamingos tequila. agave, and lime also for $15. When I ate the jalapeno it was not so hot or spicy. Both cocktails were nicely prepared. They have an oyster bar, however, we did not try their oysters on our first vist. We started with the fried pickles for $5, which were not so tasty. I have had much better smaller fried pickles at other restaurants. I enjoyed their Thai seafood bowl, with clams, mussels, shrimp, calamari, and spicy green coconut ginger curry. We returned here again with my larger family of six including two children for dinner, which I booked on Open Table. Again, we were immediately seated at a large table in the bar area, which I preferred. I enjoyed my two Mayan cocktails for $15 each. We also shared some oysters. We shared 3 Irish points for $3.50 each, 3 Kusshi for $4.50 each, 3 Yankees for $3.50 each and 3 Acadian Cups also $3.50 each. We also shared and enjoyed the $15 calamari. I enjoyed my $24 Paella. Russel the owner came over to greet us. I know Russel from his previous restaurants. My total bill was $381 less gratuities. 8 Gia G. accommodated our table needs. I love this area. Passed by this place almost daily when I worked off Old Hook Road... always wondered. It was our Christmas eve spot to check out.... for brunch. The outside is deceiving.... industrial but nicely put together. Comfy. Nice bar..2 of them.... and seating set up is comfortable. Service staff was attentive. Menu offered enough to get you salivating. Ordered blueberry pancakes... good. He got the fish with the heavenly creamed spinach. Bacon was delish. Coffee was POW! love it... reminds me of home. It was overall fantastic. Only negative was parking.... parked on street cause spots right by the fire pit.... well I went home with car smelling smokey. We returned as promised and were not disappointed by our decision! This time we tried their Lobster Roll, which was delightful! The bread was nice a buttery as well toasted but tender, the lobster was cooked well, every bite was savory!! The lobster roll was enough for me but they also gave a ton of fries to come with, which I had to share with the table. The Salmon and green beans was another recommended dish, the salmon was soft and tasty, no alterations needed and the string beans were the perfect pairing for a light yet delicious entree! I decided to try this new restaurant in the area and it was a beautifully renovated space. This used to be Azucar a Cuban restaurant that I used to frequent pre coronavirus. The place is really nice with a big outdoor patio. The inside of the place has been dramatically updated. The food was really good. We ordered as appetizers ceviche, colossal shrimp, and bacon wrapped wings. All apps were delicious and beautifully served. For dinner we ordered king crab legs, linguini with clam sauce, and a hangar steak. The food was all delicious however, my the hangar steak was served with fries on the same plate as the steak and they got soggy with the steak juices. A mistake that should have been avoided. Then they put an empty container on the plate that I can assume was meant for ketchup but was left empty. The waiter didn't offer any ketchup either. In fact the waiter didn't say much at all. The king crab legs were very nicely served, however, the menu didn't indicate that they were served on ice with cocktail sauce instead of warm with melted butter. Again the waiter was no help with that either. Then came desert which we were looking forward to trying. We ordered the bread pudding and the Oliver's Blackout. After waiting for quite a while the waiter comes back to tell us that they were out of chocolate cake to make it. So we switched to the Rustic Strawberry Shortcake. They finally cane out after another long wait and the shortcake wasn't a cake at all. It was a dry muffin with whipped cream and strawberries. My son didn't even eat it. The bread pudding was good though and plentiful for all of us to enjoy some of it. The icing on the cake though was the service, it was slow. The waiter had to called ever time we needed a refill on our beers and the place wasn't even full. However, what took the night was when a moron brought over our leftover food in a bag and knocked over a beer all over my pants. He didn't even apologize, he simply brought over a dry towel so I can dry myself off. He didn't even replace the beer which we paid for. The waiter again didn't even acknowledge it or remove the bad dessert off the bill even though we told him that it wasn't acceptable. I didn't see if the manager saw what happened but even if he didn't I would expect someone to come over and apologize for the problem that occurred and at the very least offer to replace the spilled beer. So even though we enjoyed the food and had a pretty good dinner I would have to give them 3 stars for the lack of appropriate service. I have never been to a place that would spill something on a customer and not even acknowledge it. read more

Overall disappointing experience. Stern and Bow tries to be a high quality fine dinning establishment but falls far short. We ordered the Lobster Roll and the Thai Bowl for dinner The lobster roll was incredibly bland featuring a few awkward sized chunks of lobster on a slice of bread. That's it. No other toppings were included. The fries on the side tasted like soft, tasteless chunks of baked potatoes caked in an excess of spices. The portion was too small. From previous pictures of the lobster roll on Yelp it is clear that Stern and Bow has been recently cutting corners and skimping on the quality and portion sizes. Not worth the 30 dollar price at all. The Thai bowl was advertised as "seafood, spinach, fidelini, and curry" on the menu. I assumed that the dish would feature some sort of rice or noodle base. Nope - it was soup, and it was not remotely Thai or Thai influenced at all. Couldn't taste any curry in the dish and there was barely any fidelini included. Portion size was not filling and again was not worth the 30 dollar price of the dish. Also, on the bill the "Thai Bowl" was actually called "Seafood Stew". If it was called this (which it should have been) on the menu, I would not have ordered it. Despite the bad dinner food, the dessert (the sampler) was okay but over priced and unfulfilling. The bread was good. Service was good and the ambiance was okay. Overall save your money and go to Wendy's. read more

The worst part was the prices! $65 per person for fried chicken and dry af bread pudding. They would not change or vary any item. We weren't even allowed to order a side of French fries!!! They actually had the nerve to charge kids meal $30 for chicken nuggets or a slider and fries. The service was garbage. She had a miserable face on the whole time. Never even introduced herself. We weren't even offered coffee/tea at the end. The ice cream with the $30 kids meal looked like they scooped it with a teaspoon. My family visited Stern and Bow on Father's Day and we were excited to try the restaurant. I have an elderly father in law, so we ate outside... in a tent in the parking lot. Not ideal ambiance, but we wanted a place to eat outside and this was it. They had a Prix Fixe menu for the holiday and it was extremely limited. For an appetizer, entree and small dessert, it was $65 plus tax. The appetizers were the highlight of an otherwise very average but EXTREMELY expensive meal for our party of 9. The Avocado toast, calamari and oysters stood out as appetizers. Unfortunately, dinner was next. Several of us ordered the Hangar Steak, and expected an entire steak but were rewarded with fatty steak tips. We ordered the rack of ribs and received, at best, half a dozen. Service was terrible even though the restaurant was slow. They forced you to use valet parking when the lot is feet from the restaurant. All in all, you can do better. read more

The first time I went I had a wine braised chicken dish that I have been thinking about since, it was so amazing. I decided to go back with family for my birthday dinner. I guess what I had previously was a special because it was not currently on the menu. 3 of us ordered the scallops with butternut squash risotto which was delicious but the portion was way too small only 3 scallops over a small amount of risotto and did not come with a vegetable or salad. The quality of the seafood at Stern and Bow would deserve a 5-star rating, but an apparent screw-up in the kitchen soured me on this fine-dining restaurant on my first visit there. My wife and I drove there for lunch on Thursday, and we were seated near the pizza bar, where the smell of woodsmoke from the oven was distinctive and eventually annoying. Only 2 other tables were occupied -- a group of 4 or 5 women who asked the waiter to take their photo, and three businessmen. No one was seated in the main dining room on the other end of the restaurant while we were there. I ordered the S&B Lobster Roll ($25) for my wife and the Fisherman Stew ($29) for me. My wife loved the lobster roll, especially the tender meat from an enormous lobster claw and the bite of cayenne pepper, and ate the side of shoestring potatoes with her fingers. And I was bowled over by the Fisherman Stew, especially the colossal head-on shrimp on top of shellfish, baby octopus and other seafood in a deliciously briny broth. A beautiful piece of "saffron aioli toast" was served on the side. As we were finishing, I recalled the menu had described the stew as containing "shellfish, white fish [and] calamari," but I didn't find any fish in my bowl. I asked our server, J. Mendez, to let me see the menu again to check my recollection. When he brought the check, I said there was no fish in the bowl he served me. He said there was supposed to be red snapper in the stew, but he didn't know what happened. I would expect him to offer me an adjustment on the check or some other gesture, but nothing was offered, not even an apology. Stern and Bow has been praised by critics, and is listed among the Top 30 best new restaurants in the state by New Jersey Monthly magazine, but my unfortunate experience at lunch -- especially given the fine-dining prices -- likely means I won't be returning. I have the New Orleans BBQ Shrimp which was Completely gross under flavored and over priced. 4 large shrimps cooked fully head and tail on, gross! A bit biased because we live about a mile away but always great to have a credible option without traveling far. Renovation and vibe is modern was was done very well...when you walk in, you would have no idea you were in the middle of suburban Jersey and not NYC. The fact they were able to create a trendy/urban feel inside the restaurant while being located here is actually a feat in itself. A far cry and complete transformation of the awkward space previously occupied by Agozar, the defunct Cuban restaurant it took over. Despite a packed Saturday night crowd, staff was friendly, professional, and timely. We arrived early and there was even waiter service for drinks while we waited for our table. Yes, the place is loud but I think that is the part of the attraction and life of the place, so this is not the place to have a quiet dinner. There's enough low key restaurants in the area that we don't need another family oriented (boring) restaurant. On the menu: oyster bar, seafood towers, rustic pizzas, steaks, fish, pastas and more. Good variety and very share friendly menu. The $85 ribeye is pricey if ordered as an entree alone but probably better ordered to share. The short sleeve genovese was a standout (short rigatoni with a 10+ hr braised ragu). The bigger seafood platter was more than enough for 4 (or I guess even 6 if you order other apps) and actually not a terrible deal. For a party of 4, we ended up with a bill at $150 per person (tip included) for several apps, entrees, the bigger seafood tower, dessert and maybe 3-4 drinks each person....not bad considering the bar tab we were running with our dinner. If you consider the $120+ it would cost you just to Uber to/from NYC for something similar, it seems more than reasonable. Definitely will visit again! read more

So glad I went back. The place is perfect. Food was amazing. Staff extremely personable. We went around 5:45 thinking we'd be able to get a table and we were very wrong. We were lucky enough to find 4 seats at the bar. Can't wait to go again! read more

We again went back to this restaurant for an anniversary dinner. I just love that I can make a rezi on open table! We started with fried calamari that has a really yummy spicy dipping sauce. We had shared special mussels, one more in a white wine base and the other a little Moroccan and spicy. The portions were huge! We also shared HOUSEMADE SQUID INK RAVIOLI that we did not care for at all as it had a very strong lemon zest flavor that was way too much in the sauce and in the ricotta.
