It's Starbucks. How do you accurately write a review about yet another Starbucks location...the McDonald's of the coffee world, but pricier. One thing I noticed while in CT was that Dunkin has the lock on the coffee game. I have never been a Dunkin man myself, so I was happy to find this Starbucks hanging out. I noticed a long pickup line outside, and found that it was actually faster to go in and order than to order ahead. This is true in many facets of life. A bird in the hand and all that. I digress.. The staff was friendly, the coffee was properly made, and the location was clean and orderly. Interesting sidenote..I am starting to think the cookies in the display case are fake. Patsies. A sham. As they do with the bakery counter, I went in for a coffee and saw a frosted Frosty cookie and thought, i need to eat that right now. The clerk replied "no snowman for you!" He told me they were all out, even though I protested vigorously that there were two in the case. Regardless, I left without a cookie. Life has a way of crushing your dreams, but it is all about how you respond that counts. At the end of the day, it is overpriced coffee, yoga pants, and Uggs. read more

A friend and I came in at about 6:30 on a Sunday night, intending to sit and enjoy our beverages. The employees started mopping soapy water around our feet, including leaving a wet, soapy floor between us and the cash register. When I asked if they could hold off on the mopping, they said they would be closing in an hour and needed to get their mopping finished so they didn't have to stay late. We left. I came to Old Saybrook for a beach rental and decided ahead of time that I'd get up at dawn every morning and get my writing done. I spent seven days in a row at this Starbucks and was blown away by the baristas and the community they create. By the end of the week they knew my name, what I was working on and what I was drinking. I'm an introvert so this doesn't tend to happen to me. Eventually it got to where they'd have my drink waiting for me at the counter when I stepped up. Specifically Alex and Dawn - they really made me feel like this was my local coffee shop for a week. Never do I go in here and have a speedy experience. There's always a line, the baristas are slow, and it reflects poorly on management. Baristas take breaks in middle of lines out the door, socialize over making drinks, etc. Starbucks is great to have in the area, but this one in particular needs a staffing restructure from the top down. read more

The manager Michael goes out of his way to keep the place nice and ensure that customers are satisfied. You can tell they really have a great team here. Wow!!! Some harsh reviews on this one! IMO, this is the best Starbucks in the area, Niantic being a close second, followed by Groton, and Madison being dead last. Sure, no one likes to wait in line, but heck, it's Starbucks! I've been to them all around the country, major airports, NYC, Boston, and there is always a line! Starbucks has been around long enough that you know what you are in for when you get there. You have certain exceptions that this store barely meets. its not a bad store by any means however its a very very small location and I drove past it 2x on main street trying to find parking. This is a great store with a wonderful staff. Both the managers and whoever who is charge of this location at the corporate level should be commended. It's a tight space geographically with limited parking, and people in this town can be very demanding, but the baristas are always friendly, fast, and a pleasure to talk to. They handle their jobs with professionalism and kindness to people (they remember your name if you're a regular, too). It's a hard job and they do it extremely well. I registered to write this here because I think it's important to signal to people higher up the ladder that the type of atmosphere at a store like this is hard to find, and they might not always know this from numbers on spreadsheets. Morning staff never fails to get my order right and out quickly. Evening and weekend staff however have been nothing but a nightmare. I always end up waiting 20 minutes for my order no matter how busy, even if I order ahead. Doesn't seem like the staff follows the time stamps on the orders. You constantly watch new customers come in, order and leave the store before you get your order. I've also had my order given to me incorrectly on multiple occasions, causing me to need to go back and ask them to remake it. I have been here three times this week. The parking is tough and no drive through at this location. The staff making the beverages have been consistently friendly. The staff taking the orders, not so much. One tall male with black hair and a black beard is more interested in joking around with employees than helping customers. He was actually gossiping on my first visit and I waited for him to finish before ordering with the girl he was talking to.
