Walked in and had two waitresses arguing over us being put in their section, now sitting and waiting for someone to take our order, been 20 minutes so far. The two waitresses looked at us, but none came and took our order. No drinks, no nothing. People just sat down and getting their order taken. Not sure what going on, the nice person running the drive thru came and took our order as we were getting ready to leave. Ordered 2 number 1's with shakes. Now to see how this goes: burger was salty- figured out it was the pickles, both meat patties were smaller that a McDonald's burger (single patty). Fries were shoe string fries, not much to them. Ketchup on the table was watered down. Not real happy with meal but shake was really good. Won't be coming back. Don't recommend to anyone. Or at least go through the drive thru. read more

Stopped in for a burger and the family loves shoe string fries. Burgers were juicy and fries were hot. Threw some fry seasoning on the fries and everything was good. Service was quick but the waitress never came back after she took our order. Someone different brought us our food, a third person took our shake order and a fourth person checked us out. Stopped at the Steak 'n Shake while traveling up North for a classically nice sit down meal of their signature mouth-watering burger and fries and exceptionally cold milk shake. The seating area was quite clean. The customer service was exceptionally positive. The public restrooms do need to be updated with new fixtures. read more

Awful service... We are very VERY understanding, but after 45 minutes and counting 9 TABLES getting their food before us, we let the staff know twice we had gotten skipped on getting our food. I have NEVER left a restaurant before but we left after the manager said our food is coming out next and two more tables got their food before us. There's no excuse for that. We were already running late and now we have to go elsewhere to get food and rush out of town. Another customer said this happens all the time to them. So sad. read more

This place has a special place in my heart. Before my Dad passed away we stopped here every time we drove to KC from Dallas. It was always good food and the waitresses were always friendly and helpful. It makes me sad that others have had a bad experience when eating here. I can say we never had bad food or felt the service was lacking. It could be that the restaurant doesn't have the same people working there or it could be new management. Hopefully it will see the reviews and work harder to correct the problems. read more

Clearly management is aware that there is a problem as a secondary lock had been placed. However there is a very large gap that you can see clearly through that is in direct line of sight for the door to the restroom. I have been stopping here for over 15 years on my way to and from my mom's house. The food is always good. The milkshakes are the bomb. I've been there when it was packed and when it was slow. Sure, I've had to wait a bit, but if you want that burger and shake, you'll wait. The staff has always been friendly even though they are usually short on people. I read other reviews for this place and wasn't too thrilled about it when my coworkers chose to go here but after taking a bite of my burger, I was pleasantly surprised. I ordered the portabello mushroom and grilled onion steakburger with fries. The bun is semi sweet and it almost tastes like a Hawaiian sweet bun. The grilled onions were sweetly caramelized and the mushrooms were good. The fries were thin cut and crispy, which works for me since I like thin cut fries. They have an exclusive Steak & Shake pepper sauce on the table which I wasn't sure what to put it on so I dabbed some in my burger and over my fries. It gave the fries a good kick which I love since I enjoy spicy food. Marketing efforts in all of their menus and promotional pictures made the burgers look really big when in reality its not too big at all. I was able to easily finish a double steakburger with room for fries. I also ordered the kid's size M&Ms shake. The consistency wasn't quite right, it was more liquidy than thick like how a shake should be. In addition, it had an odd taste to it that I can't put my finger around. I love this place and I have always had exceptional service. If you go at lunch the place is going to be busy! The burgers for the price just cannot be beat!!! If you go between 2:00pm and 5:00pm you can get a shake for half price. I was in the other day and after lunch I got a chocolate and peanut butter shake to go. This is a great place to go for lunch and a great place for a milk shake. I'll definitely be coming back again and again. I had the bacon cheeseburger. It was everything I expected and then I added A1 sauce to it and it become more. I also got the peanut butter cup milkshake and it was great. Everywhere I go I get Reece's ice cream and this place had the best milkshake for that. The fries were great with the fry and steak burger seasoning. My girlfriend had the veggie melt and asked for no onions, however it still came with onions. The ticket had no onions written on it. I'm not sure if the poor handwriting misconstrued the cook or if he just read over it. She said the cheese wasn't melted on it, however she did enjoy the mushrooms that came on it. Stopped here to eat on our way to OKC. We have eaten at several Steak n Shakes. Lots of empty seats. Waited 20 minutes to be seated. Bathrooms were nasty. Place was dirty. Had to get up to ask for Mayo and Ketchup as the bottles on the four tables around us were all empty. One of the workers that was clearing tables was only doing it as they needed a table. So she would move dishes to another table, then clean that one. For the whole time we were there, there were 8 tables empty, but covered in dishes. The food is always good here anytime i come here. The hostess tried to seat several other people before us until a gentleman mentioned we we're there before his party and once we got seated, we had to move because we couldn't have a highchair in that particular spot. It's Steak and Shake, a Midwest chain of better-than-average hamburgers. I LOVE the St. Louis locations, but we came into the one here in Joplin very tired after a 7 hour drive to pick up a couple shakes and a Steakburger, their version of the hamburger. We went inside to pick them up instead of the drive through, and while the burger came out promptly, we've been waiting on the shakes for 30 minutes. Don't take one example as a condemnation of the whole chain; I've been to several others around the Midwest and they've been fine, even great. The one in Joplin, however, is poorly-run and not a good place to go if you're in a hurry. read more

Water was spilled on our table as soon as we got in. We should have known to leave once that happened... After that we proceeded to wait for almost an hour for our food to come. All of our orders were wrong and the burgers were thinner than the cheese. The fries were cold. Our shakes were not mixed. There was still full ice cubes in all of them. I forgot that I didn't like this place. My daughter wanted to eat at Steak 'n Shake as most of them are good. I got the taco salad and the salad part looked fine, the dab of 'taco' meat on top looked like cat food. I could hardly eat it and finally just gave up because it made me nauseated. The waitress are rude and indifferent to ones questions. My husband asked if they had small shakes, as in small medium and large. She brought him a tiny child's size. My colleague ordered a burger, a side of fries and a side of onion rings. After his order arrived he asked for some ranch dressing. I could hear the order filler berating the waitress about not including this relying the original order. He also said the order was not something that required ranch so charge them for it. Two things-don't yell at the wait staff so that customers can hear. Totally unnecessary! Two-who makes the rule that only certain items get ranch. I personally do not eat ketchup, mustard or mayonnaise, and usually not ranch but it irritates me that someone is deciding for me whether I can get ranch. This place doesn't deserve any rating! Go to Fuzzy's Taco Shop to the left when entering the parking lot instead and enjoy a nutritious, competitively priced meal to get you down the road. I only tolerate current Steak and Shakes for nostalgic reasons. They used to be great! Now you have to beg like a dog for service for marginally good food and then fight for an itemized receipt if you pay with cash or credit card. I even her over heard them say "don't offer a receipt unless they ask for it."
