I came here because Knight Auto (known for fair, transparent AC work) has merged with Steger Service and Dave is on staff. Good to know going in. The inspection was $45 and reasonable. The leak test was $220, which is on the high end, and importantly it does not roll into the repair cost. Once you've paid it, you're committed. so be aware of that before authorizing. The leak test found two leaking Schrader valves. Simple fix, but the labor quote came in at $483 with no hourly breakdown offered. When I asked about the 36mo/36k warranty listed on the estimate, it turned out to only cover those two valves, not the rest of the system they inspected and passed. Staff was friendly and the work got done. But if you're coming here expecting the pricing and transparency that made Knight Auto's reputation, just know they've inherited Dave's clientele without fully adopting his principles. read more

Steger Service unable to fix 2020 Volkswagen Jetta air conditioning. I brought in my 2020 Volkswagen Jetta to have the air conditioner repaired July 2025. Steger Service informed me that the AC service ports were broken and that replacing them would most likely repair the AC system leak. Based on those representations, I paid for replacement of the AC service ports, related labor, and an AC refrigerant recharge. The air conditioner appeared to fixed temporarily. One month later, the air conditioner stopped working again because the refrigerant had leaked out. The AC system leak was not repaired, and the refrigerant I paid for was lost. Update May 2026: I have requested a refund via phone and e-mail. I also reported this to the Better Business Bureau (BBB) and St. Louis County Small Claims Court. read more

While traveling out of town, my serpentine belt slipped off the engine. It was a simple fix--just needed to be looped back on--but I lacked the tools and had to call AAA for a tow. The nearest AAA-affiliated repair shop was this location, so I called ahead to give them a heads-up. I spoke with Amber, who was immediately dismissive and unhelpful. Despite explaining that I was from out of town and that this was a quick five-minute job, Amber insisted they wouldn't look at the car until the next day. She also said they wouldn't use the perfectly good belt I had and would require me to buy a new one from them at a markup. Add in unnecessary labor charges and I was looking at $500+ for a job that takes five minutes--plus a night in a hotel waiting for the "repair." Luckily, the tow truck driver saw what was happening and confirmed this shop is known for being difficult. He offered to help and had the belt back on in under five minutes. Problem solved--no thanks to this shop. Amber was rude, unaccommodating, and seemed more focused on price gouging than helping a stranded traveler. I would never recommend this location to anyone, especially if you're in a tight spot and need honest help. read more

My Infiniti G37 broke down and started smoking. I called a few local garages to help me fix my car but they were all booked up until end of September/ October beginning. Chris was the only one who agreed to even take a look at my car. I dropped off my car and I got an extremely detailed review of my car via text the same day. They had identified the issues and potential fixes. Carol was great at running through options with me and providing me with the pricing upfront. They were great at keeping me updated via text or calls on the progress. They never forced me to do any additional repairs or updates to my car. I arrived at 8am sharp and the attendant (Phil was his name) informed me the appointment I had called to pre-schedule was apparently only a suggestion, as the mechanic wouldn't be in until 9-930. Why was I told to come at 8 then? Great question. He then advised me to reschedule and seemed to want me to leave. So I did. Never mind that I took time off from work to attend to auto repairs. I dropped it off the day before my appt bc I knew it would die as soon as I turned it off again. They replaced the battery the SAME DAY instead of making me wait until my appt the next day. FINALLY, after 6 different automotive repair shops and thousands of dollars, Chris Steger and his team were able to fix the starting issue on my 2003 Chevrolet Malibu!! The air conditioning went out in my 2011 Ford Fiesta. We took it into Steger as first time customers. The first year Fiestas are notoriously problematic and when the staff attempted to fix the AC, the computer crashed and the battery failed and the car wouldn't start. They researched to discover that this tends to happen in these cars if the batteries are disconnected. They called Ford: 50,000 computers on back order. Chris was able to find one through another company and had it installed and the car running. I was crying with relief and gratitude. Unfortunately, this was short lived as the replacement part only worked for 48 hours. Even with this unexpected turn of event, I felt that Chris and team had done their absolute best. Chris continued to call around to scrap yards and sending guys out to the dodgiest to try to find the part. With his head hung low, he told us there was no hope. So, reluctantly, my husband and I started car shopping. After ordering a car online, we received another call from Chris. In a last ditch effort, he put the original computer in an oven (I know, right?!) and was able to melt and re-solder the connections and got the engine running consistently. He called us and we immediately took the car and sold it to a Ford dealership! Brought my car in with an intermittent problem of the trunk not opening (using the buttons or key fob ). They tracked it to a broken wire in the bundle. They quickly repaired it and there has not been any issue since the repair. Skilled technicians, great service, cost much lower than the dealership plus no two to three week wait for them to "look at it". read more

I had an issue with my car air conditioning. My regular mechanic said the symptoms seemed to indicate a problem with the passenger side air mix motor. Unfortunately he doesn't fix air conditioning, so I went to Steger Service. I told them what my mechanic had said when I called, and when I dropped off my car, but they wanted to do a diagnostic test to be sure. I accepted and they found a $1,200 repair that was NOT the air mix motor. When I went to pick up my car, I confirmed that they had checked the air mix motor and it was fine. They confirmed that it had been checked and it was fine. I paid for the repair and left. Guess what? Within 48-hours my car started having the exact same problem as when I brought it in the begin with. Guess what the diagnosis was? A faulty AIR MIX MOTOR - a $400 repair. TL;DR: slightly on the expensive side, but even considering that, if I could give more than five stars, I would. Honest, fair, and overall good folks here. They don't try to sell you random crap you don't need and will charge you fairly for labor. They will call you to check to make sure you actually want something fixed (sounds like a common good business practice, I know, but unfortunately some places just make assumptions), and they honestly want you to come out on the right side of the matter with your best interests in mind. They are always respectful and not condescending, which has definitely been a problem for me at other shops as I am a female who probably appears easy to take advantage of. Chris or one of the either guys in the shop is always willing to come out and answer questions if Carol (who manages the desk) is not able to (which she often is). One other nice thing they've started doing more recently is sending you text updates about the status of your repair, which is a big plus for people who are phone call-averse and/or work jobs that don't permit dropping everything to receive a call from the mechanic. Their prices are reasonable enough if maybe a little high for the area, but regardless I'd pick honesty and quality over pricepoint for this type of thing. Besides, the money I've probably saved here on what would otherwise be unnecessary "repairs" recommended by less-upstanding shops far outweighs a few extra dollars on labor here and there. A little bit pricey for the labor, but one of the only honest mechanics left in town. Carol at the desk is always friendly, and the guys do a great job in the shop. I've been there several times even just to get a tire plugged after running over a nail. They don't take credit cards though so be prepared to have either cash or the checkbook out. read more

I went in for a zip-tied fender liner (which my car dealership body shop told me to replace) and these guys actually told me that is not necessary.
