This place is located in the Mandarin Plaza off of Broadway, which keeps it a bit hidden from general passersby, and I honestly feel like that adds to the vibe. They have a small selection of food that changes with their day time and night time menus - all delicious. I loved that during my day-time visit, the barista(?) was able to recommend me a drink based on my preferences and it was like getting something I wanted that I didn't know I wanted... if that makes sense. Steep has been on my list for quite a while, so I seized the chance to check this place out while in town. I got there as soon as it opened on Friday at 11 am. It was pretty empty. I ordered their seasonal mandarin green tea and made myself comfortable at a communal table. The tea was extremely refreshing and not sweet at all - really just perfect. While there, I also ordered their Boon Boon noodles with vegan sauce. This had a bit of a kick but very tasty. If you're in a rush, frankly, I wouldn't recommend Steep. But if you can appreciate things done slowly and with care and you're happy to spend at least 30 minutes or so here, then I'd definitely recommend Steep. Just a heads up that things are on the pricier side - this seasonal tea was about $8. read more

Genuinely used to enjoy this place, whether on a date or in a bigger group, the experience was good. Last two visits have been awful, though. 35 min wait for ice cream and canned ready made tea. Super, super simple, but perfectly done. I loved this dish. My only complaint is that doubling the portion would've been beautiful! (It was that good). A bit pricey but the chicken was very flavorful and tender, the cabbage (I think), on the side were delicious, and the side sauces were very cool additions too. I loved this dish. We discovered this place bc we went to the Chinese Lunar Celebration at the Beverly Center and met one of the owners at the tea tasting. First off the restaurant is super cute, fresh and eclectic ! AMAZING- my favorite Cocktail bar in LA. Steep specialized in tea-based cocktails using tea-infused spirits. I highly recommend their Far East Side, which has sesame oil in it - I was a skeptic until I tried it. Their place is pretty small, and always packed when I go. They also have outdoor seating. The owners do a lot to support the community, which I appreciate. There are frequently small business markets or popup kitchens that they setup. The staff is very friendly and always has thoughtful recommendations. I brought my girlfriend, and the head bartender gave us free shots of his specialty tea whiskey. It's a tad on the pricier side ($17ish a drink at time of writing), but well worth it if you're looking for more of a lounge type setup. I loveeee tea houses! I really enjoyed the cold brew teas, especially the green tea with jasmine flowers. I also got the Pu-erh cold brew and liked it, but I think the green tea is more easily acceptable if you're not a tea drinker. My friend got the hot oolong tea, and I liked it but felt like it wasn't as special as the cold brews. I found it a bit weird that the stone fruit option for dried fruits was literally just a bowl of preserved plums (i love preserved plums but usually only eat 2-3 and was hoping for peaches and apricots too). I think next time I would try the other fruits or the pastry. I would love to come back in the future for their other teas and food, AND definitely to try Steep After Dark! 3.5 star. I wanna fall in love with this place so badly, but I left there a bit disappointed. Let me explain: Ambience: 20/10. Love love love the ambience- it's calm and serene. I feel all the stress and burden I carry just melt away when entering this space. Food: 6/10. We came on a Friday night. The menu is pretty small. To be exact, there were 6 items (including appetizers) and 2 types of desserts. I guess it's a teahouse, and not a restaurant. However, because I saw on Yelp photos that they had noodles and rice dishes, so I was expecting to have those. But I guess those items have been removed from the menu? IDK. We ended up ordering sake, umami snack platter ($14), pork belly bao ($12). The price was HIGH! The snack platter consisted of 4 different types of dried snacks that you can purchased from 99 ranch. ( See the photo and you will understand). One single pork belly bao for $12 is a lot, but the bun was nice and pillowy soft. The pork belly was tender-ish, but a bit too sweet. We received a complimentary starter, which was popcorn seasoned with chili and sesame oil. It was really good and had a nice kick to it. Bad planning on our part that we came at night and didn't try their tea because we didn't want to end up staying up all night. (I know it's a tea house and should be reviewed based on their tea! My bad.) Service: 8/10. Staff is friendly, but not much of a service to speak of, as you order at the cashier and they bring you food. My bf and I have lived near Chinatown for over a year so we've been meaning to try Steep LA for quite some time. My biggest regret is not coming here sooner!!! There is ample street parking on weekdays. I've heard there is a lot so that will prob be your best bet during prime time/weekends. The interior is organic, modern style with a cozy vibe. There are a few tables and lounge areas. There are several outdoor seats on the patio - when the weather is nice, the outdoor seating experience is just perfect. The traditional tea ceremony experience is incredible. Thorough service and explanation on steeping times. We opted for the Lishan. Clean profile and again, the wait times were on point. No bitter after taste at all. I love that each guest gets to pick their own tea cup - really cute touch. Now, the food.. AMAZING. My bf and I were wowed. We love hainan chicken so we've ventured far and wide for some of the best. Steep comes incredibly close to some of the best we've ever had. The flavor profile is on point.. how they're not known for this IDK. But trust me, this is a must order. Even if you were initially coming for just tea. We also ordered the boon boon noodles which was like Dan Dan but with some Szechuan spice (from the chili oil). Again, really impressive dish that we were not expecting. Noodles perfectly Al dente and the flavors were well rounded and delicious!! Overall, my bf and I agreed that if we're trying to impress people, we're bringing them to Steep first. This particular review is for a pop-up that happened to be at Steep 3/31/23 (IG: at-ganchic / at-jobaeee or GANBAE, haha). Not sure if pop-ups are a normal thing here. The space itself it pretty amazing. It's like being at a very neat/clean person's house but you're eating or drinking tea at the couch or counters. (Unsure of their normal modus operandi so a little assumption on my part). With regard to the location, they share a courtyard with Angry Egret. We ordered: -kimchi quinoa -Mussel jjigae -Mackerel jorim ssam -Mixed grains -A carafe if the shiro sake -Hodduk a la mode for dessert The dishes felt inventive and had some cleaner / healthier substitutions like the quinoa/ grains in place of rice but still retained traditional Korean flavors and aesthetics. The food was beautifully presented and I loved every dish. Super flavorful and not too spicy, but a little kick to let you know it's there. We ended up using the grains to mix as much of the leftover sauce as we could. The dessert was amazing! Sweet, but not too sweet, with a wonderful crunchy texture (much like crispy rice) of the hodduk juxtaposed with the soft cold ice cream. There was a bit of a nutty hint possibly from barley? Just delicious. I already had Steep bookmarked because I want to experience their place in its normal mode of operations, but didn't want to miss this pop-up. read more

Fun learning experience to properly pour and drink tea Food pairings were with the bbq pork and custard pastries which were average. Enjoyed the stone and mango dried fruits. The salt and sweet paired well with the green tangerine tea. I do recommend the ceremony with a demonstration at least once to properly learn technique. We loved our experience at Steep! It was a beautiful day so highly recommend you sit outside and enjoy your tea/food. Parking is easy - structure is $5 and leads directly into the plaza where Steep is located. There's always street parking as well. We got cold brew jasmine green tea which comes in the iconic and very aesthetically pleasing Steep bottle. We also tried the special peachy oolong tea drink. Both were delicious! For lunch we got the chicken rice and the pork boon boon noodle. Both were INCREDIBLE. The kitchen at Steep is top notch and we were so impressed with our food. The chicken was extremely moist and the rice was perfectly cooked (not mushy) and flavored with chicken. The sauces were amazing - my favorites were the ginger scallion (classic hainan) and the spicy sauce. My sister really liked the soy based sauce. The noodles were also perfectly cooked and the spicy peanut sauce was so addicting. The dishes were beautiful and I'd be back for either in a heartbeat. Our food did take some time to come out but we were not in a rush! Service is friendly and accommodating. The plaza is beautiful - tons of plants and shaded areas to sit and enjoy great weather. We saw that this was a tea place and cocktail bar, so we were excited to visit after our experience at a tea cocktail bar in Taiwan! First, every staff member here seemed super friendly, warm, and helpful. Second, the drinks are definitely worth trying - make sure to come for by the Steep After Dark hours (I assume for the cocktail menu!) are currently Thurs-Sun from 4-10pm. Now for our orders! First, we tried the old fashioned with black tea whisky and oolong rum sour. My partner really enjoyed the old fashioned with black tea whisky ("It was good," which is, again, good! The taste of the black tea really does come through, along with a little fruitiness, and the old fashioned is definitely on the stronger side). He also enjoyed the oolong rum sour, though he thought the tea flavors came through more in the old fashioned. I prefer my drinks sweeter, and our bartender and server Huy was sweet enough to make me the River Delta when I requested extra sweetness! It was honestly amazing. I would definitely recommend trying this one if you like sweet drinks and interesting flavors (my partner really loved this one, too!). You can smell nutmeg first (freshly cracked!), but the coconut, lime, and mango flavors are a perfect complement to their oolong rum (they were thinking of an adapted pina colada). Seriously, go for this one. I wish I lived closer - it would be my perfect neighborhood bar. Meanwhile, it'll just give me a reason to come back to this area. :) Note: We also got to try out the Red Monkey makkeoli here, and we both really enjoyed it! My friend found this on Reddit because we were looking for tea houses in LA because the one I used to in ktown sadly closed during the pandemic. Very quaint place in Chinatown. They mentioned that its been open for 3 years. parking garage and street parking available. Staff is super friendly and walked us through the whole tea ceremony process with instructions. They have indoor and out door dinning. We chose indoors. We sat next to the tea kettle for hot water. Here are some quick instructions: 1. Rinse the tea cups with the hot water and discard the water from the tea cup. 2. Steep the tea 3. Use the timer and follow the increments on the paper provided. 4. When the timer beeps, pour hot tea from tea pot into the tea cups. 5.Cool and then drink. 6. Place tea pot down with the lid open to rest 7. Then repeat steps: 2-6 for the next steep I loved the chicken and rice and this orange sauce that came with it. Sauce had a kicked to it. I also love the bbq pastry and tea ice cream that came in a pint. I would love to come again for the steep after dark where they also use tea with alcohol. So a couple months ago, I happened to be back in downtown LA, and when I saw the blue line had now been extended with direct transit into Chinatown, I decided to see what interesting things were going on out that direction, cocktail-wise, that I'd been ignoring until then. Unfortunately for me, this is actually going to be a 2-part review, as I got there Sunday mid-afternoon, extremely excited to try their fancy tea-infused drinks, only to discover that they only sell them Wednesday through Saturday and only after 5 PM, information that is clearly posted on their website *now*, but unfortunately for me, wasn't at the time. So while I was there, I checked out their Sunday afternoon menu, and then came back later to try what I was really there for. Sunday afternoon, it is just a tea room, with a variety of hot teas I wasn't remotely in the mood for (a couple months ago, the weather was still solid pretending to be summer) - I did try their iced puer, which was pretty solid. A bit pricey at $8, but it was also a 500ml bottle, so I could definitely have had some and taken some home. I didn't, though - it was tasty and super-refreshing, I definitely drank it all right then. I also tried a marinated egg for $2.50 (not large, but definitely a tasty snack), and a $3.50 egg tart, which also felt a bit small for $3.50 - the egg was perfect, but the dough was just decent. Still haven't found anyone in Socal that makes egg tarts with that perfect buttery, flaky crust like you can find at a dozen different Chinese bakeries in SF. Verdict about the tea-shop: not bad, I'd definitely stop there if I were in the area and wanted a snack and tea refreshment, but I wouldn't go out of my way for it. Of course, a few weeks later, I *did* go out of my way to come back here, namely, after 5 PM on a Saturday, so I could try what I actually came for, the tea-infused spirits. Interestingly, apart from the menu, nothing else had changed about the place - it still very much *feels* like a chill tea-house, not a bar, which felt rather strange, but I definitely didn't mind it. I wouldn't come here with a large, loud group and expect a bar scene, though. It was much more conducive to quietly sipping a cocktail solo, which is, of course, what I was there to do, so it was great. I do think the name is particularly amusing, though, given that while it's clearly named for how you make tea, it is also a great description for their prices, with all their drinks being $16-17 each, and $35 to try their spirits neat. Of course, I *had* to try their spirits neat, and I can confirm, they are all wonderful. Interestingly, with the exception of the Oolong Toki, the others didn't really taste strongly of tea - the Roku gin infused with Chrysanthemum tea definitely got a lot more floral; the rum, bourbon and tequila just got smoother and with more concentrated flavors (they were all great, though - I was less of a fan of the Makers Mark, just because I'm less of a fan of Makers Mark itself, but I definitely want to come back and try their floral-infused martini, and a black tea rum tiki drink sometime.) The Oolong infused Toki definitely tasted the most like tea, though - and was probably the most fun of them as a result. (It's unlikely I'd spend $35 to taste them again, having done so once - but I would recommend it if it's your first time here, and you enjoy trying spirits neat. I would never have thought of infusing tea into spirits fancier than basic vodka, but it works! I might have to try tea-infusing a Scotch at home sometime now, not to mention possibly a black tea rum...) I did also love that they presented the flight paired with samples of the tea blends so you could smell what went into each of the infusions - I would've liked even more if it'd been paired with samples of the actual *tea*, but that clearly would be too much work, unfortunately. At that point, having tried all of them neat, I would totally have wanted to try all their cocktails right away, but at $16 each (and having just had a flight, both in cost and in ABV), I limited myself to one (I will have to come back though). Given the uniqueness of the spirits, and the additional aging required, $16 is *totally* reasonably priced, though. I actually ended up getting something not on the menu, which they were happy to make: a Negroni, but with the black tea rum. I'm confident the original Negroni or Boulevardier would also have been great, but I can confirm that the black tea rum Negroni I had was absolutely gorgeous. (And that they know what they're doing - bartender asked if I wanted the original equal-parts version or if he should skew the proportions to what he thought would work optimally for the rum; a great question! I told him to make it the way he'd drink it. It was wonderful.) They do also serve bar snacks when it's a bar, but I did not try any of them. They weren't as exciting looking as the drinks, though. read more

These drinks were pretty tasty! It was a nice twist to include tea as a part of their spirited drink. The service was fast, and it was nice to have heated outdoor seating in addition to the spacious interior. I had the drink with a small spoonful of boba. It reminded me of an alcoholic version of boba milk tea, and totally scratches that itch after a night of kbbq! The most aesthetic, cutest little tea shop in Chinatown, LA! This place is truly a gem and I wish I had discovered it sooner. A great place to sit down and chat or study. They have a good amount of seating both inside and outside with some outlets inside. I got their special tea ceremony combo which comes with your choice of a steeped tea and included 2 pastries and 1 serving of dried fruits. I chose the egg tart and bbq pork pastries. This was perfect for 2-4 people. You get to pick out your own tea cups which I thought was sooo cute. The wonderful server walked us through the steps on how to properly make and steep our tea. The service here is SO incredible, everyone is kind and so helpful!! I also tried: - Boon Boon noodles: yummy and very flavorful. A must if you love peanut/sesame sauce like dishes. - Chicken rice 2.0: came with moist, tender chicken thighs, jasmine rice and all the wonderful sauces that usually go with chicken rice dishes. I got the pandan drink (forgot what it's called) but I tasted the flavors of the pandan very well. It is creamy and refreshing and i recommend the drink. What a find!! Wish I had known about this place sooner so I could have tried their entrees. Will definitely be back to do this place justice. Parking was easy. There is both street parking and a parking structure for this plaza. Ambiance was very cafe/tea/bar-esque with modern minimalist vibes. Felt like I was in a hidden New York lounge. Service was excellent and the bartenders were insanely knowledgeable about the teas as well as the whiskeys/gin offerings. They provide a very unique and refreshing way of bringing the two together.
