I have had numerous dentists in my lifetime and Dr. Coates and his staff are the best by far! They are excellent in keeping you up-to-date with preventive care and do an incredibly thorough job. They are very into prevention, and he is conservative when it comes to having procedures done. I have been to other dentists that told me I had to have a crown or other particularly expensive procedures. The last one was in Santa Monica, and I feel like I paid his mortgage for his house in the Palisades...unnecessarily. When you have a problem, Dr. Coates does a great job explaining all of the options and what he recommends. I don't have dental insurance and pay cash, but the rates are completely fair and reasonable. I tell everyone I know to go there! read more

Dr. Coates is fantastic. State of the art equipment. Friendly staff. Convenient hours. Very professional.

I hadn't been to the dentist in a few years and walked by his office two months ago and decided to call. The front office girls are very professional so well as the dental assistants. The office is modern, high tech and very well organized, not mention spotless! Dr. Coates is honest in recommending treatment that needs to be done. I work with many dental offices in helping them market their business and I am very confident that I choose the best dentist to take my family too. read more

I am sad that I moved too far away from Dr. Coates, he was my dentist for about 3 years and really helped me out as I had a lot of dental challenges. I also really like his office staff and hygienists. I recommend this office highly. read more

there isn't a single bad thing i can say about Dr. Coates. i have been coming into his offices my entire life and every experience has been great! i always get the same hygienist and she is super gentle, fast and friendly. i have also had teeth pulled when i was younger and a chipped tooth fixed, cavity fillings, etc and Coates is super fast, efficient and you cant feel his shots at all! my sister is deathly afraid of needles and she'll let him in her mouth without flinching. best dentist ever! i would recommend to everyone i know! read more

I've been a patient with Dr. Coates for 23 years. He is an excellent dentist, keeps current on the latest developments in the his field and is easygoing and honest. I think the negative reviewers haven't been to a lot of medical offices to see how they're run. And $50 for missing an appointment is a standard fee for specialists. There's nothing unusual about that. If you were uncertain before agreeing to have the work done, then why say 'yes?' The time for a second opinion is before the procedure. read more

Great dentist tells you what it is. No bs consultation was free. I got my tooth extracted it was painless.

Although the Doctor is fine, he is really in it for the money. The staff looks for every opportunity to charge you for expensive procedures without consideration for what you really need. I have very straight teeth and they even tried to convince me I NEED braces. They push services, not health. Their hygenists are only okay. One (Mary Beth) falsely diagnosed cancer when I had an inflamed taste bud. Really think twice about trusting your oral health to them. I believe their practice is unethical and I would sincerely suggest you get a second opinion before opting for any of their "up-charges". I can't imagine having anything important done at this office with their money-oriented philosophy. There are too many good dentists out there. read more

New patient. Very impressed with Dr. Coates, the staff and the office overall. Top notch care. Super cool report with cost estimates provided after the initial visit. No suprise charges. Dr. Coates tells it like it is and leaves it up to you to decide how you are going to proceed with your dental care. I am bummed that I waited so long to make an appointment! I highly recommend this dentist!! read more

I have been going to this dentist for a few years now and couldn't be happier. They are always very clean and friendly and I've never had to wait much to be seen. Their exams are very thorough and detailed, I've been to a couple other dentists in Long Beach and didn't have anywhere close to the treatment I receive here. I recommend him to anyone I know who is in need of a dentist because they will do the best job in town. 10/10 read more

I've been going to Dr Coates for the past 3 years and would recommend his practice to anyone looking for a professional, caring and thorough dentist. His hygienist Mayay is highly skilled and gentle, the front office staff is friendly and as caring as the clinical staff. All in all Dr Coates is my dentist as long as I live in the area. read more

My dentist experience was very similar to a trip to the spa! No kidding. The customer service was excellent, from the very first initial phone call I was pleasantly pleased on how friendly and accommodating the front office staff was while scheduling my appointment. They bent over backwards to find an appointment that worked with my crazy schedule and also called my insurance company and obtained all of my dental benefits up front. The minute I walked in to the office I was blown away by the ambiance of the newly remodeled office. The reception area was welcoming & beautiful, even though you hardly get a chance to sit down, since the Dr. runs exactly on time! I was use to waiting forever for my scheduled appointments at my previous dentist. I was very impressed with the hygeniest that cleaned my teeth and the newly updated equipment they used. They were very gentle and my teeth have never felt so clean! I have never had such a thorough exam... Dr. Coates does not miss a thing .I was use to the dentist coming in and just taking a peak at my X-rays. But during my initial exam, Dr. Coates actually examined tooth by tooth! Wow! After a lifetime of bad dentistry, rough hygienists and a serious fear of returning to the dentist, Dr Coates & his staff has saved me! Finally I've found a great dentist who takes the time to discuss my treatment and make sure all my questions and concerns are addressed. Couple this with a gentle, yet thorough hygienist with great tips on flossing and I think I have reached 'dental nirvana!' Not only have I made my next appointment, I have also made my six month cleaning appointment -- a first for me! I have already sent two family members to my new dentist and have recommended his service to many other friends and family. Thanks!" read more

Nice clean office and professional staff. Be very careful regarding your insurance. They tend to use the old "bate & switch". They will tell you they take your insurance only to find out after the fact that this office is considered out of network by your insurance. I called weeks in advance to have the office pre-check my insurance to avoid this out of network scenario, but according to the employees it is their standard operating procedure that they will never tell the customer if your insurance considers their office out of network. Very disappointing and sneaky. read more

I came here after chipping a front tooth. My regular dentist is a little too far for me to drive to anymore, so I did a little research on Yelp and I found Stephen Coates' office. I figured since he had so many really great reviews, I'd try him out. I'm SO glad I did! The ladies at the front were nice and helpful, the office is super clean and Dr. Coates did a phenomenal job on fixing my broken tooth in a very timely manner. It also doesn't hurt that it is walking distance from my apartment and that they accept my insurance. I highly recommend coming here! :) read more

Dr. Coates is extremely thorough, completing an initial exam on me more detailed than I had ever experienced. Plus, he gave me the charts to prove it. Now he has started fixing a few things, and he is the first dentist I have ever gone to that didn't need to stop and give me more anesthesia. My only caveat is that he could do more to explain what is happening when your mouth is full of appliances, dams, and fingers. He also has great appointment reminding and follow-up instructions. I've found my Long Beach dentist. read more

It's been awhile since I've been able to say I've had excellent service but after my first visit to Dr. Coates office I was hooked. From the friendly office staff taking their time to explain coverage and costs to the doctor himself taking extra care to make sure you experience is pain free, it was a great appointment. How great was it you ask? So great I've decide to finally undertake on the long journey to rectify my dental issues. Dr. Coates has been working hand and hand with my orthodontist in making my smile something I could only have dreamed of before. I recently had a small tooth removed in order to correct my cross bite and make the alignment issues I'm having easier to correct. Once again, Dr. Coates and his staff made the procedure quick and painless, all while accommodating my busy work schedule. Thank you Dr. Coates and staff I highly recommend everyone seeing you! I look forward to the smile I've always wanted and with your help and knowledge I know its just right around the corner. read more

I hate going to the dentist like most people; however if I have to go I would only go to Dr. Coates. Every time his staff is welcoming and getting treated is quick. Dr. Coates is great about finding out what is going on and making sure I only get treatment I need which is always painless and quick since he has his techs available to help. I have moved to Murrieta, CA and still go to see Dr. Coates because it is just such a better experience then other dentists' I have been to. read more

I love Dr. Coates and his staff!! I moved to Arizona and still keep coming back! I had a awful experience with a dentist when I was a young girl and I'm very picky when it comes to dentist. Dr. Coates is very knowledgeable and efficient. His staff is awesome and very easy to accommodate your needs. Definitely a 5 star office! read more

It's unusual to say pleasant or fun about a dental work! My visit to Dr. Coates was exactly both of those things. They had to reschedule me because I got the time wrong; yet, they accommodated me in the same day. Their office is spotless, front desk staff very professional. The dental hygienist Dana was exceptional, very knowledgeable and skilled. Dr. Coates, is really skilled, very pleasant, efficient and genuine. Even though I moved, I still make the drive to continue to entrust my teeth with them, They are experts. read more

I had a feeling before i went in for my appointment that Dr. Coates is a good dentist. His office staff is pleasant and on top of it. Dr. Coates is highly educated and loves what he does. I was really suspicious with the request for a second visit to review x-rays that this office would want to rake up a bunch of procedures that i don't need. But that was not the case. Dr. Coates is ONE OF A KIND! read more

The first and most important impression of a business is the receptionist, and waiting area. The receptionist's were courteous and the waiting area was very comfortable with drinks available. On my first visit Dr. Coates was friendly and his work was professional. I can't wait for my Dental Plan appointment with him to work on my Dental Needs. I highly recommend his Office. read more

You can not ask for a better experience when going to the dentist! The office is so neat and clean- and more importantly- always PERFECTLY on time! Everyone at the office is so pleasant and professional; from the receptionist to the hygienists to Dr. Coates. I would recommend this office to anyone! I for sure will never go to another office as long as they are open! I am currently undergoing Invisalign under the care of Dr. Coates and everything has gone so smoothly so far. I am SO happy I decided to go ahead with Invisalign- my only regret is not doing it sooner! read more

Dr. Coates is a great dentist. . .been using him for years. I would say that hygienists vary somewhat in quality. All of my experiences have been good except one, who was very "rough" in my opinion. . . but I spoke up and since then they have placed me with a different hygienist. The office is nice and classy, upscale feel, the employees behind the desk friendly and professional. I have rarely had to wait, and I'm in an out in less than hour for a cleaning. They do an excellent job in recommending things to help your dental care become more efficient like an electric toothbrush. After their gentle prodding, I purchased one, and it's made a great difference. Anyway, I will go do Dr. Coates as long as I'm around! read more

Dr. Coates is an amazing, talented dentist! I have been to several dentists over the years and they can't compare to Dr. Coates. He is very skilled and has a true gift. I thank God for my wonderful frient who told me about Dr. Coates. I will forever be grateful to her. The staff is also wonderful, friendly, and very helpful! Having a great dentist is so important and I'm so thankful I found Dr. Coates! read more

Very disappointed with the service. I went in for a routine exam in December and was told I needed a new crown. I have dental insurance thru my employer and was briefed by Dr Coates staff on the fees associated with my tooth. At that time I was given a printout of the breakdown of what my insurance would pay vs my cost. I paid $337 at that time. Fast forward to this past week when I go back to get my permanent crown. I was charged an additional $850!!! That's a total for $1250 for a crown out of my pocket. Nowhere on my printout was there anything about the additional cost to me. I simply cannot afford $1250 for one tooth out of my pocket when I have insurance!! The staff never briefed me on the additional cost!!!!!!! All she said was I guess the insurance company didn't pay what we thought they would!!!! I feel completely scammed by this office. I will never go back again nor I will recommend anyone. read more

I have been going to DR. Coates for over 25 years since he first took over this practice. Dr. Coates is a top-notch dentist and runs an excellent dental practice! He is truly someone who cares about his patients and their oral health! He may not be the cheapest, and yes he does sometimes have new and improved gizmos and treatments to sell you, but I would rather go to a dentist like this who does a good job staying up to date with the latest techniques and gadgets then go to some other quack down the street! Wouldn't you like to know about the latest dental technologies and how it can make your smile better? I know I would! I have been to other dentists a few times when I did not live in the area, and I saw how they care for their patients and run their practices. Dr. Coates is better because he has made a significant investment in the building and the comfort he can provide his patients who are coming in for something that very few people enjoy! His staff is also excellent and many of his hygienists have been with him for a really long time! I really like my smile and I owe most of it to Dr. Coates! I think he is the best dentist in all of LA County! If you want to go somewhere that will only give you the basics and is not interested in taking care of you for the long haul, then you might want to try elsewhere! I think having the nicest teeth possible is extremely important, but if you do not really care about having a healthy set of teeth, then maybe you should try another office? read more
