I religiously patronize the Spring Valley Compass Coffee every morning. I mean EVERY morning!…read more...and it's by far NOT the closest coffee shop from my home! Of course, I've tried the 4 others that are closer and on the way. But the atmosphere at others? lacking. My 4-shot-extra-dry-almond-milk-macchiato? Meh.. at the other places. But I think it's the people and community that really tip the scales. As soon as the Com-Coff door is ajar, Morgan (one of Compass Coffee's finest) or any of the other baristas greet me by name. Other regular customers I meet there have identical sentiments. The staff is efficient, quick and work with grace; and sometimes with a bit of wit ... even despite recent the occasion(s) when there less a barista or two. :)

For those unfamiliar, Compass Coffee is like the local version of Starbucks. Out of all the local…read morecoffee shops, it's home to the most locations across the D.C. area. Started by two veterans, Compass has weathered some bumpy roads over the last few years with leadership, splits, and unions. That said, this location is quite large. Ironically, it's close to a Starbucks in Spring Valley in Northwest D.C. Walk inside and order a pastry or one of their many coffees. Their almond butter latte is among my favorites. The actual space is large with plenty of seats from tables, booth seating, to high top tables. There are plenty of outlets and strong free WiFi. Restrooms are in the very back.

The cappuccino was one of the best I've had too. We ordered and everything was out to us within 10 minutes. Our server was highly courteous and very professional. We live the open cafe atmosphere too. Very warm and inviting. We did pay $4.00 for off street ( one hour) parking but that is Washington D.C. Everything you do in that town comes at a price. Especially the 400 plus red light and speed cameras throughout the City. We will definitely revisit this restaurant when we are in NW D.C. AND DRIVE VERY CAUTIOUSLY! I'm praying we made it through the gauntlet!

The staff have treated me with kindness and respect, and I always feel welcome. I especially appreciate how they check in throughout my visit. The food is always delicious and satisfying, and the drinks are consistently refreshing, especially on a warm, spring day. The café itself is also very beautiful and photogenic! The large glass windows make the space feel so bright and energizing. One employee in particular, Mae, is always so sweet, attentive, and ready to help whenever I need assistance. Thank you to Mae and the entire team at Bluestone Lane Spring Valley Café! I'll be returning often.

But what really sets it apart is the owner herself and her team. She has a genuine warmth that you feel the moment you walk in, and they all clearly take pride in making sure every guest leaves happy. Recently, the owner told me that this summer marks her first full year in business, and it's easy to see why she's made it. If you stop in, tell her congratulations!

There's plenty of seating, though I wish their back tables were smaller because then one person using their laptop takes over an entire four-top. Service is a bit slow when the place gets crowded. We left a little early when a large group of book club folks came in and tried to take every available chair they could (they should've called ahead to give the staff a heads up). Food is decent enough, especially the tasty shakshuka with lentils, but the omelet was quite dry. And maybe it's just me getting old, but the classical background music was way too loud for a Sunday. There's enough people chattering to keep the place lively. This space was empty for awhile, so I'm glad Yours Cafe is here, and I wish them success.

I ended up asking for more ice which helped. Honestly, it did the trick and gave me a boost of energy which is what I needed! Staff were super accommodating and immediately put more in, without dumping any coffee out since it was filled to the top already. I appreciated the thought of giving me a bigger cup to make room for more ice. Loved their bakery items that I believe are part of Dolan Uyghur. I ended up ordering the brownie cookie and tried a bit of a friends honey cake she had ordered. The cake tasted like a honey graham cracker. The honey drizzle and cream filling gave it a nice light flavor. The brownie cookie I found a bit dry on the outside but moist on the inside. I typically like my cookies soft and slightly undercooked. I'd go back to try the white chocolate matcha cookie.
