The Volksgarten is situated in the center of the 1st district and can be reached by almost all undergrounds and trams no. 1,2 and D.
The Volksgarten ("folks' park") is a public park in the Innere Stadt, the First District of Vienna and part of the Hofburg.
It was built over the city fortifications destroyed by Napoleon. It was opened to the public in 1820.
It is almost opposite to the city hall of Vienna and beside the "Volksoper", the small opera of Vienna.
Within the park you have quite a lot of other sights.
The park is famous for its rose gardens, the Theseus temple (1819-1823) by Pietro Nobile and the monument for Empress Elisabeth of Austria-Hungary (Sissi) (1907) by Friedrich Ohmann. There are also statues of the poets Franz Grillparzer and Karl von Hasenauer.
Triton and Nymphe fountain by Viktor Tilgner is one of the most famous fountains in Vienna. In this park there are even little bridges for the ducks!
This is the only park in Vienna that has its own doggy park.
From time to time there are also events and then there are stands in front of the park offering bakery goddies, Austrian souvenirs, etc.
Because it has been still kept in the original form, that's why there are also lots of animals, birds flying right in front of the tourists to the flower bushes, ducks waddling around.
There are lots of hidden places for everyone, where you can enjoy your break eating maybe one of this great "Schnitzels" or "Sachertorte".
There are also lots of arcades inviting for long walks... maybe together with the ducks.
Hats off, city of Vienna!!! read more
