It's beautiful. Crowded, and very busy after about 10a alllllll the way through evening. Without a tour, you can head indoors and check out some stunning architecture...side note, pay attention to the spiral staircase....just, wow!

Stephansplatz is situated in the heart of Vienna. It's bubbling with energy and loaded with tourists and locals alike. Many main clothing shops are in the vicinity, as well as chain coffee shops and souvenir stores. The square is marked by the prominent St. Stephen's Church. You'll find horse-drawn carriages lined up to the side. In the winter, there's a cute Christmas market that wraps around the church. Chances are, if you're visiting this city, you'll end up here. Without even trying, this was among my first stops last fall. I love the vibe in Vienna, and this area certainly contributes to it well.

One of the most beautiful squares in the world! Surrounded by traditional Austrian architecture buildings, at the center of which stands Vienna's majestic cathedral. A must see for every avid world traveler. The area around the square is full of cafés, restaurants, ice-cream shops, etc. It's usually full of life until late at night.

As they say, all roads lead to Rome. Same for stephansplatz.

From there it is a ten minutes walk (sidewalk) surrounded by the woods of Vienna. The hills offer lots of possibilities for picnics. Situated in the woods of Vienna on a hill it is very famous and liked very much because of the stunning view all over Vienna. The architecture of the building itself is quite impressive, because the fundaments are made of huge gravel that keeps the groundwater from the building, made to last for centuries. This was the way of architecture applied at the beginning of the 20th century in alpine or wood areas. At the upper part of the building lots of wood was used which makes it quite appealing, too. The Krapfenwaldl bath or "Krawa" like most people living in the 19th district call it, is the most high-lying summer bath of Vienna in the Krapfenwaldgasse at the "Cobenzl". The Cobenzl is one of the hills at the outskirts of Vienna, in the 19th district called Doebling. The bath was founded in 1923 and named after Mr. Franz Josef Krapf who established a house in the woods called "Krapfenwaldl". After some time people were able to reach it by the Viennese Hoehenstrasse. Later on the little house in the woods became an inn. Today it is the restaurant of the bath. At a separate area the first skinny-dip places of Vienna was established. In 1978 two new basis were built. After renovation in 1989 it became the summer bath of today. 40,069 sqm offer enough space for 4,500 visitors. There is a sports basin, a family basin as well as a basin for children with a slide. Above all there is an adventure basin with massage jets, a restaurant, sunbathing areas, a beach-volley ball ground, a soccer ground and a natural children's playground. People are friendly, there are enough sun loungers, you can bring your own food, but the inn offers Viennese food, snacks at moderate prices. For handicapped people there is an adapted shower and WC, but to change from one area to another you need somebody to help you (wheelchair). Ideal for families, young people, older generations. Hats off, well done!!!!

There also is an ice skating rink but it's more like a go kart track with a meandering path instead of a large oval. The setting is really beautiful. I had read online about the large Christmas market and was anxious to visit, despite comments from locals about the lack of quality- and they were right. It's a really festive looking place with musical acts performing at the base of a giant Christmas tree but the more than 150 booths seemed to be mostly trash and trinkets. There were so many better markets especially the Am Hof square market and the one by the schronnbrun palace or art museum.

There are a number of Christmas markets in various parks and squares in the central city. These are within walking distance of one another so you can visit as many as you have the stamina for in an evening. The markets are comprised of small kiosks which sell Christmas ornaments, refreshments, etc. There are crowds but everything is clean and orderly. I was there with my wife and my daughter, her husband and their two children. With the kids it was an amazing Christmas experience. My daughter and I also attended a midnight mass on Christmas Eve at the Jesuit church. We aren't Catholic and speak no German but we felt very welcome and Silent Night gives the same uplifting feeling in either language. This was perhaps the high point of the visit for me. We rented a vrbo near the central part of the city and enjoyed dining in (including Christmas dinner) as well as the many restaurants nearby. I had not been to Vienna in many years and had forgotten what a lovely city it is. Great museums, dining and courteous, helpful people. Maybe it was the time of year but Vienna seems less crowded and touristy than many European cities have become. We had a really great family experience.
