I arrived with wide eyed optimism, as I have very fond memories of Steak and Ale from 20+ years ago. The meal was for sure hit and miss. For the hits, the Dynamite Shrimp appetizer was very good and the salad bar was nice & as I remembered. For the misses, there were a few. Servers were clearly overworked as they seemed to be understaffed. I was well into my appetizer before my beverage arrived. The entree itself arrived about 45 minutes after ordering and frankly was not memorable at all. The walleye had very little flavor, the vegetables were not cooked according to the menu and the prime rib, although flavorful, was cold. June 4 2026 went for the Thursday veterans 25% entire bill waitress got busy forgot to take off bill had to ask, then she didn't get our salads early enough then our food arrived, cod fish was almost to the point of being burnt but yet mushy inside. My husband has fond memories of going to Steak and Ale as a child. He found out that there was the last one in the country here in Minnesota so we decided to go to dinner here. We ordered prime rib and ribeye steaks. My children ordered burgers. Everything tasted great, the steaks were cooked according to our specifications and they were juicy and delicious. Came here for my birthday, my choice. Positives: salad bar and brocolli very good. Cucumber ginger ale mock tail very light and refreshing. Negative: Hawaiian chicken very dry, canned pineapple ring on top. Fresh pineapple and a sauce or glaze would have made a world of difference. Service was lacking, no ketchup with spouse's burger, no check in asking how the food is, no refills of water, no ice in water. The cucumber mocktail arrived very late. I almost thought they forgot about it. Thinking if I return, I might get prime rib. Not really recommend, unless you only get salad bar, but that is $15 with soup. read more

Ok, had to come see this iconic restaurant from my childhood. Location: within a hotel Off 35W in Burnsville. SUPER quiet. Like a library. Came in on a Sunday afternoon and sat in the bar. TONS of wine options ! Odd bread- some of you will love it; thought it was pumpernickel, dark brown, he said it was Bavarian Wheat; tastes like a dessert Tried an app and a main. Cheddar on the spinach dip is also unique- gave it a pizza vibe; the chips that come with it are like the ones ChiChi's used to have OK- the only tv on really low volume is now off and the stillness in here got even more weird. 1) turn on a tv 2) play some music I feel like I am at a wake. Only a few others here, so I understand the boredom in the Kitchen, but the reason we ordered an app and a main was so that we could eat the app and then the main. When you serve them both nearly together, one or both are going to get cold. Stop doing that, all y'all everywhere, don't serve them together, please !! I enjoyed the salad bar which set up extremely fresh varieties of items and comes with a side of soup! chicken rice soup was awesome. happy hour serves up selected items at a really good price. drink items are a bit basic and limited to three. Regular call drinks are $10.00- a bit spendy. Service was with a smile. However, no one wants to sit with a dirty plate in front of them for a long period of time while visiting after the meal. So we bussed our own plates and put them on the shelf behind us. Also the front walkway to the restaurant had about a foot of snow and wasn't shoveled. I am back in the Minneapolis area again and thought I would give it another try and order the Kensington Club this time...BIG MISTAKE!!!!! This visit was even more disappointing than my first visit. This is NOT the Steak & Ale like it used to be. First of all, it is in a hotel (a Wyndham), so pricing is way over the top. The bathroom was filthy with paper all over the place. The bartender was really nice, but she needed to take care of the empty signature salad bar at times because no one else was doing it. Last time I visited the original steak and ale was off the 494 W 1979- to me it was amazing. This stand alone huge building dedicated to an Authentic design Made the experience fun. The salad bar was a plenty and always filled with fresh ingredients. The Prime rib huge and super delicious. This steak and ale is in a hotel, the "feel" isn't the same. The salad bar was small and very "tired" ! a staff member glanced at it then and walked away- it was missing a few items. I didn't bother going back. The prime rib was good. Not sure i'll be back for the meal anytime soon. I DO ,however want to give Rachel a special shout out! Best bartender ever! Rachel made the experience a pleasant one ! Had a reservation for a table of 1 at S&A for Thursday, September 18 at 6pm and wanted a table, not a bar seat, but the hostess "convinced" me to take a hightop near the bar, was really hesitant to give up her four tops (no two tops), which on a busy night makes some sense. Was greeted within 3 minutes by a server who took my order (did not give me his name) and the bartender brought it out shortly thereafter..good pour and good martini. He then took my dinner order (didn't get his name) and was polite and professional. I ordered a bowl of the French Onion (FO) soup, Prince and Pauper with burgundy mushroom topper and a loaded baked potato. The busser dropped off my bread and it was delicious and warm. FO was flavorful but the cheese could have been browned a bit more. I did not like the bay leaf in the soup, it didn't belong and was never in the original S&A FO (full disclosure, I managed them in the 80's). The salad bar was not filled so it looked lousy and messy...I got the last of the salad but that and the toppings were very fresh and my salad was very good (blue cheese dressing). As I began my salad, I ordered a draft beer, which arrived quickly (frosted glass and cold...good!). This was immediately followed by the busser bringing my meal, including a separate dish of the burgundy mushrooms (lost in translation). So I had a full table of food and the bartender apologized for the dinner coming out that quickly. So by the time I ate my salad, my dinner had cooled a bit. Hawaiian chicken was more like a chicken with a pineapple on it, not too seasoned but good grill marks..could have been left on the grill an extra minute or two. The Kensington Club was a perfect medium rare but light on the flavor..tasted like a regular steak...good grill marks. Baked potato was large and very good. Due to the nature of the rushed meal, my stomach didn't have time to slow down and I was quickly full and got a to-go box for the leftovers. Was so rushed that I didn't order the Duckhorn Cabernet not the after dinner Irish Coffee. Being attached to a hotel certainly had its benefits for a restaurant, but does no good for the ambience of a high-end steakhouse, with diners dressed down in shorts and t-shirts, but that's not the restaurant's fault. Other notes: -the salad bar was quickly filled by one of the servers after I mentioned it to the bartender -the busser could have done a better job of pre-busing tables (I sat for awhile with the empty dinner and burgundy mushroom plates in front of me after putting the food in the to-go box while I finished my beer) but he worked hard at clearing tables. He would have been more efficient if he used a busser tub instead if a tray. -the person filling up the salad bar would be more efficient if he put the salad bar pitchers on a cart instead of going back and forth to the kitchen. -good music. So, my first visit to a S&A since the 80's was a bit of a downer and my Uber ride from downtown was crazy high, but I'm glad I went..but they have some kinks to work out. read more

It has been a long time since I've been in a Steak and Ale. While I understand that they have just opened they are doing an okay job. We were told that the wait would be about 25 minutes. After around 45 I went in and asked where we're on the list. They lost our name and number in the party. They apologized and said that we would be the next seating. My wife asked our server if she got the salad bar included in her meal. The server wasn't sure but checked the menu and saw that it was. She stopped by to let us know she was going to check on our food. We ordered the crab cakes as a stater and they were okay. They need some seasoning to make them just a little bit better. The bread that they offer is nice and warm when it comes out and the honey butter is really good. I ordered prime rib with grilled asparagus and it was pretty good. My wife had the fish and chips which she said was crispy and tasted fine. My daughter had a cheeseburger with fries and it was pretty big. She ended up taking some home. They are still working on their timing as there was big gaps between when things were brought out. The ambiance was typical restaurant. Not super long, but doesn't appear to be a lot of seating either. The music that was playing was jazzy and a little annoying but I am not a fan of jazz. My husband and I went to the new Steak & Ale for a charity soft opening (they officially open on Monday next week) and even as a soft opening/practice day it was fantastic! The service was spot on, the food was wonderful and the ambiance was warm and comfortable. Start with service. This was a practice day before the official opening and while those could be tough days the team was energetic and friendly, great teamwork amongst the team and it went really smoothly actually for a practice day! Honestly went pretty smoothly even if it was a regular day! Great service! The Food. The food was Fantastic! Great flavor, cooked well, and had a nice variety of choices looking at their regular menu. Today was a limited menu but even at that there were terrific choices! But let's start with the famous salad bar! My dad used to take us to the Steak & Ale in Roseville for special occasions and he LOVED salad bars so he was always in heaven! I didn't know if I remembered it fondly for the actual salad bar, or the associated memory, but I can say it was wonderful! Fresh produce, just the right number of topping choices, plenty of salad dressing choices (made in house) and crunchy toppings as well as some prepared salads (potato, macaroni, 3 bean etc). Very tasty!!! For entrees I had the meatloaf dinner and it came with mashed potatoes (tasty) and I chose the glazed baby carrots. The meatloaf had great flavor and texture to it. I love the edge pieces that have a little caramelization! The carrots could have used a little more glaze for glazed carrots but still tasty! My husband had the pork chop and a side of the mushrooms/onions. It was really fantastic! Great flavor, perfectly cooked (not dry!) and a really nice thick cut! They also serve a really nice fresh loaf of bread with honey butter for the table here and that is delicious Drinks: Great variety on their cocktail menu including some of the fun older options like French 45 and Bees Knees. I had the Blueberry Hibiscus Moscow Mule and it was DELICIOUS!!! I will be back for that lovely concoction at the end of a workday sometime soon! I also had the Espresso Martini which was fairly light tasting but in a good way! Not too syrupy which they can get to be sometimes...just cold and tasty! Dessert: We had the Brownie Bottom dessert and just....yummy!! SO good! Warm brownie topped with smooth vanilla ice cream and a super rich fudge! My husband would have licked the plate I think! It was a quiet Saturday around lunchtime and there were only a 2-3 other groups of people eating. The service was great! I ordered the fish with fries and it came with the salad bar. The salad bar was delicious and also had potato salad cucumber salad etc, the fish was good it had a nice light and crispy coating and the steak fries were good too. We returned to Steak and Ale, to celebrate a birthday, and we hadn't been there for awhile. We were welcomed promptly by great service, made sure we had comfortable seating, and our waitress was very attentive. There are many different options for seating, and we were glad our waitress was available to help us with the right table to meet our needs. The menu has many choices, including the salad bar as an option for many entrees. The bar menu is also very complete with interesting cocktails. The entire restaurant has a fine dining feel, quiet and upscale. I have traveled a lot, and have not seen a better looking inside venue for a classic place. The food? Many options, the appetizers which are available are various, we chose the onion rings - these are not to be missed. The batter is amazingly crunchy and the taste of these rings is awesome - I haven't seen better fried in a long time. I am thinking many might miss the appetizers since the salad bar is available, but don't miss these onion rings! I almost forgot the brown bread brought out as an appetizer as they prepare your entree - also very tasty. The entrees we selected arrived piping hot, we chose a cut of prime rib, and this looked like it was from a New York steak house. Extremely appealing with au jus available, although the meat was fork tender without it. My Monte Cristo was amazing, I have not had one in quite a while, and the crispy breading on this dish was outstanding! Even my fries were hot and crispy! This was certainly an outstanding dinner, and immensely enjoyed! We were too full for dessert, so we ordered a slice of their famous chocolate cake for dessert, and found frosting and tiny cups of additional toppings in our to-go bag. No wonder there were plenty of reservations available, as this place is two teps below a hotel restaurant and certainly not worthy of the Steak and Ale name. Waiter Jhon seemed confused and hurried the food was horrible. Steak bites and Wedge salad for me and the steak was cold and salty bits of grizzled meat served over greasy onion straws. Another guest had the same terrible steak bites and mashed potatoes they'd seemingly forgotten to microwave were hard and cold. The third in our party had pre-battered frozen fish and chips and a baked potato. The tastiest thing delivered to our table was the baked potato. Wow! Was so excited to eat at rebirth of the famous Steak and Ale my Dad talked about for years. Three at the table ordered Filet mignon. They were all cooked medium well and were tough, dry, and difficult to swallow. They were ordered medium rare! This is our first and last time. Loving this new addition to the restaurant scene in Burnsville, MN. Note: the restaurant definitely wants you to make a reservation. We did not have one the first time during lunch and had to wait 10-ish minutes despite the fact there were only 5 tables seated. It's new so maybe they're still working out the kinks and/or short staffed. Ambiance is warm and inviting. The restaurant itself is not that large but does offer a small patio section. We came here partly out of nostalgia for the old steak and ale, but this one sorely disappoints. My prime rib was probably the worst cut of meat I've had in a long time. Loaded with fat and gristle. To start it was Sunday evening,very little business and everyone was new. The bartender couldn't make my wife's ordered cocktail for some reason and the Mai Tai was undrinkable. The bread was warm but old, it was not honey wheat. The Honey butter had the consistancy of mayo. The french dip sandwich was okay. The au jus was over done with herbs, so it was bitter. I don't understand how you serve a 28 dollar sandwich with a 4oz plastic soufle cup with au jus. The Prime patty melt was chopped up meat grilled with onions and cheese. It was all placed in the center of the bread in a big ball. Flavor was okay. The waitress was doing the best she could, she said it was her first day alone. I'm sure the cook was more worried about cleaning up, so they could get out of there than cooking our food. Last thing, we were on the other side of the dinning room from the salad bar, but there was a table of four seated next to it. They brought out the cart to clean up the salad bar and the wheels were squeaking and they were throwing the utinsels in a container, very loud! I went to Steak and Ale for lunch with a friend, who chose it because it had a salad bar and offered a pork chop. We both loved the salad bar. I had fish and chips and she had the pork chop. Generous portions and the food was delicious, perfectly prepared. Our waitress was wonderful; attentive but not hovering, friendly, and talkative. She knew the menu backwards and forwards. We tried to go there on Mothers Day Dinner, checked website for to make reservations. There was no option for reservations or Mothers Day Specials. We went to the restaurant at 5:30 pm and it was closed by according to the hours it was open until 8 pm. (No sign or anything). We tried the next weekend the hostess asked if we made reservations, I told her there is no option on your website. She argued with me. Ate lunch at the Burnsville Steak and Ale on July 3rd. One of the BEST dining experiences I have had. Mik the wait person was amazing. She anticipated what we would need before we even could think of it. If you go here - ask for Mik, she is the best in the business. Also a big thank you to the manager who treated us like royalty. I'm not kidding and this is not a family member writing this review. They were both that great and the food was some of the best I have had. Loved the salad bar and bread - I went back in my mind to the 1980's... on a date and going here for a special occasions. Only think missing was a corsage and I would have been 20 again.
