No way in hell this is "light" heavy cream. Quite literally filled half the cup. Forgot to snap a photo before I shook it.
    Justin C.

To preface, this is my go-to location before work and has been for a few years now. There's only one good barista here. They're the only reason this place isn't getting 1 star. Every morning they're not working, the drink is inconsistently made. Might as well been have churning butter with how much heavy cream they put in my cup this morning. I always use the app and place an order for pickup because it's the most convenient option for me and a lot of others. The order status on my phone *never* matches what the status of the actual drink is. I'm not sure how the process works, but I assume someone acknowledges the order which sends the "got it" status to my phone. Then same thing when someone starts making it and then when it's done. They're never busy when I arrive and there are about 4-5 baristas behind the counter. I have watched them get the order, make my drink, and put it out while the status in the app never changes. So if I'm sitting in my car waiting to get my drink as to not crowd the inside on the rare days it becomes crowded, I will never know the status of my drink is. One of my pet peeves is when people cannot do their jobs correctly. I'm in an engineering field so I see it a lot and am perpetually perturbed. To see a coffee shop being operated the way this one is, nearly every single morning, is beyond me. Can't be sure if it's the training they're receiving (or possibly not receiving) or the people themselves, but something absolutely has to change. Unfortunately I will still be frequenting this shop because it is far too convenient for me, but hopefully this review will be helpful for people who are trying to find a coffee shop to make their regular spot.

I come to this location often and I'm finally writing a review because I'm a little frustrated at my order being incorrect for the 6th time. I've come up with a drink order that should be mistake proof , 4 espresso shots in a grande cup with extra ice and a little cold foam on top.Just about everytime I've ordered this drink at this location my coffee always has soooo much cold foam that I'm damn near getting a sugar rush not a caffeine rush and I end up throwing my drink away because I don't even want to drink it. I just hope that the baristas get a little bit more training on making actual COFFEE drink orders not diabetes in a cup.

I don't think the protein is supposed to look like chunks of curdled milk.

Placed an order prior to closing. I ordered a sugar free protein vanilla latte, took the lid off and was disgusted by what I saw.

Not sure why this specific Starbucks can never mix the matcha correctly. Mouth fills of "grass" flavor bombs don't taste good..

This is a very efficient storefront. I don't mind walking in from the street. Not far from the Downtown Area, staff are friendly and this place is clean! Food and drink are made fresh and on time. My new go to spot during the workweek.

Wait outside on the sidewalk (no exterior seating) and someone will come to take you inside. Do not ring the door bell. The theme is to take it slow. Each customer typically waits 20-30 minutes to enter as part of how they do things, even if there is open seating inside. Not sure if they use a timer to space entries but it seems consistent. They take one group in at a time. Interior: A few tables around the wall and then bar seating. Would not recommend for parties greater than 2, there just isn't the space. They welcome service animals, babies/children and strollers from what I observed. The music was very, very loud. It was difficult to hold a conversation. I did not see a bathroom. Ordering process: After seating you wait for a little bit for them to bring small water cups and a QR menu with a table number and a set of rules. They do not have a physical menu, you must use your phone to order. Cell phone reception was dicey and took a long time to load. They have an interesting concept where you have a digital 'tab' open on their toast website. Unfortunately you must provide your full name, email and phone number. They have pour over drinks (note these can take 15-20 minutes), matcha, Hojicha and others. You may only order one drink per person at a time. They have a small snack menu with rotating foods. They use oat milk only. No substitutions allowed. After mobile ordering, drinks take 20-30 minutes as part of their take it slow vibe. Matcha $8 is from Paru tea and was very good. Hojicha $8 was too milky and didn't have a strong enough flavor. When you are done you walk to the register by the door and wait to be checked out. If they are making a drink you wait until they are finished. I wasn't really a fan. Staff were brusque. Music was too loud to converse.

The menu featured various matcha tea drinks which seems to be all the rage right now. The same seating arrangement of the bar countertop and tables across from it was available if you wanted to hang out and chill. A sign behind the bar described the ceremonial grade matcha that was used with the region of origin and the flavors imparted to the powder. Five different matcha drinks were offered along with hot and cold coffees and lattes. The top three matcha choices were priced at $8 each. I chose the Ordinary Pleasure which was the first one. Pandan sticky rice milk and mango puree were added to the matcha and topped with a salted coconut foam. I wasn't a fan of the foam, but the matcha flavor was intense and contrasted by the fruity puree on the bottom of the cup. The baristas were very focused with measuring the exact amounts for each ingredient in the drinks they were preparing. The matcha quality seemed to be very good based on what I tasted so maybe it's why the price was $1 higher than what I have tried elsewhere.

I honestly expected this drink to be very gimmicky and too sweet but was surprised when it seemed to strike the perfect balance. I could taste both the matcha AND the mango puree AND the salted coconut foam without one overpowering the other! What delicious witchcraft is this? The mango was subtle but there. The drink was creamy and thick. Such a refreshing summer drink! The cafe itself is super cute and quaint with a trendy, boho chic vibe. Baristas were super friendly. I would come back again!

Food: 5/5 Drinks: 4/5…read moreService: 5/5 Atmosphere: 5/5 I love the Dark Horse brand across the board, but the Golden Hill location has consistently been my favorite. The baristas are kind and efficient, and they remember my dogs which of course wins me over instantly. The location itself is super convenient: easily walkable, a fair amount of street parking, and easy access right off the highway. I also really appreciate that they have lots of outdoor seating and offer pup cups, so I feel comfortable stopping by with my dogs. I also love that they have a rewards program via Cash App/phone number/the credit card you use. It's especially convenient that this is all tracked digitally and automatically when you swipe your credit card. For drinks, I've ordered: The Champ (iced): 4/5 A very popular choice. I do enjoy this coffee and the honey flavor is lovely, but the cinnamon can be a bit strong for me. They use powdered cinnamon over the top, which from a texture standpoint isn't my favorite. I do find the cinnamon is less overpowering when this drink is ordered hot instead of iced. Salted Maple Latte (iced): 5/5 This is my go-to. Delicious, strong coffee without being bitter and very well balanced overall. The maple flavor doesn't jump out in an obvious way, but adds a subtle sweetness that isn't overly sweet or sharp. Interestingly, I think the 16oz is better balanced than the 12oz in terms of coffee/milk/maple ratios. Pumpkin Spiced Latte (hot): 3/5 I'm not the biggest pumpkin spice latte fan, so I wasn't expecting to love this. It does have a clear pumpkin spice flavor, but the texture coats the mouth a bit more than I prefer (likely from the pumpkin), which is part of why this isn't my favorite. For food, I've ordered: Vegan Donuts: 5/5 I thought these used to be made by a sister company of Dark Horse, but I believe they're now sourced from Nomad Donuts. They usually have 1-2 rotating flavors each day, and since the main difference is the glaze on top, you really can't go wrong with any flavor you get. The texture is closer to a cake donut. Super tasty and not too sweet. Almond Cake: 5/5 Delicious and decadent. Very light, sweet, and crumbly. This isn't something I'd get regularly since it's just a bit too sweet for me without feeling like dessert, but it's undeniably tasty. To summarize, this is a consistently solid location with great service, excellent drinks, and small bites that pair perfectly with your favorite cup of joe. This is my go-to neighborhood coffee stop.

Sadly the ice cream shop was closed when I came back around 2pm. I found that to be odd, or perhaps it was open~ it was dark and doors were closed. But anyways, thankfully, Dark Horse Coffee Roasters was still open till I believe 3:30pm! (I went on a Sunday). They have indoor seating and a big space outdoor for seating. We found parking on the street, no paying needed. They also have a bathroom, which is nice, but most people don't ask for the key (since it's essentially open, only locked when in use). The door is frosted and you can see the outline of someone as they stand near it. I think it could be a little more frosty! There were a lot of workers the day I went and they were nice. The prices were good for specialty lattes and the guy informed us that both sizes use the same amount of shots (2), the only difference is quantity of milk! I got a classic, $6, 12 oz Iced Salted Maple (S'Maple) Latte. It was good, but I wouldn't mind if the salted maple was more flavorful. It's quite subtle! The outdoor space is really great for meet ups with large groups of family/friends/work. I think this location is really lovely and would recommend people to come check it out!
