I have been there (their new location) twice now and I am in love! They are a professional and clean salon. Sam was my nail tech the first time I was there for an acrylic overlay-- she did a good job. I was very pleased with her work and how inexpensive it is compared to other salons in Winthrop. The second time I went I had Mai and she is AMAZING. She reshaped my nails to look more natural and was very apologetic when she had me wait 30 mins because she was running late. I honestly didn't mind because I wasn't in a hurry and she made me feel welcome and wanted. She took her time when it was finally time for me and did a perfect job. This is my new salon for as long as they'll have me!! read more

I have been coming to Star Nails since 2001 and I always have a great experience there. Mai and Michael are very talented and always do fabulous work. If you want a gorgeous manicure or pedicure, I highly recommend going to Star Nails. read more

I have been living in Winthrop for about 9 years and this is the only salon I go to. I loving getting my eyebrows done here about every 3wks and I'll treat myself to a pedi or mani every once in a while. The owner Mai actually knows me by name as well as knowing my sisters and mom. Everyone is super nice and helpful. They really take care of you while there. :) read more

I went to the salon located on Main Street next to Belle Isle. On my first trip, I wasn't that impressed, mostly because the tech was multi-tasking between me and another pedicure. It was busy, so I figured I would give them another chance. I thought, if it is busy, it must be good, right!? Not so much. My second visit I had called to make an appointment and I waited over 45 minutes while they took in walk-ins and basically ignored me. I was acknowledged when I walked in, told them I had an appointment and then was ignored. There seem to be a lot of regulars who walk right in and get taken care of immediately, which is fine, Winthrop is a small town and everyone knows each other, but from a business standpoint any client with an appointment should not be ignored!! The owner finally asked me what I was waiting for just as I was about to walk out, probably because I looked so annoyed. Once I was finally seen, it felt very rushed, with an in-and-out type attitude. The pedicure was nothing special. They didn't really clean the foot bath part well. Using the same files and buffers as other people grosses me out. The manicurist hit my finger with her hand and sighed in aggravation like I had done something - there were streaky lighter areas on my manicure, just not good. They just left me at the dryer and on to the next client. Their ATM was broken, so I had to write a check since they are a "cash only" salon - which is sketchy to me by the way. The check took over 4 weeks for them to cash. I have no idea why this place is so busy, I will never go back. The environment is very sterile and boring, too. Nothing appealing. read more

Cash only, horrible pedicure. Not only did he make me bleed, he did nothing worth 25 bucks. All the things I expect from a pedicure ( massage, exfoliate, relaxing) ..I did not get from this man. I should have stuck with Tokyo nails in the center. I will never go back, and I can walk to this location. read more

I have never witnessed such horrible customer service in my LIFE. Older woman came in asking the male owner to fix her nails and also nicely mentioned the woman who did her pedicure made her bleed....and he screamed at her and told her to get out and never return or else he'd call the police. Meanwhile, my manicurist made ME bleed! I was disgusted by the way the owner treated this woman. And on top of it, their prices are too high! Will NEVER go back. Wish I could give them 0 stars. read more

I am now a regular here and I love this place. They keep a standing appointment for me and they are so flexible. I have never left without being 100% satisfied. They do very affordable spa treatments too! Cash or Check only FYI read more

The salon so close to my house but always leave me disappointed. Service has slipped they used to be really nice. Salon looks shabby and needs a remodel. Bella is lovely but I feel they both phone it in and I guess I can't blame them, it doesn't seem really fun. The thing is I don't see them make suggestions for new nail techniques, nail art, interesting french manicure colors, stuff like that. They don't make the experience a relaxing fun/spa kind of experience where you might head with a friend on a Saturday. They make it, a "let's get this done, I have a (insert event) tonight". Serves its purposed but it's an expensive purpose but if you are in a hurry and live in the area, sure I recommend them. read more

I used to be a regular here but I had to stop going. There is a husband and wife who own the place. The wife Mai is a sweetheart and a fantastic nail tech. The husband Michael on the other hand is miserable, rude, and obnoxious. He treats the customers horribly. Most of the nail techs are nice and do a good job. The prices are cheap and the work is decent. I just couldn't stand Michael anymore. I don't come to a salon to be treated like crap. He is the most ignorant person I have ever met. And for that reason I will never go back there again. read more

I am giving the second star for the quality of the pedicure, which was very good. Unfortunately, the experience wasn't very good. My friend and I made appointments, and when we arrived I thought they were understaffed because of the snow. There was one woman who got started on me right away, then a man who was giving another woman a manicure. My friend sat there soaking her feet for twenty minutes while the man finished the manicure. Lo and behold, the woman he was giving the manicure to was actually an employee, and she proceeded to start my friend's pedicure. The professional thing to do would have been to serve the customer first, and then give the staff manis and pedis. The man then proceeded to use a plunger on the pedicure seat right next to me. A few minutes later, another customer came in and was seated at the very seat that was being plunged moments earlier. The woman working on me finished the pedicure, then spent about 5-10 minutes cleaning up while the new customer waited. All the time the man ( I assume a manager) sat there doing absolutely nothing. Again, professionalism. The right thing to do would be for the manager to step in and help with the cleaning so the customer didn't have to wait. The whole situation made me feel very uncomfortable. read more

The salon located next to Belle Isle is better than the one on crest ave for sure. It is a larger space and the more talented nail techs usually work there. The male owner is extremely rude so avoid him at all costs. Again, I suggest going to the other location. I've always been happy with the results there. read more

PLAIN AWFUL. I went for mother's day with my 6 y/o daughter. I only went there bc I got a gift certificate for mother's day which I wanted to use but im NEVER coming back. My daughter and I were getting manicure and pedicure. There was only 1 person doing pedicure and manicure for 3 other people and she asked me and my daughter to sit and wait. We waited for about 30 mins and after 15 mins of waiting 2 more people got there and were seated at the pedicure massaging chairs first which was kind of ok because they had to stay there with their feet in the water for about 40 mins before the only person was able to work on their pedicure. After a while another worker showed up and that's when my daughter and I were seated and they started to do our pedicure. They did my daughter's nails and toes like in 10 mins. She wasnt even taken to the manicure table. It was very uncomfortable for her. The worker that just got there was clearly in a rush. She cut two of my fingers with the cuticle clipper because she didn't have time to soak my nails in water first and was doing it just like that. It was really painful and bloody. Thanks God they didn't cut my little girl's fingers or they would've got in big trouble!!! The 2 workers were running around the salon all the time doing about 9 people's nails and toenails at the same time and talking on the phone. The worker that showed up after was clearly arguing on the phone with her family while CUTTING my fingers and once she was done with my manicure she just left the salon like that. I hated this place. Plus the bathroom is disgusting. I am sticking to my old nail salon and if you don't care getting your fingers cut and bloody and you like poor service then this is the place for you. read more

The only reason I gave Star Nail 1 star is because my nail tech was awesome! Everything else about the experience was terrible! The owner michael dragged my tech away in the middle of my services so that she could paint another customers nails. After 35 minutes I complained to Michael and he told me to leave! I was horrified. I've been told that this is not the first time Michael has treat his customers this way. I will NEVER go back. Do yourself a favor, if you want a relaxing service (something we all deserve), stay clear of this place. All michael cares about is moving the "cattle" read more

Mei and her team are wonderful! I have been going to them for over 7 years. They have turned what used to be claws into wonderful manicured hands and feet. I had a standing weekly appointment for a manicure that is now a standing every 3 week appointment for gel manicure, pedicure and waxing. I wouldn't go anywhere else, Mei, Calvin, Laura, Sam and the rest of the team are just great. I have also been to their new site on Main Street and it is gorgeous! Very spa like. read more

I was really excited about trying your nail salon out and especially because I live right across the street and it was sooo perfect for me. But I was not excited. I had my nails done from the girl who sits right beside the owner. I had to keep telling her that there was still extra skin that needed to be removed. she wasn't even close to be thorough. She did even asked if I wanted to cut mys nails and then when she removed the skin I then asked her if she could cut my nails down and then when she cut my nails she never even filed them down. and usually when you have them cut I usually get asked if I want then round or squared and when she painted them she did an ok job..... I really wanted to get a pedicure that day as well But I didn't have enough cash on me. thank goodness I didn't get them done. Just because its so expensive for a pedicure just in general and if she did a bad job on my manicure at least I saved myself from a pedicure from her. I was very disappointed with how my nails came out. I think her training needs to be improved. I was really hoping that my experience would be great so I could come back to your place just because I live across the street and now i have to stay where I go in Malden... :( read more

Can actually say one of the worst pedicures I've had!! Went there because someone gave me a gift certificate, but I'm actually sorry for the person who wasted their money here. My pedi was so quick & half ass done!!! Nothing was put in the water were my feet were soaking, Helen barely cut my cuticles, the nail painting was awful. Only giving it 1 star because the massage was okay, other then that I would give it 0 stars. Won't be going back even though I have $$ left in the gift certificate. read more

I love Mai for manis, pedis, and especially waxing services--I am very surprised other reviewers didn't mention this. Excellent quality and prices. Thumbs up from me. read more

Today I had the best experience I have ver had at a nail salon. I hadn't gotten my nails done in over 5 years and I wanted acrylics. I went in there sat down and the nail technician suggested getting gel paint on top of my own nails so I don't ruin my natural nails because they are long and strong. Well I did what he said and I couldn't be happier with the outcome. The place had steady customers and it was very clean in there. They have so many beautiful shades of nail polish but most importantly the are nice and have awesome customer service skills! read more

Please Don't go here!! I've been twice.. First experience was ok.. I didn't have cash but per a miracle had a check.. Which this is a cash salon but takes checks?? Ok I trusted them to cash it and the owner seemed nice..NOTHING HAPPENED ON MY ACCOUNT AND HE CHECKED TO MAKE SURE HE COULD CASH.. Fast forward to a year later.. I needed a QUICK FILL.. Yes is was a SAT AND THERE WAS ONLY TWO PEOPLE ON! So they told me 20 mins.. Why did I wait over 40 mins? They acted like they didn't see me and then when she "waived me over- she filed down my nails and cut me! I bleed and asked her to put antiseptic- which the guy(owner) - Said wouldn't adhere to acrylic? Never has that happened! She also left old nail polish all OVER my nails!! I had to ask the owner to try to finish(who already had a client). He told me five mins rudely and proceeded to take his time with his client. After waiting tweet MORE MINS, I Walked out!! DO NOT GO HERE!! They are RUDE AND ONLY CATER TO THEIR CLIENTS!! Go somewhere else!! It's obvious that The don't care about customer service or clients. Never mind keeping things sanitary !! Wish I could have warned you sooner!!! THIS IS OLD REVIEW but I just updated ON RECENT VISIT.. same experience.. STAY AWAY ... horrible at nails and even worse experience!! I'm beside myself at how they're open still.. read more

Kind of weird that this place only takes cash. Had a very awkward facial, had to wait a very long time for the facial to start. Had better facials for better price. read more

Since Winthrop has a million and one nail salon selections, please choose anywhere but here. I was drawn to this place because it's a large new salon (next to Bell Isle) but I felt that although they could seat a lot of people, I did not feel attended to. They would buff one nail, go finish up a pedicure, come back buff another one of my nails, then go do a wax. Meanwhile I watched them do all of these things without washing hands! When she was cutting my cuticles, she was so rushed she made 5 of my 10 digits bleed (something that never happens at Tokyo Hair & Nail). Days after my shellac manicure, 2 of my nails were red and inflamed. Also, the fumes in there could kill an unborn fetus, but at least the manicurists had masks on to protect themselves. To end on a high I did appreciate the complimentary parafin wax and the bootleg pitch perfect 2 playing read more

Very sloppy pedicure. Even after I told her that the nails were uneven she made no effort to make the nails beautiful. Thankfully, she did not really touch the cuticles on my feet because 4 of my fingers were bleeding from the manicure. This used to be my go-to nail place but not again. If you're looking to love the results, this may not be the place read more

Not only did I wait 1/2 hour with an appt made but in between she kept leaving to finish the other girl. Then she cut me with the cuticle cutters, left my old polish on in certain spots, and didn't understand me when I asked her to lighten up on the massage pressure three times, she just kept nodding. Parking was terrible and the dryers in the end had one side stronger than the other so I had to keep switching hands to get an even dry. read more
