I went in to get my eye exam and new glasses. Tara and the girlthat did my exams were the best. She explained everything she was doing and why during the exam. I told her I've never had an exam like they do there. After the exam one person came on by zoom and did another short exam, asked if I had any questions. Then the dr came on by zoom and showed me the pictures of my eyes and explained everything and asked if I had questions. Everyone there treated me with respect, I was the first appointment and they spent time helping me decide on frames.Tara suggested the lens that change in the sun. Gave me a price with that included and I took them. Again the best groups of people there. Sorry I couldn't remember the girl that did m exam. I will definitely be going back. read more

My husband is a firefighter and during a training his glasses fell on the ground. The glasses were were found in the mud and had been stepped on. We thought they were a total loss but brought them to Sterling Optical to see what could be done. Tanya reassured me that they would do their best. She cleaned them and bent the frames back into place. She inspected the lenses which had only minimal damage. My husband is now wearing his repaired glasses again. Under new AWFUL management. Don't be fooled. TL;DR version: They do not have any doctors or techs in the office. Everything is done on Zoom. High schoolers are responsible for your eye exam. The place is run like a used car dealership. We had been going to Sterling Optical for many years, for both contacts and glasses. We started back when they were in Camillus Mall. Everyone there was always polite and professional. And they stood by their product. NONE of this is true today. Here is an account of my experience: When you call, they no longer answer the phone in a manner that makes you want to seek their help. It's obvious they are there to make a sale, as the new greeting says just that. Upon arrival, I was taken into the back room by a very young girl. There is no way this young lady has completed high school. Turns out she is the one responsible for my entire eye exam. She doesn't speak to me. She pushes the giant ceiling-armed device with the two lenses in it up against my face and proceeds to use Skype/Zoom to access some sort of vision tech pool. A man on the screen barely acknowledges my existence, only talking to the young girl, telling her what to do. Finally, he begins the "First, or second?" routine. I go through a few iterations and then, when I cannot see anything with either configuration, I say so. Here's how that went: Me: "I cannot make out any of the letters." Him: "Yes you can. You just told me they were letters." Me: "I am telling you I cannot make out any ANYTHING." He turns to the girl and asks her if the lenses are fogged. Sure enough, that was the problem. But he chose to call me a liar first? Well, it happened repeatedly. I was sweating. That's what severely menopausal women do. I told him I couldn't see it, he said I could, he talked to her, and she wiped my sweat off the lenses. But she only cleaned the lenses when I became exasperated with him. At this point, I'm concerned my exam results cannot possibly be accurate, but we press on. We move about the office area from room to room as she uses the different machines with me. Then I am returned to the original exam room to continue to the next part: the reading exam. Incidentally, she is still barely speaking to me. I have to ask questions to find out what we are doing. In the past, this consisted of holding a card in front of me with instructions to read the various lines. Not this time. The card was mounted on this thing that looked like a mini curtain rod sticking out from my forehead. Only this curtain rod desperately needed WD-40. She said she would slowly move the card toward me until I could read the desired line. However, she was incapable of moving "slowly" because of how jagged it moved. So I went from not being able to read it (too far away) to also not being able to read it (too close). I asked her to do it again and explained why. The same thing happened. I gave up. She tells me that now we wait for the doctor from the Skype/Zoom pool. While we're waiting, she tells me about her home life and now I'm positive she hasn't finished high school. Couldn't get her to talk to me about the exam, but she opened right up about her personal life. I asked if all of this Zooming was typical and she said yes and that they do not have techs or doctors in the office. NO TECHS OR DOCTORS. At all. We connect to the Zoom doctor. He tells me my results and I explain the troubles we had. He said that since my contact lens prescription didn't change much that he isn't too concerned. As far as the reading exam, he said the solution was just to go to the drug store and try out different glasses until I find what works for me. Why have an exam at all? As I'm checking out, I was perfectly clear that I would be buying contacts online and not from them. She - clearly intentionally - asked me two more time about buying contacts from them as if it hadn't been discussed. I left and went to the drug store. None of the glasses there helped. Turns out you cannot buy reading glasses above 2.75 in New York State without a doctor's prescription. I have never purchased reading glasses before. I now know I need a prescription of 3.50. Every single person associated with this outfit failed at doing their job. We will not be returning, and we will be telling everyone we know of our experience. read more

This place has zero customer service and they do not stand by their product. I do not recommend at all. They totally ripped off my elderly mother in law. when she went back to discuss her new lenses and how they were incorrectly done, the woman in the back of the store started screaming at her. A real class act. They offered to correct the lenses for an additional charge (over $100 dollars) but they should have fixed them at no cost since they were not done correctly to begin with. Nothing was ever resolved. They will not correct the problem. read more

So helpful and personable! Brought my mangled glasses that I stepped on and were missing a nose guard in with no appointment. Thought I would have to buy new glasses. They fixed them fast and with a smile! Just like new. Simply the best! read more

This place is amazing. Went in to get glasses, and had a great selection of frames. Cost of exam was a lot cheaper than other places around but they did an excellent job. Dr. Schwartz was friendly and thorough. My contacts were not expensive, and even let me know about a rebate for my contacts. Highly recommend them for your vision needs. read more

I have mixed reviews for this place. I like my glasses, but the lenses don't quite fit in the frames and they didn't fix to the problem when I went in last. My wife has had problems with fitment of her glasses, also they made several mistakes getting her lenses right. They are very polite and apologetic, but both of our problems haven't been resolved. read more

I have been using Sterling for probably 15 years or more. Recently I went to a different vendor, had to go back 3 times while they tried to fit progressive lenses and they still didn't provide a satisfactory lens. Apparently progressive lens brands have varied viewing widths and they couldn't come close to they width& quality I had through Sterling. I didn't buy them and went back to Sterling. I told them the problem I had with the other vendor and they immediately picked up on my concerns and made a recommendation. (There was a lot of distortion on the edges and they recommended the wider viewing width lens with narrower frames.) They ordered a narrower frame and had it in a couple of days. I've had no problem with these glasses since I got them three weeks ago. Down side is their frame selection but if you know what you want they will order anything and let you try them on at no cost. They are not a "fast food" vendor but have competitive pricing. read more
