Very nice multi use area, combining the industrial history and continued operation of the steel industry in the city plus mixed used retail and entertainment. It's very tastefully done and it is very convenient to the downtown area without being directly in downtown. I found everything I needed for a recent trip when I had forgotten to bring a few things and found it easily as well as some great restaurant choices for dining. I will come back. I don't know if you are allowed to do that to a traffic sign in use, but there are plenty of these throughout the shopping area. I don't really care, but this is a deliberate design choice as the rest of the area has rusted beams and supports, presumably in homage to steelworks. Came here in August. I tried to sell some dvd collections at the exchange but was not able to. Found a couple of face washes and 2 bags of on sale trail mix at Marshall's. My brother loved them and ate them all! :) I was here last year at Walmart and we were there late around 9 pm. It was an ok experience but that Walmart was more disorganized than others. I am reviewing Steelyard Commons as an out of town visitor. I dislike the set up of this shopping center as most of them are big box stores so in order to get to one from another, I would either drive or walk a mile to get there. It does have most of the franchises including Walmart, Marshall, Home Depot, Target, Petco and more. Plenty of parking seems like most people are driving here. Nothing too unique but I do like how some of the stores incorporate the "steelyard" theme in their deco. read more

This is the second time I've been to Steelyard Commons - both times we ended up here to go to Target. It's a large retail complex. There are a number of other stores and restaurants here. I was not impressed. Coupling with the nostalgia of a steelworks is a workable idea but compared with Pittsburgh's Waterfront this mall falls far short. As a Pittsburgher who grew up in Cleveland, I think Cleveland could do much better and has in other venues. This was disappointing. The other night, I was suffering from a very bad cold and sinus infection. Nonetheless, my fish tank was in super-bad need of being changed. In my NyQuil-induced haze, I started the two-hour process of giving my tank a good cleaning. Mid-way through the cleaning, I did something stupid; something I never would have done had I not been all fuzzy-headed. I put my hot tank heater into the small changing tank holding my fish. It was full of colder water and the hot heater instantly shattered. The fish were okay, but it was 8:15 PM and I had less then an hour to find them a new heater. Now, I live in Ohio City. Where the hell was I going to get a fish tank heater quickly at that time of night??? Never fear, I zipped to the Steelyard and had an excellent shatter-proof heater in less than 15 minutes. As I was really sick, I couldn't have made it much farther. I was home before 9 PM and had the water heating up nicely. And so, to all of you that find the Steelyard ugly, yearn for mom and pop stores in the steel mill area, or wish that the Steelyard was more hip like other cities, my fish and I would like to say, "Yeah, right." The Steelyard has come through for me on numerous occasions such as this. It's not there to be pretty and make you feel all nice inside. It's there to provide the mother load of everyday necessities to average folks struggling through their average daily lives. And, thank god for that! Call me a suburban soccer mom, but sometimes it's just nice to have a convenient place to do a bunch of shopping all in one spot. You don't have to worry about parking or about spending an exorbitant amount of money. This isn't Legacy Village, and for that I am glad. (Even though Legacy has its place--however small--in my heart.) The only time I feel like a shell of myself is when I realize that I'm running out of time doing errands on a Sunday, and then it's either drive to a completely different area for groceries, or go to Wal-Mart. That's a tough decision. When Wal-Mart wins, that's the only time I feel as though Steelyard Commons is a bit evil. Otherwise, I'm all for it. read more

There are plenty of stores and parking isn't a issue. A blonde haired caucasian security guard harassed us out of the parking lot when we met up with a man who was transporting our vehicle from Florida to Ohio. We obstructed no parking as we were in the "semi only truck zone". She said we couldn't conduct business there. Fair enough but we were also customers. We tried to explained we collecting our car and keys and heading into Walmart. She was hostile and in our face. I felt completely unsafe and racially targeted. She would get so close when aggressively speaking to us and got in our personal space. She was threatening to call the police and get us arrested or fined. She turned on her body camera when we had literally done nothing but try to explain why we were there. She didn't bother to try and hear us out. My partner is a trauma surgeon and I a nurse, we obviously aren't the type of people to cause issues. When we left we were then followed by her in her security vehicle until we turned onto the highway. If you see this woman, beware! read more

Those who criticize Steelyard for killing mom & pops, or as a corporate monster, etc., etc., are missing the point. Here's all you need to understand about why Steelyard Commons is a good thing for Cleveland: - It's a reasonable *RE-USE* of economically obsolete and polluted land. When one thinks of 'sustainable design', it is tempting to focus on things like green roofs and solar energy. People forget that *intelligent land use* is arguably the most important factor in sustainable planning. Taking fallow, polluted land and reusing it for a contemporary need is one of the most sustainable things a community can achieve. - People who live in the vicinity are going to shop at Target, Wal-Mart, Home Depot, etc., whether Steelyard is there or not. Now they don't have to drive/take the bus/take a taxi our of town to do so. - Whether you love or hate big boxes (I happen to hate them), they're here to stay, in one form or another. Thinking otherwise is kidding yourself. People vote with their dollars. Mitch Schneider, who developed Steelyard, is a Cleveland-based developer with a good head on his shoulders. In the real estate world, many more conservative investors think Mitch was crazy for taking a risk (with his own money) like Steelyard. Those of us who lean a bit more to the left applaud him for having the vision, patience and balls to pull of a development like this. First Interstate simply met the market--met people's needs--by developing this center. There's nothing evil about that. read more

Okay... We had to go to this horrible store today because sometimes you HAVE to go to Walmart. We went in the morning (an absolute must) and it didn't look too bad. One employee in the frozen department even gave us a salutation and the lady at the checkout was very friendly. I still hate this Walmart, but the employees were spot on and nice. read more

I've never physically assaulted anyone (yet), but this place as a whole makes me want to punch people. everyone. babies. the elderly. People walk in front of your car while you're driving. For some reason, people have a lot of problems driving/parking here. Generally speaking, the stores and restaurants at Steelyard are frustratingly slow. The folks at Steelyard (patrons and employees) have a lot in common with the honey badger: they don't give a shit. Once in a while, Steelyard will be the closest to wherever I am, and to save time I go there. side note: The Wal-Mart here is the one of the worst places I've ever been, and that includes many stanky port-a-pottys at the Muni lot when tailgating. read more

I happen to be someone who doesn't think that a healthy skepticism towards large chains is a yuppie thing. Consumers are consumers, regardless of class, and I think that valuing locally produced products sold at stores that care about workers rights and fair pay is in fact a shared community value. I do not think that Tremont deserves to have a huge, eyesore shopping center any more than I think that the children who live in this neighborhood deserve the ill health effects of the Mittal steelmill. But even if we set aside the philosophical reasons that I'm not really particularly fond of the Steelyard Commons, I could list several practical reasons. Sure, I like saving money, but I'm tired of crappy customer service, tired of salespeople who have no idea what they're talking about, tired of receiving sales pitches for unnecessary pricey product insurance, tired of stores that collect my information and then sell it (or leave my private information unprotected and susceptible to the identity-thieving hackers), and I'm tired of shopping at anonymous places where the bottom line appears to trump quality. Clevelanders have a lot of pride, and a lot of that comes from the things here that make the city unique (take your pick: the Lakefront, Sokolowski's, Stadium Mustard, the West Side Market). Steelyard Commons doesn't do anything to further that cause. I'll probably still shop here at least occasionally, since it's close-by (hence 2 stars, not just 1), but I'll do it reluctantly. I have the luxury of a car and of being single (and therefore more flexible with my income), but I think that even those without those benefits in life have a right to demand better than the Steelyard Commons. read more

Steelyard is the Best thing that has happened to Cleveland in a long time. I do not care what the crying liberal yuppie people think. What if Steelyard did not exist? Hum.... Thats right an Old J&L Steel Building abandoned and falling down, would still be there. And, Oh yes that abandoned Steel Mill employed NO ONE! Steelyard employs close to 1,800 people. I will support and shop there first. I have shopped: Home Depot, Best Buy, Kay Jewelers, Old Navy, Marshall's, Famous Footwear, Payless, IHOP, Applebees, Walmart, Target, Radio-shack, Deals, Buybacks, K&G, Petco, BK, and others (every restaurant). Horrible!!!! I had a return and Jessica at the front desk felt the need to tell for her co-worker right in my face. Then I was looking for a certain model carpet cleaner that they only had the display so I went in the back to ask if they had the item in stock. 6 associates walked past without asking what I needed. I hit a button to ask for a associate after standing back there for another 15 minutes and 3 more associates walking past I just decided to take my business elsewhere. This place is really weird to me. It has stores I like (Marshall's, Old Navy, Target, etc.) and yet I still don't like having to go here. I think it's mostly the location. It's just such a hard place to get to for me, I would almost drive to a farther location of a store than try to weave my way into the Steelyard. The parking lot is also just a total free-for-all. People are walking down the middle of the street, crossing wherever they want. Cars are driving through parking spots, peeling out and almost hitting each other. Maybe if the Steelyard implemented more thorough and stick pedestrian rules and regulations I would like it more. read more

Only reason Im giving this place 2 stars is thats its super close to the crib. Half the stores have staff that could not care and the other half are pretty good. The best time to go is early. All the hoodrats for some reason dont go shopping (with kids) till after 8pm. I generally hate grouping of stores like this..if I want one thing I have to fight traffic for all the other stores..makes no sence. None of the stores in this place really stand out to me as anything special. Your typical big box stores for the most part. I don't make any special trips down there unless I have to. I am glad it seems to be thriving though, as we have enough empty spaces littered throughout Northeast Ohio. It would be nice if they opened a gas station near the highway exit? I couldn't agree more with Jason. I visited Steelyard Commons for the very first time last night. We had dinner at the Steak N Shake and then walked around the center, stopping at Wal-Mart to buy some cat food and kitty litter. The employees I encountered at every place we stopped were friendly and helpful. I know it's fashionable to diss the big box stores, but the reality is that they are here to stay. There will always be small, local stores. They are not mutually exclusive. Businesses have come and gone long before there were big box stores. As for this particular shopping center, I will probably not go back, as I can find the same stores closer to my home. But overall, I think it's a good use of the space and is probably a godsend for people who live nearby and had very limited shopping opportunities before it opened. read more

I realize this store has two separate Yelp ratings, one for Shopping Center, and one under Mobile Phones (crafty move Walmart PR department). If you can't already tell, nearly all the negative comments are listed under the Mobile Phone category, while some made up positive reviews are in the Shopping Center rating. Rest assured, I am here to rectify this. The Steelyard Walmart is easily one of the worst places a human can shop. Unless that human prefers long check out lines, difficult employees, and has no faith in humanity whatsoever. Then this store is just fine. All it takes is one or two trips to this store to learn how terrible of a place it really is. Living in Tremont I make trips as far as the Lakewood Giant Eagle to try and avoid buying items at Walmart. But just like that annoying high school friend you never get along with, after a while you forget why you hated them in the first place and call them up. Immediately after seeing them you quickly remember why you hated them in the first place and instantly regret your decision. This is the exact same feeling I get the moment I step into this store. Employees are rarely around to help answer questions, and those that are typically can be found in a huddle with other employees in some obscure aisle in the back. I have yet to see the mythical unicorn (also known in this store as "management") but I have to believe they exist somewhere. Cashiers are slow, limited to a select few aisles, and seem to take more breaks than John Goodman running a marathon. If you ever caught in the unfortunate situation of waiting to check out, be warned that this typically takes 30 to 45 minutes, regardless of the time or day (I did test this theory by attempting to buy a pizza at 3 am over a weekend. My wait time was 34 minutes). If anyone is considering shopping at this Walmart, do yourselves a favor and go to the Target across the street. Prices are comparable, the lines are shorter, and the store is cleaner. read more

Starbucks in Target is terrible!!!!! They don't know how to make any of the drinks correctly always low on supplies or out like caramel or vanilla or the stoppers or even cups. i love the steelyard stores,i am in a few on a daily,DEALS is great for a quick item needed and other stores get me things i need at any time,the good thing is you can find it anytime day or night,i work till 3:am and on my way home often look to shop while others sleep and walmart is open and sometimes even want a bite to eat and the steelyard provides this for me on my time,i just wish they would put the playground in they developed to look like the steelmill they once had in the blue prints i saw when the development first started,i would like to take the grandkids to play keep building up the steelyard commons ,i think its great and i am not afraid to go shop anytime of the day,its nice that the security is on the job to watch out for wrong doings read more

I am in town from NY and googled Target. Steelyard came up as the closest to Downtown. I went to both Target and Wal-Mart there. The service in both was outstanding, and the selection of merchandise was great. What a great center to have in the city. I would like to see more retail downtown within walking distance of the Convention Center, Marriott and Westin, but since I had a car, Steelyard was great. I read more about it and learned that it is a reuse of the old LTV steel plant. Bravo to the developer for this. read more
