We were visiting the college this morning and wanted a quick place for lunch. We happened to walk by Pickleman's and decided to give it a try. It was not very crowded at 11 o'clock so we were able to order right away. I opted for the Italian Club and my husband had the turkey sub. Both sandwiches come with lettuce, tomatoes, onions, mayo, and dressing, and were also heated. They tasted great. There is plenty of seating if you want to eat there. They have about a down different sandwiches, as well as pizzas and salads. read more

Italian Beef was good but I would chose something else. My wife had the Italian sub, I would recommend that instead.

I liked Pickleman's Gourmet Cafe. I was really impressed with the people who work there - with their friendliness, flexibility, and pride in their sandwiches (at an eatery that looks like it mostly serves college students). As an ex-Chicagoan who has not had an Italian Beef in 20 years, I decided to try their version - it's basically thinly-sliced roast beef and some generically seasoned "au jus" with a few peppers on tope. It wasn't bad (I happen to like au jus), but it wasn't the Italian beef I know and love. So if I ever visit Columbia again, I will probably visit there and order a sandwich, but not the Italian beef. _______________________ Second visit, a day later. I went in and decided on a different sandwich. There were no other customers in the restaurant, and I stood for five minutes waiting to order. The people working there (mostly different from the day before) just stood in front of me without acknowledging my presence. I said, "If nobody will take my order, I'm going to leave." On a lively Thursday night/morning. I stopped into this local location of pickleman's located less than a fee blocks from a major university. It was packed with happy hu gry customers including myself. At first glance it seemed hectic but but the restaurant's team management was stellar given the time and task. At the beginiing for the food line (where orders are placed) My Pickleman's sandwich specialist was Dolton. Only 18 years and recently hired, he showed great composure while maneuvering the diversity of the crowd. With a smile on his face he efficiently took orders from the lively crowd including special order of running my sandwich through the toaster with spinach already on it. He is planning to become a pro skate boarder and and sandwich maker. Once through the toaster I moved along the food prep line where I didn't even have to tell the following sandwich maker my toppings because he already had the predetermined toppings memorized and asked if that is what was preferred. And at the end of the line the cashier and team lead Jay who was also recently hired (I know because the last time I came it was his first day) was making sure sandwiches were getting to their proper owners. Jay demonstrated extraordinary patience while helping different groups of tipsy college students worked yhtough payment arrangements and third party delivery drivers barked requests at him KUDOS JAY!!! Food was great and the manager was wonderful. The credit card system was down and he made sure to let customers know that they were only taking cash at the time while actively working to get the system back up. What's different about this Sammie shop - well it has a different variety of hot and cold sammies. Pick the one that suites your fancy and run with it. I would recommend putting peppers on any of them to spicy it up. The peppers are mouth quenching rather they give a punch to the bit. I would also say get it toasted - don't be boring with a cold one (all though I am sure it is good). Right on the main road downtown - good service. Be prepared to find a parking spot and walk. Had a van full of road-weary travelers looking for something more than fast-food or Subway. Decided to stop here. Very disorganized ordering system (my friend ordered an Italian and the girl never even sent it through the oven) and even more disorganization as the subs come out. I had to explain 3 times to the guy what I got vs. what my friend got and he still didn't understand what was happening. Sandwich was ok ( I had Italian beef) but my pickle (which I had to pay separately for...who doesn't include a pickle spear with a deli sandwich?) wasn't fresh. It was soggy, had no crisp, and cost me an additional $1.80 for a whole pickle, most of which I threw away after tasting it. I'll be back in Columbia for work in 2 weeks, but I won't be going back here. read more

So very sad, to leave such a review. This visit sucked! We ordered for pick up, ordered around 10am for 11:45 pick up. Guy went to pick up, food wasn't ready or started. You would have thought they would have started it at that point, nope- not until 30-45 minutes later after asking did they start the order. Finally got food 1 hour 30 minutes later. The worst part- the gal at the register was no help and rude, employees arguing amongst each other. Then a guy said, you could have just cancelled the order and got money back. I mean, really. I get places get busy- but 2 hours and you can't start an order, walk-ins first- yet, you didn't even start it once we got there? Sad day, normally a great spot and Great food! read more

Ordered online at 10:30am while at a training with a desired delivery time of 11:45. Showed as in the kitchen from 11:50-12:30. Out for delivery at 12:30 and I'm still waiting after 1 pm. The location for delivery is probably a minute drive away. I understand staffing shortages are a problem but this is unacceptable. read more

Pickleman's is a chain, but their sandwiches are different than the typical cold cut and just really good. Some people I know wish the sandwich was a little larger, but once you get chips and a drink I think it's the perfect size. Pickleman's does hot sandwiches, pizzas, salads, soups, and cookies at a good location right on Broadway. They're also open until 2 a.m. seven days a week and they deliver to the downtown area, which is convenient. Their #5 Turkey Bacon Club ($5.49) comes out all hot and melty and has a really nice sweetness that I think comes from the honey turkey they use. You can choose from a white or wheat roll (wheat is great) and, according to their menu, the meat and cheeses are sliced fresh daily. Their Buffalo Chicken Pizza ($11.99 for a 12 inch thin crust) is also very tasty, but they use the buffalo sauce as the pizza sauce so it's a little on the hot side. I like the quality of Pickleman's products and their chip and bottled soda selection. My only gripe is how much paper they use on the sandwiches--they wrap them in two sheets and lay one down in your tray, which is eek for the environment-conscious but probably a minor detail for this review. read more

Only giving two stars because the #11 Italian was decent. Kind of a small sandwich and for the price point, it's really nothing to be excited about, though. I came in here as a first time customer and the whole ordering system was very confusing and not a single worker was very willing to help guide me through the process. More importantly, the pickle that I got with my sandwich was incredibly soggy. Could only take one bite before surrendering to the waste bin. I love all kinds of pickles but for an establishment with the word pickle in the name, they should do a better job at quality control. I would come back for the sandwich again, but sadly the customer service was way too sub-par for me to endure again. Therefore, I will not be retiring. read more

Very clean deli with young and polite staff. We tried a little bit of everything here. The veggie pizza was really good (thin crust) but big enough to stuff one person or nicely fill up two. We also tried the turkey bacon sandwich which was warm and toasty. All in all nothing to jump over the moon over but definitely a place I would return to and better than Subway! read more

They literally do not pay any fucking attention to any dietary restrictions. I have ordered from them about 6 times and ever single time I have gotten Mayo on my sandwich when i specifically specify in the customizations and the notes of the order. I am severely allergic to eggs and I have spent probably about $60 there and have never been able to eat my sandwhich. They suck. read more
