I am a commuting morning regular at the Merch Mart Starbucks, (so much so, that Ashley - who is super kind and always friendly, truly she needs a call out- knows my name, which is impressive since my name is unusual and recognizes me) and this morning's experience just exampled what a superior customer service experience should look like. This morning I went to the mobile line to pick up my order per my usual and was told that sadly, my breakfast sandwich selection was out. I wasn't bummed. It happens. Its Friday. But even IF I was bummed, the team made sure I went away with a smile on my face. First, Ashley apologized and tried to make it right on the spot and offered me a variety of different selections to choose from so that I still had something to eat, I thanked her but declined and asked if I could have a refund instead, Ashley directed Christoper (who is also always nice and friendly as well) to help me over to the register so I didn't have to wait in line for a refund. He apologized and then touched base with a person behind the counter to tell them of the situation and they then directed me to a register right away. I didn't have to wait. I didn't have to explain myself to 5 different people. I was treated like a VIP. Even during the refund process, another guy (I don't know his name) was apologizing and offering me different selections. He said he didn't want me to go without breakfast or be hungry, really, it was more from a caring side then even a customer service side. (I mean sure, it was customer service, but he DELIVERED it as caring...that's a nice touch) Truly I wasn't even upset, but like i said, if I was, they would have turned that around! In the end they sent me away with a muffin and a smile and an experience I needed to write a review about. The Merch Mart in Chicago is NOT a slow location. This place has lines that curve the corner for mobile orders, so its not like they had alot of time on their hands to do all this and yet, they did. Funny note? I work for a company that happens to proudly have Starbucks as one our wonderful clients. They don't know this.They just confirmed why we are so proud to have partnered with them. This location needs management to step in when they see they are drowning. Clover at the Mart, I enjoy the selection's of reserve coffee (Panama, West Java) at this location. There are long lines here but you get a great service and a smile when you order your favorite brew. When I used to work in the Chicago Merchandise Mart, I used to frequent this Starbucks. It is easily one of their busiest around the country. But, they do a great job of moving people through. Not my favorite Starbucks to go to. Since it is in Merchandise Mart, it is always super busy, usually big lane to wait for your order and then also for your drink. In addition, the sitting area is not very quiet and cozy as in many other Starbucks, on the contrary, it is pretty loud and busy and often times hard to even find a place to sit. If you just need a quick drink to go, this place is certainly convenient if you are around, but my tip would be to order it via Starbucks app so you do not have to wait in line. If you want to have a nice Starbucks sit down experience and get some work done or anything like that, there are many better Starbucks locations to go to only a few blocks away. But I would like to say that this relatively poor star rating has nothing to do with their nice and friendly customer service. read more

I had no intent to write a review for this Starbucks because it's a mobile order grab and go as I get on the train type of stop for me. The last three days I show up and my order is waiting. The pick up area is at the edge of the walkway so they could easy ignore the quick moving customers. The staff has been great. Get in, get out. That's what this Starbucks is all about. Despite the speed and robotic like nature of this bux location's assembly line, customer service here does not lack. In the mornings the lines can get super long, but no need to worry. This is one of the speediest most efficient Starbucks I've ever been to. The people that patronize this shop are Starbucks pros which I appreciate, because so am I. These folks know their order and are ready to rock. God speed to any Starbucks newbie who tries to place an order here during a high-traffic time. Speed bumps in this well-oiled machine will not be tolerated! This 'Bucks can really churn out a *ton* of beverages. I've seen super long lines and the staff really seems to waste no time in getting folks their caffeinated gold. There isn't really any room to sit down inside this location, but directly into the atrium you'll find a bunch of tables ripe for the taking. As mentioned, staff is expert and quick but not overly friendly. All the coffee accoutrements are off to the left (while facing the store), which helps pull the flow of people away from the narrow entrance and pick up area. Mobile ordering is always a win here, and my drinks have always been made right. I didnt think this was the fastest Starbucks I've been to, but definitely one of the better ones. The line went smoothly on a Friday afternoon. I cant imagine how crazy this place can get during the morning rush hour though. They have the line area very organized so a group of 20+ people will know where the line starts and begins. The location also means that it gets really busy sometimes, but the baristas do not flinch. They are the friendliest people I have encountered, even if there are 20 people in line. I don't like being herded though, and I definitely don't like being barked at, which is really all they have time for. I'll stick to getting my coffee somewhere not as congested, thank you very much. After the revamp, I'd say this is one of the most upscale looking Starbucks out there. However, I absolutely dislike my experience here. Yes it is a great location - people getting their morning caffeine fix after before or after the train, and yes I expect you to be busy but the chaotic movements of the baristas just make it a very stressful environment. They look busy, do not engage in a short 30 second interaction during ordering. They constantly glance at somewhere else like they are needed over there while I am left staring at the register. 8 out of 10 times I get a coffee without room when I specifically told them "with room". That said, I do like the cream/sugar section being outside of the Starbucks itself so it helps with the congestion issue a tiny bit. I cannot imagine getting fancy drinks other than straight-up coffee or tea during rush hours in the morning. Just cannot fathom. read more

There are lots of options for coffee and tea in the Mart. I do love Starbucks, but many mornings I get in the line and walk right back out of it. Why? It's so slow and disorganized that it is impossible to tell how long it will take to get your order. This morning, I decided to risk it. There were two people in line in front of me, so it seemed like a safe bet. I counted the number of employees behind the counter: 8! Odds are with me?! Not so fast. How long do you think I waited for an iced coffee? Answer: 20 minutes. This place is a total cluster. So disorganized. The pre-mobile swarm of people definitely does not help. I'm not sure who manages this location but he or she needs to designate some specific tasks/roles to the staff of EIGHT! When there's a morning rush, some organization would help. Call off the search folks, this is hands down the best Starbucks in the city of Chicago and here is why kids: The service is OUTSTANDING. Once your order is placed (usually after a long line that always seems to move quickly) it literally takes moments to get your drink. And I base this on my usual order of Venti Americano which seems to take other Starbucks f-o-r-o-e-v-e-r to make. They always have a wide variety of treats, sandwiches and the usual muffin/bagel what-not of other Starbucks. They are often giving out free samples of new drinks or snacks. As a Grad student, these freebies are always enjoyed and appreciated. Everyone working here is so nice and seem to really want to know if indeed I am having a nice day. I'm all about Starbucks and it's been apart of my daily routine for years. However, what triggered Starbucks to be what it is, is not only are you paying top dollar for the brand or "status" but you used to be paying for the experience as well. This Starbucks without a doubt is one of the busiest Starbucks I've ever been to. That said, you think a Starbucks doing this amount of business would have enough staff for the baristas to still deliver that $10 experience in which you're buying. However, this location falls short of this. Every time I visit this location it's as though I'm doing something to bother these baristas. They are always busy talking and on some occasions, it's so bad that they won't even look at me. I know, we all have bad days, but this happens 2-3x week. It's completely unacceptable. read more

This is by far the absolute best location I have been to and I have been to many. This location in the Merchandise Mart gets a rather heavy amount of traffic. They are especially busy in the morning rush hour. On several occasions the line for mobile orders alone went down the hallway past two storefronts, alas, they still got everyone out of there in a timely manner. They are not prepared for the volume. 8am and there are 22 people waiting for their coffees and another 30 or so in line. I had plenty of time to count. I got my Venti Peppermint Hot Chocolate and walked to my office after a 25 minutes wait. I prepared for the sweet minty taste only to discover it tasted more like spoiled skim milk with a hint of coffee. WTH? I walked back and explained the situation. They attempted to remake my drink and again, spoiled skim. The third time they pumped more chocolate and it tasted a little better but still no peppermint.
