It was built in the early 1920's by the Socialist government in Vienna as they developed a network of indoor and outdoor pools all over the city. Swimming has always been one of Vienna's main sports pursuits. You can notice this at the scores of beaches in the summertime that are filled with hundreds of thousands of people on a hot day. But in colder weather, we turn to the fine municipal indoor pools. Of course today, the Amalienbad has a full spa attached as well as other health and fitness activities. And underneath the main pool is a regulation training pool for competitive swimmers to train in. So after 100 years the Amalienbad is as busy today as it was on the day it first opened its doors.

So far I haven't had any trouble finding space to swim laps -- we'll see how it goes once school is out. There's also an onsite restaurant that makes a great Greek salad.

Enjoyed the time there in amongst the Palm trees and if you look carefully you can see the shiny colourful chimney of the Wiener Hundertwasser Incineration plant!
