Such a great restaurant! An actual real pleasant surprise in the suburbs!!! Great atmosphere! Fantastic decor! Amazing food!!! Only downer is sometimes the parking is challenging.. but still worry the effort. read more

Starbelly is the Boston Pizza of "fine dining." A menu filled with buzzword descriptors that set expectations which Starbelly does not meet. Upon arrival the hostess told us that there were "no available tables" and when prompted for a estimated wait time she tapped away on the Ipad for 2 minutes before finally answering "I really don't know? But I'd say an hour." Fine, we took places at the "open kitchen" but as we walked to our tables the dining room, which we had been told was full, we noticed far more empty tables than waited ones - a curious trend that remained throughout my entire "meal." Enter the food. Starting with the baked brie - an overpriced brick of lukewarm cheese with a handful of walnuts and dried cranberries clearly added after the "baking" process. This leads me to believe that whoever added this to the menu has never actually eaten a baked brie. Gnocchi, a bold menu choice - there is a lot that can go wrong with gnocchi and my meal at Starbelly was a tour-de-force through most of them. The gnocchi itself was gummy and soggy, swimming in a sauce that I am convinced was comprised entirely of pureed garlic. This is a menu item that exists solely to tempt the unwitting with promises of earthy truffle and sharp grana padano cheese that the end result does not fulfill. Perhaps if they had used less garlic I might have tasted them. We left without dessert, and on our way back out through the still largely empty dining room I noticed an unfortunate customer tearing through a chicken finger so thoroughly overcooked that I could have sewn it into a pair of leather gloves. That look of skeptical disappointment completely summed up my experience. Starbelly is not worth the ten minute drive let alone the 20-40 dollars they expect for their food. read more

My partner and I love this restaurant! The food and drinks are always fantastic and the service is great. Not as good as it once was, but that might be a symptom of the pandemic. None the less we look forward to our next date night at Starbelly. read more

This is one of my fave restaurants. I love the garden setting with the patio lights. And the food is outstanding. The place has a lively feel to it, but is not so loud that you can't hear the the conversation of the people you are with. There are lots of areas you can sit. Good wine choices. It is definitely a great choice for dates, or heading out for an girls night out read more

Are you kidding me? Rude hostess, terrible salmon and halibut served atop stringy asparagus and cold risotto. They ran out of coffee cream and staff took ages to have someone run next door to the grocery store! Don't waste your money. It was packed on our visit but we did not see why anyone would want to eat here. read more

Great food. The root beer French toast is tasty! Kid friendly and they have high chairs. read more

My wife and I received gift cards to Starbelly for Christmas from a good friend. We finally got around to going tonight for dinner. I realised I didn't know anything about this place so to Yelp I went. After reading the previous reviews I was nervous to say the least! They all had a common thread of 'Overpriced" and "Delayed food". To be honest I didn't have high hopes. We got a good impression when we first walked in and it only went up from there. I asked the server some questions and found out it is under new management and it sure shows. She was one of the original servers and even she said it has improved a lot. Prices were right on the money for what we got. I had the burger ($15) with fries and in house smoked bacon and in house made bun, according to the menu. My wife had mushroom risotto which she ate all of accept for the two forkfuls I got to try. Hers was $17 and I would order it next time. I would definitely go to this place over the Gastro Pub in the same plaza, way better service and much better bang for the buck. So if you have been here before I encourage you to try it again as our experience was nothing like what the previous reviews had experienced (Food time was great; we arrived at 5:30 and were eating main course by 6:10 after splitting an app), and if you haven't been you should go! Definitely a good addition to this area. read more

Came for a Saturday brunch with a friend, wanted to stay local in the SE. The atmosphere was great and it looks like it could be a great place to check out at night. We had simple eggs Benedict. It was okay, I had asked for it on tomatoes or spinach and it came plated on butter lettuce, which truthfully was just odd. Brunch was good, but nothing exceptional. I would have been eager to try their dinner menu, but we felt a bit rushed by the servers to leave, even though the place was empty. That kind of service didn't leave me with the desire to hurry back or stay loyal to the SE. read more

This place is absolutely gorgeous! It reminds me of a beautiful French oyster bar. The seating is very comfortable. We come here quite regularly with my grandma, who lives nearby. She loves the mac & cheese and chicken fingers. They are so yummy looking, and tastes gourmet. My husband and I usually order the lox Benedict. This Benedict is probably the best you can got in town! Although, it's weird that it comes with a salad... That's the last thing I want for breakfast. Fruit would be more appropriate. We've also had the lentil pie, which is unique and delicious. We've had the fish as well - it comes on a nice bed of grains, if I remember correctly. I just wish, as preferring to eat vegetarian, that there were more options on the dinner menu. Also, the coffee is never good, which deters us sometimes from going for brunch. :( read more

Delicious menu in a trendy but casual location. The staff is always very friendly and accommodating. I love their brunch options, and their dinners are a nice option for a special occasion without breaking the bank. read more

The location is excellent and the restaurant is stunning inside. The service was excellent however the food was less than average on this night. The Burger was overcooked and had cartilage pieces in the meat almost snapped a tooth. The other entre was the Wild Boar gnocchi, it had some strange flavours to it and nothing in it seemed to blend together very well. Will try it again read more

The food was okay - Service was subpar; and they were basically out of everything that our group wanted to try. Wished to try some of the items that they were out of to give a more complete review. Unfortunate. read more

Went there for brunch. Eggs were overdone and the yolks dried up. Bacon was underdone. Hash browns came out of the freezer. Waffles were very tough and hard to cut. Who makes waffles like that? read more

Not a place to go if you're with a large group. We went here for brunch yesterday and it was not a positive experience. We waited hours for our food, service was slow and inconsistent, tables were finished eating while others were still waiting for their food to be served and many people were complaining about getting mildly warm food. Coffee cups were empty, glasses not refilled, people even had to get their own spoons. The staff seemed to try but there was just not enough of them to take care of the restaurant and our group. It's amazing that a restaurant would book in a group of 36 people, months in advance and NOT schedule additional staff to ensure proper service. On top of that, initially the organizer was told that an 18% gratuity would be added in to everyone's checks however it turned into a 20% service charge on the day of the event. The worse part? They were well aware that there were issues but nothing was done to rectify the situation (even lowering the tip to 15% would've shown some concern). I will not be going back, there's plenty of other places to eat in south Calgary. read more

Overall good experience. Service was above and beyond almost to the point of being too attentive and in your face. The complimentary platter of mixed meats and pickles was a nice touch. Menu was a little short but everyone in our group found something they liked and there were no complaints. I had the grilled Arctic char; it was nicely presented and flavourful. The accompanying potatoes where a little salty. My wife had the short ribs. They were tasty but presentation and side dishes were missing. Overall ambience is nice. Different. Not a fancy intimate place for a date... More New York hipster style night out with friends. read more

I love the ambiance of this place - it feels good as soon as you walk in! I took my daughter and her fiancé for Sunday dinner. We were early for our reservation, but didn't need to wait. There were tables available, so walk-in probably would have worked also. Our server was lovely - professional, knowledgeable and genuine. She walked us through the menu, talked about the specials, took our drink orders and left us to peruse the menu at our leisure. The 'kids' opted to start with oysters - 3 East and 3 West coast. The horseradish that came with them was, by far, the hottest I've ever tasted (which I thought was amazing!!) I elected to start with Beef Tartar, which came with a creamy (very mild) horseradish and some thin crostini. The flavours were beautiful! I tried it with the spicy horseradish too, but it overwhelmed the delicate flavour. Our mains were Grilled Octopus Wraps which my daughter loved, the Burger special (Wild Boar) which her fiancé said was really good despite him not generally liking BBQ sauces of any kind - but he said it wasn't too much or overpowering, and the Wild Boar Gnocchi which had wonderfully large gnocchi and ample boar meat. So delicious! We were compelled to try dessert too - my daughter and I split the Root Beer Doughnut & Bourbon Vanilla Gelato (SOOO good!) and her fiancé enjoyed his Peanut Butter and Banana Crème Brulee. We're all looking forward to coming back and trying something else on the diverse menu! read more

We made a reservation for 6 on a Sunday for Starbelly's market brunch. We had to wait a bit for the table to be ready as our reservation was for right when they opened. The interior of this place is very open, modern, and welcoming. For the brunch, its $25 buffet but you also can order a la carte eggs and have a custom waffle. I had a mushroom and truffle oil eggs benedict which in and of itself was filling and really tasty. But the buffet was also insanely good. They had smoked fried chicken to accompany waffles, an extensive charcuterie selection, fruit, desserts, bacon, potatoes, etc. I also really enjoyed their pineapple mimosa! Will for sure be back! read more

This is a joke ,for the money they have put out you would think they would have their A game going . When we got there no one to seat us after about five minutes we just walked in and asked if we seat ourselves , they apologized and sat us at a table overlooking the parking lot ( most tables do) . Really nice waitress's and went through the mistakes on the menu that are not available , and we had a hard time figuring out the menu .. so you can either pay 18 dollars ,or 24 dollars that's the options nothing in between . It's basically sandwiches for lunch or a burger with some salads and two soups . We were only one of two tables eating and from the time we ordered to the time the food came was over 40 minutes . I ordered the chorizo melt and it was awfull , they fried some chorizo sausage ( could have been hamburger ) and put it on a slice of bread then Melted some cheese on top of it , it was stone cold , the plate was warmer than the food . The pastrami sandwich was just that really cold pastrami with cheese slices And a dry stale bun , no condiments , nothing , terrible . Burger was a hockey puck wayyyy overcooked and dry ,once again no condiments ,very plain . They should go across the parking lot to fat burger and see how it's done . Chicken salad was bland and once again the bun was at least a day of old , not good at all . Two of us ordered fries , they were McCain fries, kinda soggy and it must been the bottom of the bag cause the longest fry in the bowl was 3/4 inch . Honestly one of the worst lunches I have ever had and I so wanted this place to be good .. Awfull and 90 bucks for 4 people to have lunch , go to fatburger or get a meat pie from save on foods you be way happier . read more

Good food and fantastic service. We had reservations on New Years Eve. There floors were horrible. I fell in my heals and have a nasty bruise on my knee. While we were enjoying our evening I counted 4 more ladies including a staff member that slid on the floors as well. Still great atmosphere and fantastic food but glad it was just a bruise. read more

For the price we had a much greater expectation. We have given this place a few chances now and each time we leave with the same underwhelming experience, sadly. The decor is nice and it has a good vibe but based on price verses what you get, we won't be back. read more

This is our go-to restaurant for family dinners. Always reliable! Staff is always friendly and food is always good.

Starbelly has been on my list of restaurants to try for a while and I finally went last week. The restaurant is really big, spacious and chic. I was planning to try some of the more creative dishes on the menu but when I sat down I wanted a steak instead so I ordered the Ribeye. My partner in crime got the Farmhand burger. My steak was cooked perfectly and the burger was pretty good too. I really liked the fries it had the texture of 'fish and chip' fries. The service was good and i'll go back to try the brunch. read more

Stopped in for a quick lunch. The space is gorgeous and filled with natural light. Lots of visual interest throughout and love the high ceilings. Part of the space looks like it could be rented out for a decent sized function. I had the kale salad; it was delicious!! Only thing I would change is getting the dressing on the side as there was quite a bit. They also had a great high chair for my 10 month old so that always gets extra points in my books. Not sure about change tables in the washroom (can someone maybe clarify??) but didn't need to change my daughter so forgot to check! read more

Came to Calgary for work and stayed across the street at the Residence Inn. It was convenient to go across the street! With the cold weather you wanted something comforting and their Duck Confit flatbread & Risotto was the most amazing thing ever! I came back the very next day and ate again. Compliments to the Chef and the staff was really awesome and hospitable! read more

A great addition to the south, Starbelly has a lot of potential but isn't quite there yet. The restaurant itself is huge, the décor is modern and trendy and the menu has a good variety. We went for Sunday brunch and there was lots of room for our large group - a welcome change from smaller breakfast joints downtown. The food itself was alright, however, the service and price left something to be desired. Our waitress had long hair that was not tied back and caused us to cringe as we watched it dangle into some food. The bacon ran $6 for 2 pieces (granted it is smoked in-house) and tea was over $3. For the overall experience the final price definitely seemed high. I may revisit but will be giving them some time to work out the kinks. read more

We finally had a chance to have dinner here and chose Valentine's Day. Open concept seating area, but brightly lit as another reviewer mentioned. The décor is lovely however, the lighting from other businesses (Fatburger) was a distraction. Blinds on the windows would make a big difference. We anticipated a wait as it was a holiday, however we were seated promptly and attended to swiftly. The regular menu wasn't available, but the tasting menu on offer sounded wonderful, with 9 diverse dishes. Some of the highlights were the mussels in Mediterranean tomato butter; wood-fired charred calamari (best calamari I've had!) and bourbon honey glazed baby back ribs. The final course was a decadent, rich and chocolatey hazelnut orange chocolate bar with blood orange gelato. It.was.incredible! The price per person was reasonable at $45.00. Our server was extremely knowledgeable of the menu and attentive. His service was exceptional. We'll definitely be back! read more

Sunday Brunch-service was great but that is all. At 30 dollars each you would expect much more selection. Only eggs were Benedict, bacon, sausage, hashbrowns and macaroni and cheese. One small bit of fresh fruit and extremely rare prime rib(?) and waffles. They need to put that chef cutting the occasional piece of meat to work at an omelette bar. Very poor selection- will never return nor recommend. read more

An above average modern restaurant in a bright, stylish space. We went for brunch and everyone was happy with their orders...from flatbreads to eggs Benny to gnocchi all the dishes had a twist in the classic interpretation through the use of fresher, vegetable forward flavours and clean stylish presentation. Notably great fries. The coffee was really good too. The big advantage of being out if the way (unless you're going to the South Campus Hospital) is that you get a good hipsteresque brunch without a lineup. read more

Great ambience, great location, easy parking and friendly staff. Food is good but different.

We ate here Sunday July 15 and the chicken sandwich I ordered was only partially cooked - a portion of it was actually raw. Unfortunately I had already eaten the other half. The managers response was to not charge me for the sandwich as if I would have paid for it anyway. I understand mistakes happen but seemed like a pretty meagre response. Not someplace I will be going back to. read more

This is a fine dining restaurant in the South. I have eaten brunch and dinner here on numerous occasions and have always been more than happy with the quality of the food and service. The food and service was excellent. The restaurant is very beautiful and very accessible, right beside the deerfoot highway. I went in with my family and really enjoyed the dinner. Was here for a breakfast half a year ago and realized they have recently updated their menu so my friend and I decided to come here for dinner. The reservation was made for 8pm Saturday and it was FULL house when I arrived at 7:50pm, so it must be good? As starters, we ordered beef tartar and mussels in Mediterranean tomato butter. Beef was just minced right and definitely did not taste like ground beef. Mussels, not much meat in them although it was very fresh. For mains, my partner had ordered the clam linguini while I opted for the safe side, house burger. Both were well portioned for its price. There was not much wagyu-ness in my burger after I disassembled it, well maybe the meat was too well done to be noticed. My partner's clam linguini, on the other hand, looked fantastic. Despite the cream mixture covering the pasta, the chef was definitely not cheap as far as combination of seafood, garnished being used in his pasta. Since I had to work right after dinner, I did not get a chance to order desserts. Overall, it was a wonderful dining experience and food was excellent, despite slight wait for food despite the restaurant was full house and also had to handle a 40 people private birthday function. Although I would definitely given it a thumbs up and recommend people to taste their new menu. read more

I had an absolute awful experience while trying to plan my event in their private dining room. My event was 4 months away from when I initially made contact with the event coordinator at the time, and things were decided on that they later on failed to honor. My mother and I went into Starbelly for lunch and to meet with the events coordinator so I could explain to her what my event was all about and what I wanted to do for it. She was very nice and agreed with my plan and made it seem like it was going to be perfect. At that time, I put the deposit down and she said she would be in contact with me a month before my event so I could finalize the details. I had to send out the first email to the now new events coordinator who seemed to barely know anything about my event, she even had the completely wrong amount of people. This started to stress me out throughout our emails as my event is now less than a month away and I had sent my invitations out in the previous month!  They were less than accommodating. They said they could "absolutely not" honor what the previous event coordinator had told me. I work in the restaurant industry and have been for the last 8 years, and that was the most disappointing display of customer service I have ever experienced. There was no compromise or sympathy on their end. I even asked for the main manager/owners contact information and the events coordinator worded herself around it and didn't give it to me. Needless to say, I will not be back there nor will I ever recommended it for any occasion ever again. Which is very unfortunate since I live in the area and have quite frequented the restaurant. read more
