This was my first time at Starbread Bakery the new location on Broadway in Chula Vista, CA. The first time I tried this bread was at a friend's party and thought it was so delicious. I was happy to see they opened a new location in my area. Starbread is a popular Filipino bakery in San Diego known for its signature "Señorita Bread." The bread is soft, buttery, and sweet. I ordered the 35 piece of Señorita Bread for $28. The bread sticks have a sweet filling inside and was a hit at my aunts house!! My freshly made order took about 3 minutes. I stopped by looking for something sweet before work. My girlfriend searched for a bakery near Chula Vista and we happened to find this place. I had tried their bread once before when a friend brought some to me, and I immediately recognized the logo. When we arrived, the bakery was spotless, bright, and welcoming. I couldn't remember what I had liked before, so I started looking through the display case full of donuts and ended up choosing almost every flavor! I also grabbed some of the butter sugar bread displayed near the front. The female employee was so nice and friendly. She asked if I wanted to try one of their most popular items, and that's when I discovered the famous Señorita Bread. It was served warm and tasted absolutely amazing. I loved it so much that I bought a whole box to share with my staff at my restaurant. Everything was delicious, and they were very generous with the fillings in the donuts. This is definitely my new favorite bakery, and I'll be coming back often. Highly recommend! read more

We love the Spanish bread here. It's always warm, light, and fluffy. It kind of tastes like pandesal with butter and sugar. They have plenty of other pastries to choose from, but we always come for the Spanish bread. It's not quite as amazing the next day, so it's best enjoyed fresh. The service is always good. read more

I love señorita bread. I used to get it all the time when I lived in the Bay Area so a few years ago when I heard it was opening here I was excited. I rarely make it to Chula Vista though and certainly not in the AM. On this occasion it happened to work out. Parking was easy and there was no line. The staff was friendly and welcoming. I ordered a box of 4 (I had to refrain from more but they gave me 5, thank you). I took them to go. I ate one in the car on my way to my destination (I couldn't wait). The flavor was there but it wasn't cooked enough and was doughy and raw in the middle not fluffy like the ones I've had in the past (and in the photos in other reviews). Kind of disappointing. Came here after a meal in the area since I've always been curious when passing by this place. The store was empty, and they had a bell on the door so the employee came out immediately. They had a variety of pastries and other baked goods, ranging from individual items to pre-packaged bulk items. The starbread is linearly priced, and it was served nice and warm. The starbread was fairly pillowy with a mildly sweet taste. Would be curious to try some of the other items to see if they had a more unique taste or more complex flavors. read more

I love all the bake goods that they have there especially the malasadas and mochinuts. A couple suggestions is to use their box without charging a dollar especially if I am buying a lot of items. The frosting gets all smudged in the wrapper. Also, the person working there needs to be more welcoming and patient. read more

A coworker brought these to work and everybody was hooked! OMG I was surprised how much I liked this tiny little sweet buttered bread! I honestly couldn't stop thinking about it! Thankfully my other coworker remembered the name on the box and I was able to hunt this place down! Filipino bread also known as Señorita bread. It's light, fluffy, sugary and buttery! It's the perfect size, but you just can't have one! Definitely hooked on these. We bought a box of 20 the first time and each of us easily had four pieces. So there was nothing left over. The next visit we bought a box of 15 just for us. Yes, that's how much I loved them! I didn't want to eat them all in one sitting this time and wanted to save some for later. Unfortunately these don't stay well over night on the counter or in the fridge. They're just not the same the day after. I tried heating them up in the toaster oven and they just don't come out the same as if you bought them day of. So sad! The only reason why I would want to keep them for the next day is that it's far for me to go there and it's not convenient. I can't just grab a few anytime I want. The store also sells donuts, mochi donuts, Malasadas, other breads rolls, brownies, cupcakes and donut holes. Hubs enjoyed the different Malasadas. I couldn't help by getting a giant brownie too. I love a soft brownie with a crisp edge. Overall it was not as moist as I would've like it. Each roll is just under a dollar at $0.80 cents each no matter how many pieces you get. The store is very clean and organized. Staff is friendly. No issues parking. The rolls always come straight from the back. Is it worth a trip, absolutely! Can't pass up giving this place a try! My friends and I were next door at Tacos el Gordo and wanted a sweet treat after. One of our group was familiar with Starbread Bakery from the Bay, so we went to get some señorita bread from there. The store was empty and clean. They sell their señorita bread in multiples of 5, and the price scales proportionally. They also have some packaged breads at the checkout counter and a display case with donuts and malasadas. I got 5 señorita breads for $4, and a guava malasada. When I was handed my bag of goods, the señorita breads were still warm! I've never had this type of bread before so I have no comparison. However, the fat, cigar-shaped breads were really satisfying while hot and fresh. They are buttery, sugary, and chewy inside. The texture was a bit homogenous for me, but still quite tasty. I had a second one hours later and it was not as nice. I think they would definitely benefit from a reheat if you have leftovers. The guava malasada was not my favorite. The jam inside was more musty than fragrant, and very artificially red. The dough itself was well-fried and soft, even fresh out of the refrigerator on the second day. I love the textural difference of the sugar crystals on the surface, compared to a traditional donut glaze. I ended up scooping the guava filling out of the middle and eating the fried bread. Overall, while I enjoyed the señorita breads, Chula Vista is a bit of a trek and I would not go out of my way to get them. I am interested in trying Starbread in the Bay, to see if they taste different. read more

I wish I lived closer to this, because everything was amazing. Stopped by around 1pm on a weekend (my first mistake). They were out of all ube items, but I did manage to get the last guava malasada. Also got one each of the pre-packaged dulce de leche and ube cheese bread by the cash register. Also got 8 senorita breads. The senorita bread is a must, super soft, with drizzles of liquid sugar in between the rolls. Cannot emphasize how soft this bread is. The malasada guava filling was soooo good - can def tell there is nothing artificial tasting about it. The remaining two breads were both very soft, good, but I'd probably try something next time that was previously sold out. Friendly staff! Haven't had this place in years. It did not disappoint. Whenever I'm in the area I go to or I make it a pit stop when I'm south. My favorite is the senorita bread. This time I only got 10 pieces for $8 Must eat it in the parking lot, it's my the proper way to eat while it's HOT. I eat 5 of them in the matter of minutes. It's a light airy sweet addicting. The best señorita bread I've ever put in my mouth! I was really never a fan of them, but I've heard this place is known for them so naturally, I had to get them. We came here about 30 mins after opening and there were two other people in the bakery. Service was pretty quick even though the employees keep on going in and out to prep orders. The cashier who takes orders isn't actually actively doing anything back there as you can see their shoes firmly planted just on the other side of the door listening to the kitchen staff's conversation that we can all overhear out front -- none of it related to anything in the bakery. This place has been open for nearly 4 years and they still don't have their system together. Omg!! The star bread came out warm!! I bought a bunch for my last day of radiation. I bought some for the doctor, nurses, and the check in lady. The bread smell so good. I couldn't leave the parking lot without taking a bite of my star bread. It's so good!! The service is amazing!! The lady who took my order is very patient. Starbread is an awesome little bakery that originated in NorCal and finally made its way down to San Diego. Filipino-founded, the "star" of their baked goods line up is their Senorita Bread, also known as Spanish bread... And let me tell you, they be whipping those thangs up warm and fresh, made to order! Imagine a Filipino Krispy Kreme where instead of just OG glazed that people would order boxes of, it's this Senorita Bread. They've got a separate menu just for ordering specific amounts. And even an iconic white box with their iconic red and green logo too. I love that there's variety on the menu too. Cupcakes, mochi donuts, malasadas, ube pandesal versions of the Spanish bread. Highly recommend consuming everything when it's fresh (or re-heated up), ain't nothing like it! It's a small shop and somewhat easy to miss but once you've been, you'll never forget it's there. Luckily I started going just recently so that *new new* hype died down a bit and I didn't have to wait in a line. How does anyone rate this less than 5 stars???? This is the best pastry (their señorita bread) I have ever had. This is coming from someone who doesn't even like sweets that much. When they serve you the senorita bread, it comes out hot and it literally melts in your mouth. It's the perfect amount of sweetness (not too sweet). I have truly have never had something like it!! I love that I am supporting a family business too. They also have delicious mochi donuts. You truly cannot go wrong here!! I brought a box of senorita bread and donuts to an office and they LOVED it. I am so glad I have come across this place! Within San Diego, they have a location in Chula Vista and Poway. We had wonderful service and she was able to answer all the questions we had. We decided to try this place out. It's hard to find a really good donut locally so here's how it went. But first of all, I was honestly there to give their ube donut a try. The establishment was clean and orderly. Shelves were well stocked and prices were pretty average. The young lady that helped us could have been more helpful but it wasn't bad service. I did try the Ube mochi donut. It was okay but not great. I was a bit disappointed as it wasn't what I've had elsewhere. The texture was too dense and not soft like mochi should be. The chocolate donut was good. We also tried their coconut and dulce de leche bread. Sorry but not a fan. The bread again was too dense and the filling wasn't smooth. Been here multiple times and finally giving its deserving review. Starbread's Bakery is famous for its señorita breads. Got there right after 7AM so I can enjoy my morning coffee with the warm, delicious and buttery bread. Bought 20 pcs. This will not last long because it's so good! Also ordered Pan De Ciosa rolls which is also our normal order every time visiting the bakery. Yum! Gotta love seniorita bread. I'm originally from Vallejo. Where there's another Starbread location. So I was really happy to discover this one! The bakery is very spacious and clean. I was greeted by a cashier who worked fast and efficiently. I opted for 10 pieces of seniorita bread for $6. Not a bad deal! I also snagged ube stuffed pandesal. Price was $6 for 3 pieces. Saw that they had a Starbread in San Diego, so I was up early and drove down to get some. $.80 each. I got a box of 15 for $12.00. While fresh and hot, they were different than the ones I have had before up in the Bay Area. Southern California has better burritos, Northern California has better Starbread! They weren't as buttery and sweet as I had remembered, and they also were a bit hollow in the middle. The ones up North are more dense and "fuller". Still a decent bakery item for breakfast. I'm not driving down here on purpose to get these again, but if I was nearby I might grab a couple. read more

Horrible. Absolutely horrible customer service today. We love starbread bakery and never have any problems with them but today was not the day. When we showed up nobody was at the front and when the cashier finally came back to the front we told her we called our order in and here to pick up. She looked surprise and said "oh I thought she was Flo" indicating that she was confused and was planning to give our order to someone else. She then goes to the back and gets the order and gives it to the other lady! Then the cashier has the audacity to tell us that we were late (3 minutes) and that's why she gave our order away! THEN! she says it's going to be a 20 minute wait for us to get our order !!! That is not ok! At least take ownership that you made a mistake. You don't put the blame on the customer that because we were 3 minutes late you have the audacity to tell us it's our fault. No. I will not recommend this place ever again. I've been here twice already. I remember having señorita bread when I was in Daly City and I'm so excited I have a place nearby to go to. Hands down best señorita bread I've ever had!
