It was built in the early 1920's by the Socialist government in Vienna as they developed a network of indoor and outdoor pools all over the city. Swimming has always been one of Vienna's main sports pursuits. You can notice this at the scores of beaches in the summertime that are filled with hundreds of thousands of people on a hot day. But in colder weather, we turn to the fine municipal indoor pools. Of course today, the Amalienbad has a full spa attached as well as other health and fitness activities. And underneath the main pool is a regulation training pool for competitive swimmers to train in. So after 100 years the Amalienbad is as busy today as it was on the day it first opened its doors.

We happened across Diana Bad on Lilienbrungasse, and it was great! They have a wave pool, a slide and other fun water features. It is open until 10pm on weeknights and 8pm on Sundays. It really added some fun to the trip! Not a place to swim laps however, more geared to children.

Its small but several features to enjoy some quality family time. They have lifeguards on duty. Co-ed lockers but they have private changing areas and separate showers. The prices are reasonable (especially for an American--we're not used to cheap day-spas.) I can't speak to the quality of the salon, massages, etc. as I haven't indulged, but I'll amend my review if I do sometime. My only complaint is that, the last time I was there, there were quite a few very loud teenage boys running around, slamming their chairs around, yelling, etc. and nobody from the staff stepped in to ask them to quiet down (we were not in the children's section of the Therme!)

Located on an island in the alte donau, you can get there from the U1 VIC stop via a free shuttlebus or a 10-15 minute walk. Admission is just €5 for the day and €3.9 after 13:00. They have several pools, a diving one and a fun one for the kids. There are lots of trees to help offer some shade and reprieve from the sun. Several bakeries and snack bars help keep you fed during a long day of swimming. Swimming in the river is nicer here than other beach clubs, because they have smooth stones living the river bottom for you to stand on. Other clubs make you stand in the mud of the river, which isn't very nice.

This is the worst bath house I have ever been to. This place is the nearest bath house to me in…read moreVienna, but everytime I have been there I have gotten rejected by the grumpy staff-lady (the same one every time), even though it says on the plaque outside AND on the bad's webpage that it is OPEN for my age group (I'm in my 20s) during the hours I have tried visiting. It wouldn't be half as bad if the lady working the desk would care to at least TRY to explain to me why I'm not allowed into the bath house during the times I have tried visiting (I've been there at different times and weekdays, so there's no logical explanation for it being closed all the time, or I'm just plain unlucky each time). She is always looking at me with contempt and a "you are dumb for even trying"-tone when she says it's closed, whether it's the sauna or the swimming pool. NOT RECOMMENDED, a real dump that should replace some of their staff members and give proper information to the people intending to visit their place.
