I would definitely try to arrive early here before it gets crowded in the afternoon. I think it opens at 9 a.m. but got tickets for 10 a.m. as it was our first full day in Vienna and I wasn't sure how early we could get up. The palace is located about 6 subway stops from the Karlzplatz station. The ride took about 20 minutes or less. You exit the station and will see a long row of ~ 2-story buildings to one side. That is sort of the outer wall of the palace courtyard, so proceed along there to the entry gate. There is an information booth there where you can get directions to the main entrance. There is a lot to see here. We walked over 25000 steps the day we visited, and we skipped a few places. We bought a combination ticket so we were able to see a variety of areas that you'd otherwise have to pay for individually. When we arrived, we were a bit early for our timed entry so we explored the courtyard (front) and the rear garden. Both of these have a Versailles vibe. We then toured the palace interior. In addition to rooms for individual rulers, there were a number of ballrooms of various sizes, dining rooms, rooms for meetings or playing cards, etc. Given the huge building, many of the rooms are commensurately large. There was one enormous ballroom that was still seeing diplomatic service in the early 60s for some Cold War summit. Interior decorations were over-the-top ornate. This was an interesting tour. We had lunch at the Gerstner restaurant on-site. It was pricey, though. After that, we toured the L'orangerie (orange / fruit garden), another separate floral garden, and then wandered to the hedge mazes (which we failed to find the target areas). We stopped to relax for a few minutes at a children's playground nearby. We walked briefly through some side gardens screened from the main open garden plaza (rear) by large hedges. We skipped the zoo and climbed the hill up to the Gloriette Schönbrunn, a monument with a cafe at the base. Our ticket got us entry to the top plaza which offered nice views of the city and the place grounds. We hiked back and skipped the Children's Museum (in the main palace). We were tired by the time we made it back to the subway. This was a very worthwhile stop on our trip. It was a nice combination of history, architecture, art, and gardens.

The Schönbrunn Park and Grounds (Schönbrunner Schloßpark) is gigantic, impressive, and a beautiful way to spend an afternoon in Vienna. At the center of it all is Schönbrunn Palace (Schloss Schönbrunn), a gigantic yellow spectacle that can be seen from almost anywhere on the grounds. Well, it doesn't hurt that it's bright yellow against a ton of greenery. The palace has over 1,400 rooms inside, and it shows in the size and grandeur of the building on the outside. There is also another impressive grand structure on the grounds, the Gloriette monument, which now houses a cafe, but at one point was in remembrance of the demolished Neugebäude Palace, whose ruins also stand still on the grounds of Schönbrunn. At the foot of the Gloriette is the Neptune Fountain (Neptunbrunnen). It's a beautiful water feature decorated with gods from Roman mythology (with Neptune at the center, obviously, but other gods such as Thetis, there as well). Definitely photo worthy. The grounds also house countless rare plants that sit among several gardens and buildings. The Palm House is one such green house building you may have actually seen in travel photographs before. It has gorgeous glass architecture that is worthy of being Instagrammed and shared, at least. Aside from the plants, there are also many perfectly manicured and landscaped trees on the grounds, that create paths and walkways through and around the gardens and orangeries. The Schönbrunn grounds also house a zoo, that happens to be the oldest zoo in the world. So there are some things for kids to do as well, if you visit with the whole family. Best of all, to enter the grounds, walk the paths, and see the gardens, fountains, and exterior of the beautiful buildings - it's absolutely free (during opening hours). If you want to enter the palace, Palm House, zoo, or other museums or buildings, there is a ticket required.

You need to dedicate at least one full day. I was here for 10 hours and that was just the garden and exterior of the palace. It was over Easter weekend and wet weather so the museum and tours were backed up 4 hours to get in so we skipped and did the Palm house, maze, and hiked to the Gloriette. We declined the "all in one" pass and decided to pay as we go at each entrance. The Palm House was a good 20 minutes walk from the palace. It had three different temperatures for the plants. You have humid tropical, cold and normal. The maze was awesome. One that was about 7ft tall and the other was 4ft. Last, we hiked up the hill for another 30 mins to the Gloriette. I regret not paying to take the elevator to the very top. You can still get great views regardless. If we had time, I would have came back for a second day to explore other areas. It's so massive on foot. However, there's a little train that goes around at an extra charge.

The gardens are beautiful and large & free to visit. There are a variety of styles in the park: cultivated flowerbeds, fountains, paths lined with hedges and arches, glassy greenhouses, and some wooded areas with trails up the hill (beside the Gloriette). There are also various attractions that have an admission cost, but it's not necessary to pay anything to enjoy the gardens. Behind the Gloriette is a large pool and wooded area that can't be accessed. I saw a fox and some waterfowl back there. I love that some wildlife are making use of the park.

Huge garden area behind Schönbrunn Palace. Even in December it is beautiful. Mazes and trails of pea gravel. The crunch crunch of every step. Hundreds of trees. Surprisingly there can be green grass in December. As you stroll you'll stumbled on small statues. In bigger clearings you discover huge fountains and monuments. You can enter the Palace Park free of charge during opening hours. Special attractions located in the park - such as the Privy Garden, the Orangery Garden, the Maze, the Zoo, the Palm House and the Desert House will need the purchase of individual tickets. See how on a great day, I think it would be impossible to completely cover this park. On Christmas Day I spent over three hours in the zoo located here. I was amazed from 6am to 10 pm no matter the day of week or holiday, the hundreds of people that are here. Local joggers, tourists sightseeing.

Schonbrunn is a bit outside of city center but fast and easy to get to by metro - although there is a short walk from the metro station to the palace. The garden and extensive grounds are free, you only need to get tickets for the inside and the Gloriette - the latter gives you a slightly higher overhead view of the grounds and city beyond.

One of the main tourist attractions in town. We came here with Big Bus and directly walked in to the ticket office. Prices were kind of pricey to visit the castle and other areas. So we decided to skip the castle and walk through the beautiful gardens. We went to the Privy garden and paid the entrance as we thought we had to do this in order to walk around. Bad mistake. It was the entrance to only a small garden and then it has the exit to the large gardens. So if we had walked just a few more meters we wouldn't have to pay for this. And the lady in the ticket counter did not say anything even when I asked her if this was to have access to them. Anyway, we felt assaulted and we continued our visit. The gardens are huge. We only walked through some and through the middle. We did not spend time walking across all of them. We stopped for a snack at the zoo entrance to get some energy before we continued our walk to the Gloriette. It is a steep walk upstairs through a clay road, although it has different routes with different difficulty depending on your health. Once we got to the top we sat down for a while admiring the great place, which houses a restaurant. Once we gained more energy we continued our way to the bus station. Overall an impressive place that I recommended you to visit around if you are with kids. If it's only adults, you can take the time to visit the castle and walk through the many rooms it has. Enjoy!

Amazing place to see! The garden around is beautiful, the building is stunning and the views from the top (or bottom) of the hill are unbeatable in Vienna. You can spend a good amount of time here and won't get board. Loved the whole park!

This palace is truly magnificent. I loved everything about it except for strict guidelines for no photos. There is ONE room where photos are allowed. The Audio Guide Boxes give a great description of each palace room and are FREE - a big plus. There are a multitude of different levels of tickets. We went with the Grand Tour ticket and it was 44 Euros for both of us to get in. After the palace tour,we walked a bit through the garden. We spent about 2.5 hours there. There is A LOT more available amd the palce is SO huge, you could easily spend an entire day and a lot of money seeing more. The Children's museum looked very popular for groups with kids. They also have a train ride to get around, as well as horse carriages. If money was no object, there are endless possibilities for fun. I don't know why they are so strict about photos in the palace, but just be aware, there are plenty of staff on hand to enforce this. Masks are required inside the palace. There is no charge for Backpacks to be kept behind the counterwhile you do tour. Everything is clean and well organized. A definite must see while in Vienna, IMO.

This has to be #1 site for all visitors. The surrounding gardens are very well maintained and unique (no more Ickes required for the park). If you are staying close by and into running - trying the park for your jog/run. The place itself is quite impressive but if you have already seen the imperial palace then it gets a bit monotonous (seen one, seen 'em all - you get the idea). Luckily you have a choice of the short tour or the grand tour. Unless you want to vicariously live like a royalty, I recommend spend more time in the gardens.

You could easily spend a full day here! It was such an enjoyable tour and so much to see within the palace. Then the gardens are just as incredible. You can walk around for hours, rest in the shade with a book, eat an ice cream and so much more. They even have nightly concerts which is very cool. Would highly recommend.

Wow! I mean simply wow! This is a wonderful park. Schönbrunn Palace Park is so huge. At first, looking from the outside of the entrance, I had no idea how massive the area was. There are so many impressive fountains, statues and monuments. The special attractions at Schlosspark Schönbrunn include the Palm house, Kronprinzengarten, the Orangeriegarten, the Maze and the Schönbrunn Zoo, and the Wüstenhaus. We were here on May 3rd '18 and it was quite hot. Make sure you wear good walking shoes and take water although you can get it at the restaurant there. The maze and the labyrinth are quite fun. There are also restaurants, a zoo with pandas and other entertainments. The entrance to the park is free. Since 1996, the castle park together with the castle Schönbrunn in the list of World Heritage by UNESCO.

Schönbrunn Palace is gorgeous and huge! I'm happy that my Europe tour group took us here. The audio devices were very helpful to explain each of the rooms in the palace. It's also available in a few other languages besides English too (ie: Japanese, Korean, French, etc.). Note: I think that you can't take any pictures inside the palace. This place is still a must see.

Very child friendly and there was heaps of room for kids to run around, playground included. Outside of the playground area was just green space for people to chill out. In addition to that which parks usually have, this one also had water pumps - where I think it is necessary to just hold down the handle rather than to pump - but I would not drink this water myself it might be very portable, and safe for pets. This park also has some machines which aid in working out. These are for public use, and are outdoors. While they are not as nice as the ones you would find in a paid gym, they can help you burn a few calories when you're out in the park. Also, has many large grassy areas which are good to lets dogs play off-leash and let out their inner hound. I'm sure the park is even lovelier in the summer!
