My go-to shop when I'm in this neck of da woods. I'm a real paranoid maniac when it comes to cars--I always think there's something wrong, and because of that I'm super easy to take advantage of. These guys have told me "nah, you don't need that" on more than one occasion. And when I DO need that, they've always found a reasonably cheap way to do it. I hate to say it, but Steph's garage definitely does try to upsell. I left my car overnight one day to get a specific repair, and the the next day they called me while I was at work to tell me there were more issues with the car and wanted me to okay an additional job without me coming to the shop to see the issue myself. It's hard to tell if a car mechanic is trustworthy, and at Steph's you really get a dishonest vibe from at least some of the people who work there. read more

This was my first time working with Steph's, I was running around town when my motor started making noise. I do a lot of work on my own cars and I used to run used car dealerships. I may not know how to fix everything but I know what it costs. So a quick look and I know it's the water pump. Called around and was given bids from 1500-3300 There was great communication and they even offered to install a break line I had in the truck that I just had never gotten around to fixing. This place is a joke. Called the day before the schedule an appointment then drop my car off for a simple repair. I was told it would be done at 1pm at the latest that same day after spending 15 minutes trying to upsell me. I called 3 different times between 3pm and 4pm to see if they were done and nobody would answer the phone so I finally just drive there to pick up my car. I got there right before they closed and not only was it not done but they forget they even had my car and left it in their parking lot with the hood up and doors unlocked. read more

I have been there a bunch of times for oil changes for my vehicle. I have personally worked in the autobody field for 10 years they haven ever tried to upsell me on any repairs even though my one vehicle was in dire need of tires. My other vehicle has a transmission leak and even told me to go back to the dealer I bought it from and save money.. For me it is all about honesty they are human and after being in the business myself they are honest . But nobody is perfect and as the one person complained they called them at work well at that time dont you have the opportunity to say no let me come in there. Where is there dishonesty in that and is that person a mechanic do they know how to repair vehicles. They at least made the call which is the key your the owner and should have some knowledge of a vehicle and if you dont than you do need to trust your mechanic or autobody person to do the job the right way..... Even Walmarts and Valvoline oil changes do a upsell. Air filters dont cost you $12 or more but they will get you on it by showing u a dirty one... Bottom line there pricing is actually very fair and they communicate those are the 2 biggest things in auto repairs read more

I got back to my car at the Louisiana Ave park and ride last night, and disaster -- I had a flat tire. I knew Steph's was just across Louisiana on Wayzata Blvd, so I carefully maneuvered over there to seek some help. I did not catch the guy's name who helped me, but he was awesome! Brought my car right in and took a look -- told me a few minutes later that the tire was not punctured (hallelujah) and I just had a bead seal leak -- he took he time to show me what the issue was and explain how he would fix it and was up front and reasonable with pricing. No upsells, and they were very friendly. They had me back on the road within 30 minutes. Amazing and a life saver. I also noticed that are open until 10 PM -- yes 10 PM!! -- so super convenient for people who would like to handle their car business afetr work. I inquired about oil changes while there, and they told me they're only $25.99. They do any and everything here car related though, so a real one stop shop. If you work downtown, it's ride by a park and ride, so it's an easy drop off and grab the bus to go to work. Sold. I will definitely be back here for future car needs! read more

I absolutely love this place! I first visited them because I live close and have a bad habit of not paying attention to when I need an oil change until my car lets me know. They were able to get me in right away on my schedule and now I always go there for my oil changes. I still call and they can get me in within a few hours. As a girl, I often think car shops take advantage of adding extra services but these guys are very honest with what needs to get done on my car without upselling me (see below for prime example.) It's a smaller shop so for some bigger repairs/services they need your car longer because they bring it somewhere else - I haven't needed any larger repairs since going there, but I would trust them in the case I did. About a year ago, I went to Firestone for a major break repair. When I was finished there the guy gave me a list of things I "needed" to do to my car that added up to nearly $10,000. My car is a 2008 so I thought this was a little ridiculous. One thing I "had to get done ASAP" was replace my serpentine belt for about $2,000. Well, I brought this list to Steph's and asked about the belt. He looked it up as I could clearly see his computer, so I knew his prices were going to be honest. He realized the information was inconsistent as one thing said a price and another said it didn't exist. He then called someone to ask about it and the guy on the phone said my car model doesn't have it. He then tripled check by even going out to my car to confirm the serpentine belt did not exist in my car. I can't imagine if I brought my car to Firestone for this service, they probably would have charged me without even doing anything. We had a complex and lingering electrical problem. The dealer couldn't solve it but Steph's Garage did. The entire crew were great to deal with. They did a great job mechanically, but equally important to me is integrity and trustworthiness, and they prove themselves trustworthy and they work with integrity. I used Stephs garage for almost 2 years before I had any issues with their work and thought they were very honest and trustworthy. My A/C stopped working in my car so I decided to have them look at it and see what was wrong. They replaced the compressor, pulleys, and a few other parts totaling $600 and the A/C worked for about 3 months before going out again. They installed a new switch to bypass the computer and did a terrible wiring job. I wasn't aware of the awful job they did on it until I brought it to a friend of mine that is a mechanic. He informed me that I would have to replace the computer AND a $1000 wiring harness, totaling $2500 to get it fixed and that "they had really done a terrible job" on my cars wiring. They also charged me $40 to diagnose my check engine light and replace the gas cap - which costs $3 at a local parts shop. Prior to the A/C issues I was informed by them that my head gaskets were leaking and they suggested an entire engine replacement for between $3500-4000! My mechanic friend told me that this misinformation is typical of shops that do not know how to work on subarus, I had it done somewhere else for $1500. read more
