I legitimately think I got food poisoning at this location, I always eat a small breakfast in the mornings, I love steak & shake so I went there on my lunch break break, things only went downhill after lunch where I started feeling off. Regardless I tried to tough it out not thinking much about it, but during my last call I was uncontrollably throwing up in their front yard. I made it home but my body was very nauseous and I was shaking and throwing up every 10 minutes till there was no bile left in my stomach. I stopped by steak and shake on Clark lane today to get a bowl of chili (sounded good on a cold day). When I ordered they told me they were out of bowls but had cups, I asked how many cups to a bowl? I was told two, so I ordered two cups, when it was totaled they charged me for 2 cups. I am either just old school and thought since you were out of bowls, give me two cups for the price of the bowl Atttendat at the window told me they were instructed to charge that way. So, I said I would go across the street to Wendy's and get a bowl of chili there. I was just dissapointed the wanted to charge me for two cups when they are out of bowls. It seems to me that steak and shake has changed. Now, they seem to think they need to go down market and compete with McDonald's on price. So my meal of a specialty hamburger, fries and a Coke plus a specialty milkshake was less than $11. The hamburger was amazingly small. I liked the flavor of the milkshake although it lacked texture. The french fries could have been hotter but they were okay. There's ample parking at this location and the restaurant seemed clean enough. But the outside really looked like it had been ridden hard and put away wet and needed a trim. Maybe I'm being unfair, but I really expected a better experience from steak and shake than I would get at most other fast food restaurants. That really wasn't the case. Unlike other reviewers who had problems with service, I did not have that problem although they did seem somewhat understaffed. read more

Rae is an absolute Rockstar! I have never witnessed such a hard-working waitress. She single-handedly took orders for a very full restaurant & she has exceptional customer service skills. Plus, she is quick & efficient, somehow remembering so many orders while keeping up with refills & grabbing extra sauces, etc. Rae is just a few months away from having a baby, so kudos for that, too. One of the worst meals I've had here ever. Between the Obnoxious children that the waitresses would not get under control. The disgustingly cold french fries which you have given me an upset stomach for literally a full day. Maybe, it was the undercooked meat that I had on my simple hamburger. I will simply never step foot in this place again. The place is filthy. The floors feel like you're stepping on grease all of the time. The bathroom is wretched. Stopped here while on a road trip for a to go order. Received the worst customer service. I had to stop the person who was cleaning the tables to get someone so I can order since I was waiting for more than 5 minutes by the register, they finally got someone even though they had seen me standing there already. After I ordered what I wanted, I Went to the restroom to wash my hands and the stench of old urine hit my face as I opened the door to the facility. This place is disgusting. The food from Steak n Shake restaurant chains are really tasty and one of my favorites, it's this location that is the reason why it gets 3/5 stars. I go there at-least one a week or two for their Royal Steak Burger. Usually the order taker is grumpy/moody, I have to check my bag before I leave because there is usually a missing item. The burger wrapper is sometimes covered in grease, depending on how sloppy the cooks are. I would say 1/5 visits I get the food looking good, but here in Columbia, both locations are just horrible. read more

This was only my second time going to Steak 'n Shake (first time was in Ohio--awful as well), and I think my last time. This location is right by our home in CoMo (we just moved here), and we stopped in for a bite one night during the week. There were so many things wrong with this place... 1. Right when you walk in, you see 4-6 servers/busboys standing in the back corner, talking and/or doing nothing but try to ignore their tables. It's very unprofessional. I've worked in both the restaurant and fast-food industries and it's never acceptable to see that many people standing around with nothing to do. It was not very busy, maybe 5 tables had parties, but that's still no excuse. 2. Our waitress seemed very ditsy and forgot 3 times to bring the ticket back to the table, though she told us she would every time. She also rang up the receipt before we ordered shakes, even though we told her we wanted them at the beginning of the meal. 3. My boyfriend ordered chicken fingers and fries, no complaints there. I ordered the Portobello and Swiss burger with fries. The waitress did not seem to know what it was, even though it was right there on the menu. She brought me a plain old cheeseburger with fries. The worst part was that I ate all my fries before realizing I got the wrong burger! So I had to wait for her to come back over to the table (she was standing in the corner talking to another server and didn't see me staring at her across the room). When I explained to her that I received a plain cheeseburger instead of a Portobello and Swiss, she again had no clue what I was talking about and looked at me like I had ten heads. I physically had to lift the bun and meat off the burger to show her that it was missing mushrooms and the correct type of cheese. She said she'd bring it back and "have them fix it" for me. Meanwhile, I did't even have fries to occupy me and I was a little annoyed. She came back two minutes later with the EXACT SAME BURGER with a handful of hot mushrooms thrown under the bun (no onions, like the burger is supposed to have, and there was still one slice of plain old American cheese on it). The burger was cold by this point, but I didn't want to make a fuss so I choked it down. I'd like to point out the description of the burger I thought I was ordering: "A Double Steakburger with fresh Portobello mushrooms, seasoned on our fiery hot grill and topped with melted Swiss cheese, caramelized onions and garlic mayo." The burger I received (the second time around) had no Swiss, no onions, and no garlic mayo. I'm not even sure the mushrooms were Portobello! I was severely disappointed. 4. We had to actively call the waitress over when we were done so we could order our shakes (she was ignoring us again). Someone else delivered them so we didn't even have a ticket when we went up to pay. We then stood at the counter for 5+ minutes while someone who was supposed to be working the drive-thru window used the computer. She didn't look at us or even say "Someone will be right with you"... all she did was yell "I need someone up front!" and go back to her station. Our waitress watched us pay and leave and didn't even wave or say anything to us as we headed out, even though I made eye contact with her 3 times. Overall, the chicken fingers, fries, and shakes were decent, but the service and burger were just awful. We will definitely not be eating here again... McDonald's is so much better. read more

Restaurant is in disrepair and staff is very disorganized. Our food took a long time. When it arrived, my usual favorite Frisco Melt came plain without Frisco sauce. Showed server (when we could get her attention), and she said she'd bring some on the side. Quite a while later my wife had to walk up to the serving window and remind her. She forgot...meanwhile sandwich got cold. Also, ordered a steak dog to go. She forgot that too. 20 minutes later we're still waiting on the dog to take home. Busy night, and not sure why. This place looks like a food safety time bomb waiting to happen. Wish I could post the photos of the fixtures with laminate peeling off and damaged. I really like this location. The first time I came here was the very first time I ever tried Steak n' Shake. I ordered the sliders, which quickly became the only thing I wanted to order. I really like how they season the burgers however you want and they are on the five dollar and under menu. The shakes are a little pricey but they are really good. I haven't had any trouble being seated, but I have had my order messed up on a busy day. The wait can get long when there are a lot of people, but I've never had to wait more than 15 minutes. Checking out is fast, however. The atmosphere is nice, it's nicely decorated, but the layout allows you to see the waitresses very easily. Most of them can be seen standing and chatting with each other. I feel like most of the time, half of them are working really hard and the other half are giggling and telling jokes. The noise levels can get pretty high because there are a lot of kids that come to eat here. read more

After seating myself, waiting for 5 minutes, then walking to the bar, I waited another 5 minutes to place my order. There was only one waitress on staff and she was obviously new. I placed my order for sitting at the bar, they brought me a to-go bag, no napkins, and 1 straw to share between my shake and drink. The manager and staff at Steak'n Shake on Clark lane, Columbia MO, were very rude and disrespectful to me last night when I went to pick up an Uber Eat order. I received the Uber Eat request at 10:06 pm and got there within 5 min. As I stepped inside the restaurant to get the order (as directed by Uber app), I heard someone yell "we are closed". It is not unusual to pick up Uber Eat orders after closing time from several restaurants. I tried to approach the two ladies behind the counter to show them the order on my phone. One of them said, "We are closed". I said "okay, but I have an order to pick from here, is it ready?" She just stared at me. Immediately, the manager came out and I thought he was coming to check on the situation, so I focused my attention on him and asked him if such an order was ready. Instead, he yelled at me saying "We are closed!". I said "okay" and walked towards the exit. The manager followed me to shut the door while the ladies giggled out loud. I don't know what type of training you receive as employees there, but your behavior last night showed how unprofessional, unreasonable, and inconsiderate you are. Someone from the management got back to me after I emailed this issue on the companies website. He offered no apologies but tried to blame me for coming to the restaurant 40 minutes after closing hours. I am an Uber Eat driver, I only respond to requests when I get a notification from Uber. stopped in here for a quick breakfast after visiting friends in Columbia. my husband and I were both a little amazed by how good our breakfast was. I deconstructed a sausage sandwich (sausage and and egg with two pancakes) and everything was cooked perfectly. the service was also great.
