I accidentally ordered the wrong sandwich and it came out and obviously I was confused cause I didn't realize I hit the wrong button. She looked at the sandwich and my receipt and helped me figure out my mistake. She went and talked to her manager and gave me the correct sandwich I meant to order. She is absolutely sweet and amazing and is one of the best workers I've ever seen there. This is my last trip to Steak and Shake. We stayed at a nearby hotel and decided to go to steak and shake for a quick dinner. I have always been a fan of Steak and Shake, but haven't been to one in years. We decided to eat in at the Chillicothe OH location. First, no one to greet us or signs indicating whether to wait to be seated or seat yourself. Several kiosks to order, but we don't like cheese on our burgers and thought we had chosen plain burgers. Then the bill: this was a pricey burger/fries. Space on the kiosk to add a tip, but literally NO service. When I picked up my order, my burger had cheese on it. I had a hard time getting anyone's attention, although there was plenty of staff in the kitchen. Finally someone came by and she said I probably want the butter burger. I was given a burger with grilled onions. They tried to tell me the onions were just butter. (Am I in an alternate universe?) Not wanting to make a fuss I took the burger to the table and removed the onions. The burger was so greasy the bun literally fell apart in my hands and the grease was all over my hands; meat was extremely salty. Inedible. After getting more napkins, I decided to just eat the fries, only to discover they were cold. Thankfully I had ordered a shake, which was ok. The young man making 5 shakes moved very slowly. Nobody was manning the drive-thru. We did a drive by twice & decided to go in. I got really good service at the counter from Kevin W. along with the grill guy, Westley S. who both had great attitudes and were willing to listen to how I wanted the burger patties less smashed than their usual procedure and not cooked as well, so the patties would be juicy. I ordered a triple patty burger with grilled mushrooms, onions and double Swiss cheese and mayo. I asked if they would also butter the bun, which they did. And it was delicious! Terribly inconsistent food preparation and service. Guacamole Burgers have been served without the Guacamole, my Apple Pecan Chicken Salad has been served with out the Pecans, and wildly different amounts of chicken. Once I received almost an entire chicken breast (which was probably too much) and the next time I received four bite-sized pieces. Burgers have been served on stone cold buns, and sometimes they are terribly overcooked with zero remaining moisture. The staff doesn't handle questions well about whether the food should have been served the way that it was. Service - unfortunately I frequent this place often because of lunching with a group. There is one server that tries to seat us and take care of us, but if we get almost anyone else the service is substandard. We were served by a lady who probably suffers with emphysema and as she was serving our lunch she was hacking nasty chesty coughs all over our food. All five of us were grossed out since she made ZERO effort to put the tray down OR turn her head. I said something to the manager who checked me out and she said, "Oh, I'm sorry" and that was it. She followed me outside and offered a free milkshake which we NEVER purchase (and she would know this) so why would she offer it? If it were up to me, I would NEVER go back. read more

Definitely will not be coming back here. Luckily we were just traveling through. It all started when we walked in, only one gentleman was helpful and asked us if we wanted to be seated. We said "No we are here for takeout but, thank you!". It was all down hill from here. Took a solid 15 mins to take an order. We were the only ones on line waiting! The lady taking our order didn't seem to enthusiastic, but I guess that's what you'd expect from fast food restaurants. It took 20 minuets for us to get 2 orders of chicken strips and fries. We waited in the front and our food was finished in 10 minutes but sat for another ten minutes in the back. To make matters worse I paid before we got the food and tipped. BIG MISTAKE! Do not make my mistake. We were just tired and hungry from driving for 10 hours. The food was terrible, fries were cold and just thrown into the bag. Chicken fingers might as well have been frozen like Tyson and they were cold. Overall just terrible service and terrible food. This was my second time at steak and shake. 3rd times a charm? Let me preface this review with, I love steak and shake and have since I was a child. I worked there through high school (not at this location). My wife and I have given this store several trips, in hopes that it was just bad days. We have seen the staff doing drug deals on the clock, doing drugs in the bathrooms, and other shady behavior. In all my years of eating out I have never seen such disrespect. I went in we were seated by a friendly person. Then we wait and wait and no one greets us. Then a women from another table complains because her shakes have taken 40 minutes and she still didn't have them. Then the server went over and started making fun of her and mocking her to the other staff. Wow just wow. My family got up to leave and I told off the server and told her how disrespectful she was. Stopped here last night before heading to the hotel. Upon walking in the floors were overall disgusting. The men's bathroom looked as if it has never been cleaned, it was also out of paper towels. Every drink I was given had something floating in it or something on the inside of the cup. We ended up waiting 45 minutes for the most greasy bland food one has ever eaten. I have to agree that there is definitely inconsistency with the food. I do think all of the cooks know what goes on all of the food or else the servers are grabbing whatever is being put in the window. She passed our table multiple times and looked at us, but never stoped to ask if we needed anything. The table next to us had to wait a long time as well to even get their order taken. An elderly woman in front of us had to get up and walk over to the pop fountain to ask for a refill. Had to ask the manager to get us shakes and refills. Terrible customer service. Haven't been to a Steak 'n Shake in so long that I remembered it as a relatively new fast-food joint that really hadn't caught on. Boy, was I surprised at our late lunch at the Chillicothe OH Steak 'n Shake. 2 in the afternoon and the place was packed. Perhaps that had something to do with the deal that Steak 'n was offering: 4 menu choices for 4-bucks. Who knew? We just happened by and both of us mostly ordered the same: the single bacon-cheeseburger with all the toppings, fries, soup of the day and got the cookie that came along - all for four bucks. The burger was excellent with its bacon, lettuce, tomato, onion, dill pickle, and combo of mayo, ketchup & mustard on a nice, lightly toasted bun. The fries nicely salted and tasty - very thin cut and deliciously crispy. Hubby had chili with his. Think Hormel-type chili and you won't be disappointed. I went with the vegetable soup. It was great. Almost had a gumbo-like quality to it. But I'll warn you - the Steak 'n Shake soup is fires-of-hell-hot - not spicy - temperature. I burnt the b'Jessus out of my tongue on the first spoonful. No restaurant has ever served soup that's actually hot enough for me when it comes to the table. Stand back! Steak 'n Shake does. From now on out, it'll be Steak 'n Shake for us - deal or no deal. The regular menu prices are certainly reasonable enough. Especially when compared with other fast-fooderies you may usually opt for. Yeah it's a little crowded and It might take awhile to get your food, but I have been there many times and always have a great experience with my family. If your expecting gourmet then this is not the place for you.But if you like classic diner food with amazing milkshakes then this is perfect for you.I always get the burgers, In my opinion they are the best thing on the menu, and you have to save room for the shakes since they are a yummy must have! My kids love it, they love the hats they give them and the crayons, and they never had an issues scarfing down the food really fast, and my kids are very picky but they love this place! There's lots of hamburger chains but you come here for the delicious steak burgers, which are made to order how you want it. They have a nice selection of sides and hamburger alternatives but the whole reason to go here are the steak burgers. They also boast real milkshakes though personally I prefer the flavor and texture of fake milkshakes. The restaurant isn't fancy but it's nice and clean and we've always had good service. read more

I go here for breakfast several times a year. The food is always good, but the restaurant is filthy. Filthy to the point they need to close for a day and deep clean the place top to bottom. I went today and was seated in a booth that was covered with pepper. I didn't realize I was sitting in it until half way through my meal. I started looking at surrounding tables and they all looked to be dirty. There was only one other table occupied while I was there. There were three servers standing around chatting. Seems to me that management needs to be more involved in what goes on in this restaurant. The staff should be cleaning if they have nothing else to do but talk. Do not come here if you're looking for a good time. We ordered our food and after that, our waitress did not come back to check on us. We had to flag down the manager after an hour to order shakes. The table next to us didn't get to order for at least half an hour. An elderly woman across from us had to get up and get her own drink because she hadn't been checked on either. The rating is for the food.........Me and my husband stop there every Wednesday night or should I say Thursday morning around 12 a.m. and we have waited a half hour at the drive thru no one ever took our order we honked our horn forever so we pull around to the window no one was around so we honked our horn and still no one ever came for another 20 min. I strongly recommend that anyone who has experienced bad service or poor food in the past, give this steak and shake a SECOND CHANCE. I too stopped eating it, months ago, due to terrible service. But I took a leap and ate there three weeks ago and well... I've been eating is 3 nights a week after I get off work now. I use the drive thru (11pm) and there is always pleasant staff there, they are funny, communicate like REAL HUMANS and not like robots. The one young boy told me, honestly, that on a scale of 1-10 their cookies were a 7. I LOVE this. I work at Subway, and always try to be honest... even if it means I may not make a sale. I don't want to spend money, and get burnt/hard cookies... or soggy French fries. My Guacamole Steakburgers have been AMAZING every night (hooked), I also tried the chili cheese fries and they were very good as well. read more

I wish I had read some of these reviews before I stopped by here today. I was with my 88 year old mother who has trouble walking. We walked in right ahead of another party and we were waiting to be seated and basically were never approached or even acknowledged with a "be right with you" or anything for 10 minutes. During that time, a customer got up to pay at the counter and had to wait a few minutes. Another man entered and went to the counter and I told my mother that if the man who just entered was helped before us, we would leave.... and we did. This was about 2:00 in the afternoon. I understand they they might have been busy, but at least we could have been acknowledged and I would have suggested that they let me seat us ourselves while they finished what they were doing. But, the waitresses just looked at us as they s.l.o.w.l.y went about their business. I have eaten at several of these before and have enjoyed the food but no luck today. read more
