I'll admit, Steak 'n Shake isn't what it use to be, but they still offer a good burger & fries at an affordable price. I haven't been inside this restaurant in years, but I have frequented the drive-thru. My orders are usually fairly simple. I either get a single or double cheeseburger with fries and a diet soda. The diet soda balances out the skinny fries. My smash burgers are always prepared well and the fries have never disappointed me. The fries are always freshly hot with a crispy outside and just enough salt for seasoning flavor. My dogs even like the skinny fries. They sit next to me while I'm eating and I feed them single fries as I enjoy my burger. The staff over the intercom are easy to understand and once at the window, they are friendly and professional. I don't do fast food casual often, but I'd choose SnS over the clown or king. read more

Stopped in today because I love their food. Was slightly taken aback by the fact they no longer have servers. Customers now order at kiosks where register/counter seating used to be. Grab fountain beverages yourself, they call order number and you pick it up at counter. Table service no more here, sadly. They are using paper straws these days. I found it hard to draw the shake through the paper straw. Ended up pulling straw out of cup and getting shake that way. Food was good as always. Love their skinny fries. And the chocolate shake was great! The single bacon cheeseburger was as good as always. When done eating you throw away your trash on a bin and set the basket on top. This review is for the Alton Steak & Shake. Positives; they still make the best Frisco, and the S&S Frisco sauce is the best. Fries and the cheese sauce are always good. I always order online and pick it up at the drive through. Tonight and the last time I ordered from there, there has been missing items. Tonight, my wife had a Frisco and I had the single butter burger with grilled onions and fries. There were no grilled onions (kinda makes the burger). Ordered an extra cheese cup for my fries, didn't get it. The other issue was the wait. I waited a full half hour before finally getting my food. A couple cars in front of me left the line. No customers were inside when I went past. Staff were...confused for lack of a better description, and there were a lot of them. Lack of management with the night shift? What a disappointment. It's been probably 7 years. We pass by this location daily and always say we need to stop for lunch some day. Today was someday. I don't know if it's because I was there at 11 PM so they put the burgers in a steamer but they're not good. Ordered a double cheeseburger with lettuce and pickles and a garlic double cheeseburger and onions and an order of fries. I repeated my order 3 times and they still screwed it up. I just need to vent about my recent visit to Steak N Shake. We just ate our complete meal without any refills on drinks and I decided to ask for a drink to go because they didn't give us any during the meal. I asked for mine without ice because I didn't want the soda to be watered down because I was not going to drink it until the next day. When I got home I noticed the drink was only filled ¾ of the way. Are you serious, now Steak N Shake? Are you telling me that you are too cheap to fill my soda up? Give me strength!! How much cash are you losing by not filling my cup up? Actually you are losing money because I won't be back for a while because you have shown me that you are cheap and you don't really care about your customers. I went through steak and shake drive-through today. Wanted just a sandwich and they told me no. They said it only came as a combo. Apparently they haven't seen "Supersize Me". Food was good, service good. On Saturday, April 20th @ 1:PM I sat at the counter and watched the cook (definitely not a 'chef') handle food with his bare hands while all others were wearing sanitary gloves. When I asked my server at the counter if the cook was supposed to wear gloves, she stated yes; I pointed to the cook and the server sternly told him to put gloves on. With vengeful glare at my server he put gloves on. He kept gloves on all the time I was eating -- did NOT change them after touching himself (hair, clothing, etc.) and or cooking equipment. While observing him before he was instructed to put on gloves, he had to have 'man handled' at least 50 burgers, many buns and various pieces of cooking equipment with NO GLOVES. This person is NOT an asset to your corporation or the restaurant and had little to no RESPECT for Steak n Shake rules, in-store authority or general health of the customers at this store. This was a interesting experience today. The food was perfectly fine and service at my table was a Ok. Steak n Shake seems to be pretty consistent around the St. Louis area. The side show of the two employees at this particular location fighting out loud over table placement was very entertaining for some. The older crowd seemed a little put off by it. The service is always bad, they can't even elect simple requests like no lettuce on the burger. If you order your chili I hope you like it like warm or room temperature because that's the only way they serve it we sent one bowl back three times to get it even close to hot. One one trip there we asked for no lettuce on the burger the milkshake to be in a to go cup and to heat the chilie up twice. None of things were done. This Steak n Shake is a true Alton establishment. I have a lot of fond memories from coming here late at night and being served by the dead-eyed middle aged blonde waitress who seems not to be working there anymore. I think she probably hated us, but then again, she hated everyone. A lot of people like Steak n Shake fries, but I have to say I never did. They are too small, and it's awkward to eat them after you put ketchup or cheese on them unless you use a fork, which is less enjoyable. But everything else here is great. I never leave Steak n Shake without having a shake, usually one of the side by side shakes. Some of the seasonal shakes are good. The frisco melt and varieties of the chili mac tend to be my go-to entrees, as I look for more complex flavors than the standard steakburgers can provide (although those are usually good, too). I'm not gonna say that I always get great service here. Sometimes you do, sometimes you don't, and sometimes the food is better than others. But if it's after midnight and you're looking for a place in Alton that's open and you're liable to find someone you know to chat with, or else some good weirdos to look at, Steak n Shake is your place. There's really never a bad reason to go here. I've been with friends, with family, on dates, after a party, after the downtown bars. I've even gone by myself to sip coffee and read a copy of Hamlet. My tradition is to always get a gumball on the way out. read more

Usually I have no complaints, and even rave about the food and service. Sadly, tonight's visit was the exception to my visits. To start with, I ordered coffee, which is normally hot and fresh. I told the waiter I wanted creamer with my coffee. He brought the coffee, minus the coffee. When he returned, he had 1 creamer. Usually I drink multiple cups. However, this pot tasted old and weak. After finishing it, I asked for a refill, expecting the usual standards. It was just answer weak, and the waiter asked if I wanted more creamer. Of course, he returned with a single creamer. My wife ordered a cookies and cream milkshake. She said it tasted more like chocolate milk, with oreo cookies semi misled in. The burgers were fresh, as I expect, but they were sloppy and not to my expectations. If this was my first visit to this restaurant, I would be hard pressed to desire a return trip. Steak N Shake in Alton was always a late night favorite in high school. There was always this one mean waitress who was always there and seemed to hate every customer, but she had charm. I never liked Steak N Shake fries to be honest, but the frisco melt with a standard chocolate shake (no cherry) is an unbeatable combination. This is a beautiful Midwestern delicacy. The steakburgers are delicious, and having an opportunity to get something besides just french fries as a side is refreshing. My favorite is the baked beans. Sorry, this place dropped the ball yesterday. The place wasn't crowded or exceptionally busy. I ordered the all you can eat pancakes & coffee. The food was brought out promptly and it was hot and tasted great. The problem..the server never came back to see if I wanted more pancakes OR even to refill my coffee.
