I bet it's gorgeous in the summer with all the greenery, and colorful flower beds. It's perfect for a nice stroll or enjoying some quiet time away from the city's hustle. Loved the famous Johann Strauss monument and the small ponds with ducks. There are plenty of benches to sit and a nice playground if you have children.

Gorgeous foliage of the Gingko trees glow even in the overcast weather and were a perfect autumn show stopper. Strolling through this lovely park takes you back to simpler times when you actually see an occasional jogger and couples holding hands as they stoll amongst the trees and glorious sculptures. It is fun to stand on the bridge above the train rail way and watch the train come in and stop of the station. This park is huge and you could probably spend all day here.

You will often find musicians here- we saw a string group one day, a guitarist on another and an accordion player on yet another day! You can buy a picnic lunch at Billa (just around the corner from the park) and eat in the park. Across the street is the larger Sigmund Freud park which is also charming.

This place can serve that purpose nicely. Because of its vicinity to the Schottentor Universität U-Bahn station (U2), which is also the stop for many tram lines, it's a very accessible park, and also near many bakeries, cafes, and other great places to get lunch or a snack. If you're hoping to visit the church, do know that it's closed on Mondays, but open Tuesdays through Saturday from 9-13 and 16-18; and Sundays 9-13.

Free to the public, you can walk through as you go from the Upper Belvedere Palace to the Lower Palace. Beautiful baroque fountains and statues making this one of the best photo opps in Vienna. There also is an ice skating rink but it's more like a go kart track with a meandering path instead of a large oval. The setting is really beautiful. I had read online about the large Christmas market and was anxious to visit, despite comments from locals about the lack of quality- and they were right. It's a really festive looking place with musical acts performing at the base of a giant Christmas tree but the more than 150 booths seemed to be mostly trash and trinkets. There were so many better markets especially the Am Hof square market and the one by the schronnbrun palace or art museum.

There are a number of Christmas markets in various parks and squares in the central city. These are within walking distance of one another so you can visit as many as you have the stamina for in an evening. The markets are comprised of small kiosks which sell Christmas ornaments, refreshments, etc. There are crowds but everything is clean and orderly. I was there with my wife and my daughter, her husband and their two children. With the kids it was an amazing Christmas experience. My daughter and I also attended a midnight mass on Christmas Eve at the Jesuit church. We aren't Catholic and speak no German but we felt very welcome and Silent Night gives the same uplifting feeling in either language. This was perhaps the high point of the visit for me. We rented a vrbo near the central part of the city and enjoyed dining in (including Christmas dinner) as well as the many restaurants nearby. I had not been to Vienna in many years and had forgotten what a lovely city it is. Great museums, dining and courteous, helpful people. Maybe it was the time of year but Vienna seems less crowded and touristy than many European cities have become. We had a really great family experience.

After changing plans on the fly for one of our days in Vienna, we had a free morning. We had read…read moreabout the island park in the Danube and opted to check it out. We took the subway to the island - there is a dedicated station there. It is then easy to walk down a ramp and access the park. We spent about an hour here. There is at least one central paved axial path/road in the center. There were no cars but plenty of bikes and runners. In the part we explored there were several places to access the shore (mostly to view buildings on the Vienna side or to check out the waterfowl). There were also several parks (kids' playgrounds, one dedicated more for adult exercising, one with interesting water-themed activities for children (including a pull-yourself-along raft). There were also occasional people fishing and a few apparently homeless groups and their tents. Overall, the vibe seemed pretty safe. There were at least one or two public restrooms (fee-based) that we passed also. It appeared that there might be some food options opening later as well. If you want a break from museums and history and just want a quiet stroll near the river, this is a good option.

It was decided to make an artificial island, make it green, and make it beautiful. I visited here once just out of curiosity, and was very glad I did! It is another awesome place to walk, run, bike, or swim if you are up for it. There are several platforms for that too. There are plenty of bars and eateries along the strip (near the U-Bahn is particular). I have tried them, so I cannot speak for the quality. Love the Booteria! It was an awesome experience to try boating! Particularly great on a warm sunny day! If you are visiting Vienna from out of town, unless there is a special event taking place, it is not a place to top your list of places to visit. However, if you are in Vienna for an extended period, it should definitely be on your list!.

I purchased the Skip-the-Line Guided Tour with GoodViennaTour via Viator. I was very satisfied with the tour, the price, and the guide (I wish I remembered her name). The Summer is more recommended as you can picnic and tour their "Maze" (think Harry Potter and Goblet of Fire maze scene). It was still beautiful and majestic in the Winter time. While staying in Vienna, the Schönbrunn is easy to get to from any U-Bahn Station. You transfer to the u4 (Green Line) and Schönbrunn has its own stop so you cannot miss it! In the Summer, I rented a bike and rode from Karlsplatz to the Schönbrunn and it only took 45minutes while riding through the NaschMarkt. (Note: If you ride a bike or scooter to Schönbrunn, you must leave it on the North Side of the Palace so make sure you have a lock!) Give yourself PLENTY of time (3-4hrs) so you can tour the Gardens, Fountains, Maze, and hopefully get a grand tour of the Schönbrunn Palace. A must see in Vienna, Austria!
