Dr Kolnik is just terrific. He is patient and friendly. He always seems to be ahead of the others on new techniques or equipment, and if you are interested, he takes the time to explain exactly what he observes and why he recommends what he does. In addition, his refractions are excellent. His hours are pretty convenient and even for routine exams, he always seems to be able to make time within a few days.He works inside the optical shop that shares the parking lot with New England Mobile Book Fair, but his business is independent of theirs. You can use that shop or take your prescription to any other optical shop as you prefer. Go see him. You can't do better! read more

Let me tell you about one of the better experiences i had: Newton Optica is awesome!! The styles of glasses they have cannot be found in many places I have shopped. Really it's a high end place with a great selection of glasses and competetive prices. I bought prescription glasses, prescition sunglases and regular sunglasses. They carry great lines and a variety of brands. Also, the doctor there is really excellent. When another eye doctor said I would never be able to wear contacts, she was able to put them in for me. She also trained and helped me on how to wear them and now I have no problem. She and her staff also went out of their way to find frames that fit and a comfortable pair of contacts. read more

I have worn contacts for 33 years and have mostly only gone to the chain stores. Two years ago I used a chain store (who now was recently purchased by another chain store) and it was a horrendous experience. All four employees that I dealt with that day had a I-hate-my-job vibe. I vowed that when the time came to go see the eye Doctor again - that I would do my homework. I ran out of contacts awhile ago so I searched Yelp extensively. Both Docs at Newton Optica were very consistently highly rated so I made the trek from Lexington and I knew I would be in good hands with whomever I was seen by. I can tell you that everything positive you read about Newton Optica is true. The store is not much to look at from the outside but all that doesn't matter once you step foot inside. The gals at the front desk are cheerful and helpful, Denise was extremely attentive and has excellent taste in picking out new frames and Dr. Kolnik was very prompt, efficient and thorough. I later realized that I forgot to ask the Doctor two questions but I am confident that I can call him and he will answer them over the phone. From what I have read on these Yelp reviews - Dr. Kolnik cares about his clients and is very proactive. The exam cost and contact lens fitting cost was not bad at all. I needed to replenish my contact lens supply and they told me that they would be less expensive than other folks. I said I was going to go to my car and make a few calls and scan the internet and after 30 minutes of research I marched back in and bought a year's worth! Their prices are less expensive than the optician chain stores, Walmart, Walgreens and 1800CONTACTS. A couple of reviews stated that Newton Optica had a poor eyeglass frame selection. Either things have changed, or the reviewers didn't realize that there are 20 times more of a selection out-of-view in the drawers under the displayed glasses or they were just very picky. The frame selection is great and diverse from basic frames to frames hand made in Paris. I had an appointment to run off to but I will be returning to buy a pair soon! read more

I discovered Newton Optica after doing an extensive search of eye doctors in the area. I finally decided on Dr. Kolnik after reading such wonderful Yelp reviews about his practice! I booked my appointment over ZocDoc which was extremely convenient. Appointments are available on 15 minute intervals. I received a phone call the day before my appointment asking for my insurance information. When I arrived to the office the next day everything was taken care of. I was promptly seen by Dr. Kolnik and received an eye exam. After the exam he introduced me to one of the women in the front office where she helped me pick out new frames. She was extremely helpful, she definitely knew the styles very well and helped me pick out a frame that would work with my face shape. Overall, quick and easy service and a friendly staff! I will definitely be heading back the next time I'm due for an annual eye exam. read more

I also booked my appointment at Newton Optica shortly after it opened because it was close to my house and the office itself looked very hip and modern. I didn't have very high expectations given that my experience with eye doctors in the past has been very "routine." I'm in and out, no real chit-chat, explanations, etc. It was all very assembly line. But not at Newton Optica. Dr. Vilkomir was EXTREMELY helpful, friendly and comforting. I went to her for an annual eye exam as well as a contact lens fitting because I wanted to wear contacts on my wedding day. She was wonderful in explaining the entire process to me, letting me know what options that I had, which options were best for me in her opinion, what my insurance would pay for, etc. When my contacts came in she showed me how to properly put them in and take them out. I was a little frustrated since I hadn't had contacts before and it was difficult to first learn how to put them in and out, but Dr. Vilkomir was so patient with me that she made the entire process much easier for me. Even though I was frustrated, she didn't let me leave until I had the hang of it ... and I was so glad for that! I have been back a couple of times since to have them tweak my glasses a little bit when they start to get out of shape, and they always do so happily. He is SO nice, and you can tell he is really versed in what he does, which made me feel confident that I was in good hands. My appointment was quick (but not rushed) and painless. I am afraid the main goal of everyone working in this office seems to be to extract as much money as possible from customers. The receptionist asked me for my medical insurance though I have EyeMed. She did not give me a clear answer why but insisted on it. A doctor's assistant made me look into a machine and took some scans without explaining why she was doing that. I assumed, falsely, that this was now a part of the eye exam. But later they presented me and, of course, my insurance company, with the additional bill for "scanning". I did not need any scanning of this kind, I regularly visit my ophthalmologist and have all necessary procedures done there. I only came to this office for my eyeglasses. It is not normal to perform unnecessary procedures without even informing the patient about the reasons and costs. Next, another assistant pushed me very hard for expensive polycarbonate lenses that I definitely did not need. In my case they are worse than regular plastic because they scratch more easily. She claimed, falsely, that no optical shop would agree to use regular plastic lenses with my glasses. The glasses came with one incorrect lense, apparently as a result of the prescription error. I could not see well. Still another assistant tried to convince me that I would "get used to it". They eventually replaced according to my old prescription. Overall, a costly experience. read more

I'd been seeing Dr. Kolnik for over 10 years when I moved 20 miles away from his Newton Highland office and tried two nearby Optometrists over the past 2 years. I returned to Dr. Kolnik today and I'm VERY glad I did. I need bifocal contacts and it is very difficult to get the prescription right to permit both good distance and good reading vision without reading glasses. The other two doctors failed. Today Dr. Kolnik succeeded. I'm writing this without glasses for the first time in years. Fantastic! Icing on the cake is Dr. Kolnik's sense of humor and warm personality, competent and efficient staff, and reasonable prices. You can't go wrong. read more

This place is great. If you want high-end brands and the latest LA trends (They have the Sex and the City 2 glasses in silver, gold and blue--hated the movie,LOVE THE SHADES), knowledgeable staff and an excellent optometrist with the newest equipment (seriously my exam was painless), go here. It was pleasant and fast experience. I also found the prices on all their shades to be better than most places and when you are buying Gucci, Prada, and the top brands from Paris & Germany everyone likes to mark-up but they don't here. For many years now I have been complaining that I am sick of wearing eye glasses and was always interested in getting contacts but was extremely skeptical to go ahead and actually do it. I heard that Newton Optica was open and decided to give them a chance because it was a conveniently located close to the T. Let me tell you, there friendly staff and knowledgeable doctor took all that skepticism away. I have been wearing contacts everyday now for about two weeks and I am mad at myself for waiting this long to get contacts. The Doctor was very patient with me and went over how to properly place the contacts in my eyes even though I was struggling with it for quit a bit.
