This was my first time trying Steak 'n Shake, and honestly, I'm glad I finally stopped in. With how crowded the fast-food scene is, I wasn't sure what to expect--but they seriously impressed me. The inside has a clean, vintage diner vibe that immediately makes you want to order a milkshake. Everything felt fresh and well-kept. The fries were the first thing that surprised me--they were super crisp, hot, and you can definitely taste the difference from being fried in beef tallow. They were incredible. The burger was just as good: fresh, flavorful, and even though I usually don't like pickles, they didn't bother me one bit because everything worked so well together. The biggest shock? I didn't walk out feeling that heavy, sluggish "fast-food crash." You can tell they're using fresher, higher-quality ingredients, and it makes a huge difference. I grew up on Steak 'n' Shake in Missouri. I love their Frisco Melts, Fries, and Chili. It's been a while since i visited this location in San Antonio, so i recently went to feed that hometown craving I had. I was disappointed all around. I ordered online, so I could pick it up and get home quickly. I had a short wait because it wasn't ready. It wasn't a long wait so nothing to fuss about. I ordered a Frisco Melt, fries, and a small cup of chili. And i ordered a drink. Once to my car I realized I didn't get the drink. So I go back in and had to wait to get a cup to fill it at the self serve area. Back in my car I leave the parking lot and reach my hand in for a fry. Ack!!! No fries!!! So back I go. Again I go in to show I had my melt, chili, but no fries. The cook argued that I must have not noticed that I ordered the chili as my side, not fries. Well the beauty of ordering online is that I have my order in email. Once I showed him my order, along with the girl who had been the server, they made me wait while they made the fries. I know the cook was complaining in the back. In no way was I ever anything but pleasant. In fact I apologized for the multiple times I came in to bother them. And that's what I felt like to them. A bother, even when it was their fault. Also, I have now learned that I don't like beef tallowed fried fries. I don't eat fast food burgers often, and I should have passed this time as well. I was helping my daughter with 2 dogs she rescued from getting run over. In helping with the large boys, I worked up an appetite. I don't know this area of San Antonio, so I was not sure on where to eat. She said she had eaten at this place before and thought I would like it. It seems like this place is kind of hidden, but she knew where we were going. On getting to it, parking is not an issue even with the large crowds gathered here and the other nearby restaurants. Going in, we were met by several ordering kiosks and menus are displayed overhead behind the counter. She ordered immediately, and I caught on rather quickly:-) We paid for the order and went and grabbed a seat. Our orders were ready fast, and they called our name to pick up. We grabbed our drinks on the way back to the table and were set to eat. I guess we were really hungry because we wolfed our food down fast. Both of our orders were prepared 100% correctly. I had always wanted to try the Steak 'n Shake and I did recently! Now, I will warn you, the burgers are not the biggest you've ever had, it reminded of the size of in n out and Wendy's. Now that doesn't diminish the flavor that's put out at all, so don't be fooled. Everything was freshly made on the grill that is really visible and not disappointing. Also, the staff was mostly led by some teenagers but that's fine they had good service and couldn't complain. The biggest thing that won me over, was the shakes! A-okay! We went the day after Christmas and the restaurant was pretty packed for dinner. I felt bad because it was clear that they were understaffed. Only 4 people were working including the manager who was at the grill making 10 burgers at once. The restaurant is small but nice inside. The booths are very comfortable and I imagine that this would be a nice place for families to eat together. As soon as we got to the counter we were told that their fry machine wasn't working. Really I wanted to try the burger and the milkshake so I was okay with it. I had signed up for their e-club and received a coupon for a free original double cheese steakburger for joining AND for my birthday this month. My boyfriend and I wanted to take advantage of our coupons and the manager redeemed them right away for us. I also ordered the nutella milkshake and my boyfriend had a dos xx on draft. They give you a pager and then it buzzes when your food is ready. They had forgotten to get us our drinks, but we just reminded them and they apologized for the wait. The floor near the soda dispenser was wet and needed to be mopped up but with only 4 people working I don't think it was a priority. Our food took about 15 minutes to arrive. To our surprise our burgers were served with fries, so perhaps they got their fry machine to work again while we were waiting. Unfortunately the fries were super salty, but the burgers were good! The milkshake had chunks of ice in it, so it wasn't as smooth as I would like, but I liked the flavor. When I heard San Antonio had a new Steak n Shake I was excited. So I placed my order online and went to pick it up. Takes4 minutes to get there. I walk in the the restaurant to the cash registers. I'm waiting four about three to five minutes then I yell hello. Some young man looks around the corner and says, "hold on". So I hold on. He comes out and I give him my name and tell him I'm picking up my order. He points to a pick on the counter and tells me, "there you go". So there I go to the other end of the restaurant and grab it myself. Then I get home and it's obvious this food has ben sitting more than a few minutes. This food was completely disappointing. Just look at the pictures. It was cold to the touch. The plastics container the cheese fries were in had good crust around the cover as if it was sitting for several hours. The fries were cold and soggy like day old fries would be.The burger was cold and the bun had burger grease saturated in it as if it had been sitting for a while. Complete garbage!! The food was decent. My daughter's meal was not ready until the rest of my family was almost completely done with their food. The entire restaurant was dirty. Not like.. busy after a rush dirty, but the chairs, booths, floors, high chairs, trash cans, bathrooms... all grimy and gross. You can tell they don't "deep" clean a thing. It's not the traditional diner style Steak n Shake you see nationwide but a place your order at the counter and grab your drink and pick your seat. The menu is more limited than the traditional Steak n Shake. The staff seemed pleasant and on their feet cleaning tables. Now the food, I ordered the bacon lovers cheeseburger, came out really greasy and the steak burger was soaked in grease so a loss of a couple stars there. The next Star was loss due to the effect from eating such a greasy burger itself, let's put it this way, it'll run through you. I put this in my GPS through Yelp to go have a great steak burger as I've always been used to having at steak 'n Shake. I walked in and there was no one at the counter except the cooks at the grill. I asked if I was eating in should I sit down. I had forgotten the process. They pointed towards the tables and said someone would come to me. I watched as a customer was looking for someone to talk to you at the counter about something and then brought up one of the people he was wet to bring up their food and a another person had shown up at the counter and looked at the food. I glanced over at the food at their table where the others were sitting as well and noticed the burgers did not look very inviting. After about 10 minutes no one came out on the floor and no one else was at the counter except for the person dealing with a customer issue. I walked up to the counter and asked again what I needed to do. The grill guy said that someone would come up shortly and I said do you mean I need to order at the counter and he said yes I'm just a grill person. Been to Steak n Shake locations across the country and always had consistent experience before this. First Steak n Shake I've been to where you both order and pick up at the counter. Limited seating. Super slow for food to come out (30 minutes for 2 burgers and a shake). Pneumatic door actuator is broken so door slams constantly and loudly. Employees are lukewarm at best with customer service. Location is still using styrofoam cups and plastic straws. Music is too loud. Empty ketchup at table. Mustard and ketchup bottles at all tables have dried up ketchup or mustard on outside. Prime burger and fries were utterly tasteless except for the pickles. Strawberry shake not blended well and also tasteless. Cherry vanilla regular coke from machine tasted like diet. I will be in the area a lot the next 2-3 years but will not be returning to this location. Very disappointed. read more

Came in with the fam. There were 9 of us. We all ordered different meals. They did not make a single mi-steak (get it?) The food was hot and the cheese was fabulous. The only thing I was unsure about was the fact that they had changed their fries. They were good but I liked the old kind better. Also got shakes, of course, and they were yummy!!!
