    Carioca
    Hannah H.

I came here twice on my San Diego vacation. Once on the way in and once on the way out. We showed up later in the afternoon Friday and were served fresh pandesal. I realized you have to ask the staff at the counter for the hot ones that everyone talks about in their reviews. It was soooo good. We even stopped on our way out to have for the week. Both times the staff were kind and attentive. They have a variety of other baked goods like carioca which we had and it was tasty! It's great because it's right next to seafood city which is why we had come to this area anyways. I'll definitely be back!

    Wait time is too long

The bread is delicious. Not going to argue about that, but it's Thanksgiving day and we've been waiting for over 1 hour and 45 min. We are still standing in line. If I would've known it was going to take this long I probably wouldn't have waited. Service is slow. I understand it's a holiday but the wait is just too much. No bread is worth waiting 2 hours+. Update: posted picture for approximate wait time. We weren't helped out yet when this picture was taken. Add another 15-20 min Update: came home only to find that I was 2 pan de Sal short. Really?

Looking for a good filipino bakery?!? Bread deluxe is definitely a wonderful spot. The workers are so kind & helpful. My favorite would also be the ube pandasal!

FRESH OUT THE OVEN PANDESAL AT 1:30pm

Came here because I was craving fresh pandesal at 1:30pm on New Years day and their pandesal did not disappoint. It literally just came out of the oven. So soft and fluffy! Best pandesal I've ever had!

Catching up on Yelp reviews. This is for a visit to Bread Deluxe back on 7/21/18. Despite just having eaten at nearby Goldilocks, our relative brought us to this place. OMG the smell of freshly baked goods, especially pan de sal sent me back to my childhood baking with my late father. I wanted it all the Filipino carbs! Ended up with Spanish rolls, pan de sal (both still warm from the oven) and puto. The latter I gobbled up back at the hotel. Next time, I'd pack another check-in suitcase just to fill with all these items and hope TSA doesn't snack on them. Freeze and ration them once I return to Shoreline, WA. Yeah that's the game plan. Clothes? Who needs clothes? I'll take some of the above, hopia, ube bread, mamon, how about just two of everything in the shop? Like the slogan at Jimmy John's...free smells! Make that free heavenly smells at Bread Deluxe. Bread Deluxe....National City/SoCal residents are so lucky!

Great spot for Filipino baked goods. They have bomb cheese rolls and ube ensymada. The coconut bread is the best! Love this spot!

Cute little place! I've been coming here since I was younger and I still love it. They have an amazing selection of breads and desserts and everything is fresh! This bakery is a bit hidden, so just start walking towards seafood city and it should be the suite next door on the left. It's also never crowded and the staff is always so sweet and kind!

I always come here for fresh pandesal!!! They have other delicious pastries such as Hopia, Puto, ube, banana bread and so much more!!

I asked my coworker if she's been here since she's Filipino and lives near this bakery. She said she hasn't, but after looking at some photos on Yelp, she said she did- but didn't know the name of the bakery LOL.... She brought some goodies to work today for the office. The white puto was just for me! The purple puto, pan de sal, pork meatloaf, and hopia were to be shared with the rest of our coworkers. I love pan de sal and this one was pretty good. We tried it with the warm meatloaf that she brought, which was tasty. I also had hopia for the first time. There are different colored markings on top of this round, sweet roll. I picked the yellow one, which was supposed to have pork inside, but there was nothing in it! I still liked it though. The other fillings were mung bean and something else that she said didn't taste very good. I'm glad to try all these baked goods today for breakfast. I wonder how their polvoron tastes like....maybe I'll have to check out this bakery myself to see what else they offer.

So, if you never had a pandesal and you love bread, you must try this! Get them warm and fresh, with butter, OMG! But, they have so many other desserts and food bites to try. We specifically came for the fresh pandesal, which I was craving and my husband, the best, searched for a place to enjoy some fresh pandesal. This last visit we got Ensamayda (cheese roll) for our daughters. They also have the Ube Ensamayda. Besides the small sized pandesal we selected, we got a Mocha Roll too. Everything was delicious. I like the small sized pandesal but I could definitely eat the larger ones too. Parking is crazy here in this long strip mall full of food shops. Not only is parking crazy busy, but the spaces are small. You can find me back here at this Filipino Bakery when in the area!

We also split a croque monsieur which was warm, cheesy, and perfect to balance out all the pastries. I wish they had real cutlery (vs only plastic disposables) for dine in customers. Our family shared all these goodies and a plastic knife was no match for some of them. Overall, really good quality pastries and breads, worth the early lineup. They sell their señorita bread in multiples of 5, and the price scales proportionally. They also have some packaged breads at the checkout counter and a display case with donuts and malasadas. I got 5 señorita breads for $4, and a guava malasada. When I was handed my bag of goods, the señorita breads were still warm! I've never had this type of bread before so I have no comparison. However, the fat, cigar-shaped breads were really satisfying while hot and fresh. They are buttery, sugary, and chewy inside. The texture was a bit homogenous for me, but still quite tasty. I had a second one hours later and it was not as nice. I think they would definitely benefit from a reheat if you have leftovers. The guava malasada was not my favorite. The jam inside was more musty than fragrant, and very artificially red. The dough itself was well-fried and soft, even fresh out of the refrigerator on the second day. I love the textural difference of the sugar crystals on the surface, compared to a traditional donut glaze. I ended up scooping the guava filling out of the middle and eating the fried bread. Overall, while I enjoyed the señorita breads, Chula Vista is a bit of a trek and I would not go out of my way to get them. I am interested in trying Starbread in the Bay, to see if they taste different.
