Very, very understaffed. But I understand with everything that is going on with Starbucks right now. Whenever I order from there it's either very busy or only a few people there. The music isn't as loud as other places. Regarding their Matcha, it's my favorite place! I know, I'm probably going to be labelled as one of those "Crazy Starbucks People" (You know, like the ones who order and obsess over their drink.) That is NOT me. Went over today for a coffee while in Madison because I have always liked the service. Employees are clearly overworked and the store is understaffed but they still do their best to be friendly and helpful. However, today, the Starbucks on State is closed--the day when Miffin Street and Crazy Legs are going on. One of the busiest days in that area. No stars and negative stars were not an option but that is what they deserve! Disabled man hobbled up to the counter with a bunch of containers and bottles sitting there and three employees barely talking to each other. All three ignored the man and one walked away. He then hobbled over to were he was standing and told the kid he was here to pick up a freezer. The kid stood there looking stupid and had no clue about much of anything. The man then asked to use the restroom while he was waiting and the little moron tells the man he has to buy something first! He already established that he was there on business but "would you like fries with that" is all he could muster! So he left and the company had to call and make arrangements again because of ignorant parroting employees. read more

We were in line at the drive thru which was moving ridiculously slow and they took the order of the car in front of us and refused to take our order because it was 2:00 on the dot and they closed at 2:00! Visited the Starbucks on State Street after eating lunch at State Street Brats. I was in the holiday spirit so I ordered a peppermint mocha. While waiting for my coffee, I felt a rumble in my stomach. The rumble quickly became an inferno. I asked for the restroom code to the 1 toilet restroom. Was very relieved when it was unoccupied. Sat down on the John and just unloaded. Not gonna lie, it was pretty gnarly. Feeling relieved, I glanced at the toilet paper dispenser. Completely out!!. No worries, I'll just use the paper towels. But of course this restroom has blow driers for your hands. Checked my pockets for Kleenex, nothing. At this point, panic is setting in. What do I possibly do? Do I stick my ass in the sink and just run water over it? Not an option because I'm not that flexible in my old age. Do I take my underwear off and wipe my butt with them? Can't really do that either because I wouldn't have anywhere to put them after wiping, the trash can was tiny. Also, there a guy outside the door waiting for me to finish. I do the only thing left to do: waddle out to the napkin station and grab a few napkins. After that, I'm 3rd in line for the restroom. My wife asked why I was back in line and I told her I left my gloves in the restroom. After 10 minutes of waiting in line with a dirty butt, I finally cleaned my self up. I don't often review chain places since we all pretty much know what to expect/the standards, but was extremely disappointed with my experience here. I ordered a trenta refresher drink via mobile order to share with my SO with no ice, seeing as it's sub-10 degrees here in Wisconsin in the evenings. I never really thought about it, but I do understand that ice usually takes up space. I wish that the barista who made my drink watered down my drink or something if they didn't want to fill the drink to the brim, but my cup was hilariously not even close to filled up when I went in to grab it. Unfortunately, I'm not a confrontational person and just suffered in silence. I took it to my SO who looked at it and asked if I spilled some...negative. Again, I do understand that maybe there's less because ice takes up space, but I have ordered drinks in the past, especially in the cold winter months, with no ice and have not had something like this get served to me, especially since I'm paying such a high price for what I thought would be consistent service. It just seems really petty of the barista who made my order, and not much extra effort to add an extra couple of ounces so a cup at least looks filled is worth customer satisfaction I would hope. This is one of the worst customer experiences I've possibly ever been served. A new low of entitled behavior. The team literally speaks down to people especially if your ESP is off and does not know the secret rules of the shop. they won't even stop to look at you sometimes if you're at the counter. I am so over the attitude of the SB's employees. You are making $6-7 bespoke coffees. Make killer coffees then and drop the attitude. SB is a nice place to work, for what seems to be a supportive company, deliver in kind. There are plenty of Karen memes, but where are all the employee snowflake memes? Seems like I witness way more snowflakes behind the counter but have never witnessed a Karen event yet. read more

I was looking for some whole wheat bagels, and this was the only place near the bottom of state street that had them. I had just two of their Sprouted Grain Bagels for breakfast, and it was great. Only negative is that they don't have low fat cream cheese, so I had to get my own. They also make a good vanilla bean Frappuccino. read more

So I''ve only been in Madison for a short time, but I love coming to this Starbucks. I am not a huge fan of the coffee here, but the atmosphere is wonderful. The staff have always treated me well, and the first time I came here, one of the ladies working treated me as though we were already good friends. A+ to the nicest barista in the world. They have both a downstairs and an upstairs sitting area. Downstairs is more like an normal Starbucks, but the upstairs is split into two areas, including a large outside porch area. The inside upstairs has plenty of space with tables and some more comfortable seats (but watch out because it is pretty cold up there) , and the outside has the same. I''ve only experienced this outdoor porch during June, but it is one of my favorite places to go. Also very close to the Union Terrace and the Lakeshore Path if you'd like to walk after grabbing a coffee. read more

At this Starbucks you will get the worst Starbucks service in the US. Go to this Starbucks if you want white blonde baristas speaking to you condescendingly. I bought a grande ice coffee in a venti cup and the venti cup is only half full. That is hardly a grande in there. So I asked to fill it up to grande, and they literally demonstrated to me that it's their protocol and made it sound like it's a customer's fault to raise a question. I'm sorry Starbucks I was expecting some friendly explanation or at lease some hospitality in your service. I'm sorry, Starbucks. You're consistent, have very nice employees, plenty of seating and easy food options, but your bathrooms were NOT GOOD. This was probably a factor of the place being really busy... but the upstairs women's restroom is hot, humid, and was out of toilet paper for too long when I was here last time. The handle of the staircase was also too sticky for me to put my hand on it for a second without feeling grossed out. All of these bad reviews aren't considerate of how hard these employees work each day. If you don't want to wait for a drink, go somewhere else. All Starbucks are going to be busy in the mornings. They fuel an entire college campus and do it with a smile on their faces. They move so quickly, while still making drinks that don't taste rushed. I love the employees as they always are nice, even when there are 50 people waiting in the store. They will always correct an issue. Not my favorite Madison Starbucks (that honor would go to the Capitol Square location), but it's definitely a great place to engage in my typical Starbucks People Watching pastime. The fact that they have outdoor seating really ups this place's review for me; the inside is dreadfully dark and deep, like a cave. The good thing about this is that there is a lot of seating; unfortunately, being State Street, all of the seating is pretty much occupied all of the time. Let me say this first. I am a Starbucks barista at a different store. So keep that in mind while reading this review. I used to always go to this Starbucks. But lately I have been refusing to go. My most recent trip to this Starbucks had me so angry and upset at the way the baristas treat their customers. I had ordered a Salted Caramel Mocha Frappuccino made with heavy cream instead of whole milk. (tastes like ice cream I highly recommend it!) Anyways, I received my drink and immediately knew it wasn't made correctly. But I tasted it just to make sure. It didn't taste right either. So I got the baristas attention and politely asked "Excuse me, I'm sorry but I don't believe this was made correctly." The girl looks at me and says "Well I didn't make it." She then shouted in the store "WHO MADE THE FRAPPUCCINO?!" To be honest that was highly inappropriate. The barista who made my drink looked at me and said "Was it not supposed to be made with heavy cream?" And I said "Well yes it was, but I don't believe it was made correctly." And she just gave me an extremely dirty look and said "it's made correctly." Rolled her eyes and kept on working. I tried to talk to her to express my concern but she literally ignored me as I was trying to talk to her. I didn't mention I was an employee by the way. So I just left pretty sure I won't return again. The golden rule of being a barista is if the customer says the drink isn't right, we cast our pride aside and just remake the drink. Customer satisfaction is number one. Apparently not at this location. read more

Starbucks is in such a good location. I find their stuff to be a bit pricey, and sometimes their drinks are hit and miss. i'm a huge fan of the caramel macchiato. It's got a decent coffee flavor, with a bit of added sweetness. However, the caramel sauce doesn't mix with the drink (if you get it iced), so you sometimes drink up clumps of caramel sauce. Their specialty warm drinks either taste like sugary milk or just plain milk, and sometimes their frappuccinos taste watery. While being hit and miss and somewhat pricey, they're in a good location if you need a quick pick-me-up. Service can be pretty quick too, even with long lines. read more

Surprisingly good Earl Gray tea. Last time I was on State Street I tried another coffee house and had a not-so-good experience. The young barista didn't get my Star trek reference to "tea......Earl Grey....hot. In fact she said she never heard of the show. Ah, the young! She was very pleasant and the service was quick. She probably thought I was an amusing old coot (I'll accept that as a compliment) I also bought a scone. Way better than the coffee place of bad experience. This rare exception provides a combination of professionalism, efficiency, personality and consistency and is a Capital Square coffee spot that engages in repeat business. I really do enjoy Starbucks beverages, but the State Street location is never a fun experience. It's always crowded (never any seats) and the staff seem to be very transient/apathetic to customers. On a recent visit, they had a promotion where they were giving stickers when you bought a holiday beverage. The cashier told me he couldn't give me a sticker because "they were out." The promotion earned you a free holiday beverage for every 5 you bought. Rather than contacting a manager or giving me a discount, he simply told me it wasn't his problem. On a different visit, the baristas were talking about some of the items in the display case and saying how terribly they taste. I'll be the first to admit that I don't love all the Starbucks food, but if I was working there, I don't think I'd be broadcasting that audibly enough for customers to hear. If you want Starbucks and you're downtown, go to the one on MLK near the Capitol. read more

Needless to say how good Starbucks coffees are, the atmosphere in this Starbucks is very soothing, I like reading, telecommuting or even studying for exam at upstairs, where big couches are provided. This location is open again. It is brighter & there is more room to order. I am disappointed that they went with flamingos instead of Badgers. The stadium mural was amazing. The window seating is Very limited & only 4 people can sit there. Unfortunately, they never give up the seats. The window "bar" was better. There was more merch before the remodel. I've been in this Starbucks many times and the lines always seem to be super long and wait times are loooong. If you have time to waste for coffee that's ok, this is your place. ERC across the street and the UBS a block down have better coffee and much quicker service times. I would only go to this place if I wanted one of their seasonal specialty drinks. Their food and prepackaged foods are all pretty sugary and unhealthy. The prepackaged stuff is full of preservatives and 'extras'. I really don't understand why they don't have their plain coffee out for patrons to quickly fill up their own cups during busy times. If you order after someone with a PSL, you end up waiting close to 5 mins or more for a plain coffee. Have a couple of coffee carafes out for your patrons in a hurry to self serve. Their business model here is not for the customer. They're too worried that a couple of customers may take more plain coffee than they ordered. Coffee is cheap and I'm sure you actually waste (or error) more in a day than what would be taken by shady customers if given the opportunity to fill our own cups. Put a couple of carafes next to the condiment area for self serve. If you can't trust your customers, how can they trust you? This same review can be written for most of Starbucks I've been in. This Starbucks is always freezing cold in the summer, uncomfortable. But usually, it's comfortable in winter and has a nice lounge upstairs and a second set of bathrooms, which is wonderful. However, today the lounge was freezing cold, causing everyone there to leave on their coats. There is a fireplace that was not lit, so I asked the barista why it wasn't lit, and he said, "it smells like gas, so we have not lit it this year!" It's very cold, and there are lots of nice coffee shops in the area with better coffee and much better food. Really-you can't call a repairman? And the wifi did not work well. read more

Usually I'm a big fan of Starbucks locations but this one... it is no where near the top of my Starbucks-love list. The staff is friendly, so they mega-props for that. But since it is located in the heart of State Street, it is ALWAYS crowded. I'm usually able to snag a table, but the pickings are slim. My other major complaint is that the wireless rarely works. It is spotty at best. Maybe it is the large number of students using it at the same time, but it never allows me to fully connect and work online. It's also a pretty loud location. Not in an annoying way, but with the music filtering through the speakers and the amount of students working on group projects, it is not easy to work on something that requires concentration. read more

This morning my husband and I visited this location on State St and had a very pleasant experience. They accidentally served my husband bagel bites instead of egg bites and we had to wait for only a short amount of time for them to correct the error but when the barista came back to us with the egg bites she also gave us two gift cards each for $4 and apologized for the mistake and said our next drink is on them. Honestly she didn't have to do that. I would have been back in there tomorrow morning even without the kind gesture. I used to work for Starbucks and this stood out in my mind as a really great customer service experience that should be recognized. read more

Starbucks coffee is utter garbage. If you want quality coffee, I can give you five other coffee shops on State Street which serve coffee that doesn't taste like it was filtered through an old muffler. Why four stars, then? The service. I have never ever been made to feel like I'm bothering them when I order my drink. THAT is why I go to Starbucks versus the hipper coffee establishments down the street. This location has the best service I've ever seen ANYWHERE. I've never seen such friendly baristas. Is the coffee spiked? Look, if you work at a Starbucks near campus, you're going to deal with all sorts of characters: bratty undergrads, random homeless, impatient businessmen who have important meetings, etc, etc. I've never seen an employee lose their cool.
