It had the only eye doctor that did not give me a disrespectful hard time about refusing eye dilation. Dr. Vachon's exam and diagnosis, even with my cataract, was spot-on and I can now see things I've not seen in years. Eye dilations are for medical diagnosis only and not needed just to get an updated vision prescription. In fact, the only poor eye exam prescription outcomes I've had in my entire life - 4 of them in 2 states - were the result of eye dilations and the exams had to be redone every time, even when an ophthalmologist did them - at an average additional cost of $60! Penobscot's optician, Rebecca, also did an excellent job with their selection of frames and with fitting and finish work and my new glasses were ready in half the estimated time. I would highly recommend Penobscot Eye Care to anyone.

It was a simple transaction yet not at all a common one in this era, where nothing is made to last and the customer is frequently left to fend for him/herself. When I'm due for a new pair of eyewear (soon), I'll be back there because I value this connection and value the expertise of Mr. Pierson. As with everything, there's always a cheaper price and infinite selection to be found elsewhere. But due to this experience, in part, finding the absolute cheapest set of frames is way down my list of buying priorities. Now I want nothing more than to take my prescription in and let Mr. Pierson handle the rest - because his brand of professionalism is precisely what goes missing when national chains march in and undercut and put out of business local stores. I'm finally drawing the line in the sand - and I feel great about it.

DISCLAIMER: This review is for Gaetani's Bangor office, I've never had any issues with the Old Town…read moreoffice and for them I would rate 5 stars. The Bangor office doesn't have its own Yelp entry (that I could find) so I'm using the Old Town one for now (and I'm happy to move it over later if possible). Although the staff were polite and efficient, I have to leave an "ok" review because of what happened during my visit today. I'm a new patient at the Bangor office, so I was given some paperwork to fill out. One of the waivers I signed was for an eye scan that I assumed was just part of my normal eye exam/prescription. I don't recall anything on the waiver itself indicating that it was not covered under a normal visit/exam. None of the staff explained to me that the scan wasn't covered by insurance; but in the spirit of fairness, one of their waivers did mention patient responsibility for knowing about your own insurance coverage. That being said, I feel as if I was mislead by omission. It cost me 40 dollars out of pocket, and while it is perfectly legal to hold me accountable for my mistake... it was a mistake made honestly and innocently. I've had nothing but good experiences in their Old Town office... I vividly remember as a young child feeling nervous to get an eye exam, and I remember how the staff went out of their way to make me feel at ease. The reason I didn't double-check with the receptionist about my paperwork today was simple: I implicitly trusted Gaetani Eye Care to have my best interests at heart. 40 dollars might not seem like a lot to most people, but I'm currently navigating a difficult chapter in my life. 40 dollars is a lot to me. If I had been told ahead of time that the scan was not covered, I would certainly have declined it- or perhaps been forced to take my business elsewhere. I do not expect, or desire, a refund of any kind. The paperwork Gaetani gave me was legally binding and, in the grand scheme of life, perhaps this is an inexpensive lesson for me. As a sign of good faith, I would be more than happy to edit this review and leave a glowing 5 stars if I could receive an apology. Hopefully this will prevent someone else from making my mistake in the future, or even inspire some minor policy change. [please excuse any punctuation or formatting errors]

Apparently one of the screws holding my lenses in their frame decided to take a permanent side trip and this morning one lense popped out. I could find no relief in Bar Harbor and called Dr. Albert's office. They said come by and they would see what they could do. Although they appeared to be busy when I showed up they immediately knew who I was and said "Sit down and relax and we will take a look". I had only a few minutes to "relax" before they fixed my glasses but during that time I looked around. My impression was that this office was very well organised/run and the ladies that helped me were courteous and obviously competent. Also, there was a large display area for frames, etc. so that patients would have a big selection to choose from. To top if off they would not accept any payment. All of this tells me that this is five star Optometry practice. Glenn
