Star Nails is a spacious, clean, bright, busy place! Even though we went on a Wednesday, there were several walk-in customers and many regulars for manicures and pedicures. I just had a manicure. My nail tech cut off all of the hang nails, did a brief massage up to the wrists, and made my hands look presentable. At first, I wanted a clear coat of polish, but she suggested a very light shade of pink. Okay! My friend got the works: manicure and pedicure. While we sat next to each other during our manicures, we figured out that the last time I was in New Jersey was ten years ago when her younger son graduated from high school. Moved to Sparta 8 months ago and tried a few nail salons in the area. Jessie is the nail technician that I have been going to at Star for several months and she does give a good manicure gel fill in. That said the rest of the experience at this salon is unlike anything I have seen in all my 40 something years of getting manicures. First, I was a loyal customer to my nail salon for over 20 years when I lived in NY so I'm really not that tough to please. A pleasant greeting, reasonable service & prices-you have me forever. The vibe in the salon is just not warm, the staff barely acknowledges customers and seem tense with each other. There seems to be a hierarchy amongst the technicians that is defined by ethnicity and I witnessed a few encounters that were uncomfortable to watch. Additionally, the salon has a policy to upcharge significantly if you prefer to have more than 2 weeks between manicures. I travel significantly for work and often find myself at the 3 week interval. After 2 weeks they charge $60 at 3 weeks they charge $70! This is for a gel fill in manicure with zero extras. No shoulder massage, paraffin treatment etc. I felt the manicure quality was good and like Jessie so I accepted the price gouge and the cold environment...until today. I had to change my appointment from Monday to Wednesday this week which put me at 3 weeks and 2 days for my manicure. When I was checking out they charged me $80!!! When I questioned it and told them I thought it would be $70 the owner/first chair said to me that it's been almost 4 weeks. 3 weeks and 2 days and no posting that over 3 weeks is $80. I told her the exact dates I was in last which was 7/8 and today is 7/31. She charged me $75 instead of the $70 that I was ready and willing to pay. I will add that I also went in yesterday afternoon and paid for 2 pedicures for my daughter and I. The absolute short sightedness of overcharging a customer for $5 and losing them forever sent a clear message to me. They do not care at all about providing a pleasant experience, clearly communicating their policy or about retaining valuable repeat business. My husband and I own a service oriented business which he runs and we would never treat a customer that way. Of course there are policies in place, but this was not even a posted policy. I wish Jessie well and hope she finds herself in a better salon soon as she is gifted and kind, but I will never set foot in this awful salon again. Shame on their greediness and inability to value the customer. Btw I have never written a negative review for a business ever before. Shaking my head at this experience. read more

I walked in expecting to get french tip gel acrylics. First the lady had cut my skin and made me bleed. Then i finally got the nails done, but they all fell off within a day. Not even a week after a gel fill in my nails are cracking. Asked for stiletto nails, these are way CLEARLY round. Tech didn't even bother looking on the underside of the nail. UPDATE: I called the owner to complain and she told me what do you want me to do. Wow!!! I had a full gel set put on my nails and I asked Kay to soak my nails to remove all the gel after a few fill-ins. Several times I asked her not to make them so thick...it's tacky - she refused to soak my nails and my filed them until it burned. Then she started to add that thick pink gel again to my nails and I told her this isn't what I asked for. She gave me attitude and painted my nails leaving polish all over my fingers. Didn't cut my cuticles like I asked for. She's lucky she got a tip...don't know why I tipped her. I DO NOT recommend. This isn't the first time that they don't listen. Well... this whole experience was underwhelming. Made appointments however still had to wait due to lack of staff. Pedicure cost more than other local places and offered less services (massage, hot stone, exfoliation, hot towels, none of which were included) and was super fast, and not relaxing. Secondly, asked for new dip manicure, (fresh tips with DIP, put on two weeks ago at another salon) and they went to remove old DIP, and ruined my recently put on set, to which they said they then had to take off as they had no other choice. I was disappointed and they said there was no other option. I asked how much it would be to put on tips again, because I liked the length they were, to which they responded $100!!!! DIP manicure45$ however DIP with fresh tips was 100$, a seemingly large jump. During my manicure I had 4 different technicians completing my nails, and they filed them until they were paper thin. I told them that to which they continued to file. Additionally they continued to ask if I wanted gel nails compared to DIP powder, and convinced my sister to do gel instead of DIP, when she really want to try it! When I pushed to have the DIP, they again changed my nail technician, unsure if they all can complete the DIP powder nails or what the problem was. After They had already removed and soaked my nails a different lady came over and said that it would be an additional $10 charge to soak off my old tips and polish even though it was their fault that they had to be removed, and I was still paying for a dip manicure. My friend and I go to this nail salon every 2 weeks for gel fills and have had nothing but great experiences! Judy and Sophie are the best! I've never had issues getting an appointment and have never waited longer than 5-10 minutes if they're backed up. Definitely give a try before you judge based on some bad reviews here. Sooo, i stopped getting my nails regularly done because no time. So i had a little bit of time and an event . So i figured this place has been around for a while. Smh.. i walked in with a picture. I said this is what i want. Nope! This is what i got. Thankfully i dont get my nails done regularly anymore because to be charged full price after showing a picture and stating that i needed them curved cause my nails go up. I've been going to Star Nails for years and have always liked it. It's very clean and professional. However, my last 3-4 visits have left something to be desired. Today I called at 4:30 and asked if I could come in at 5. The person asked if I could come at 5:30. I said yes. I arrived at 5:30 but it wasn't until 6:08 that someone began my manicure. Why do we have to make an appointment if they're not going to honor it? Although it was a Tuesday evening, they were full. I believe the girl who did my manicure was Gloria. She apologized for the wait and asked how I was, not even realizing I didn't answer. Then she proceeded to give me the speediest manicure ever. Not sure why as I didn't see anyone waiting. Within ten minutes I was paying. Hand massage lasted about 3 seconds on each hand. Never soaked my nails. It was like she was in a competition. I hadn't planned to take out my anger on her for the wait but the way she raced through the manicure made me decide to leave her a smaller tip. Once I use up the points in my card, I am not going back there again. I think I will stick to American salons where they realize that the pampering aspect is a part of the whole manicure experience. read more

I've never written a review online ever before in my life but i had to write this one. I got my nails done (regular gel) once before at this place and it lasted me a week before it started peeling and chipping (not great, but not awful). I went back yesterday and got the same gel manicure, but this time it's already peeled entirely off one finger and lifted and peeled near the cuticle on 3 others because the polish was all over the sides of my fingernails on the skin (makes the polish lift because it can't cure right). This whack job of a manicure cost me $35 plus a tip because i'm not rude like that... but i'm not impressed... it was expensive. When I left the place and immediately noticed that some fingers' gel was bubbling on the sides. I added photos but might be hard to tell because the color is so light. don't hate the place or anything, just mad about this situation... everyone's really nice at the salon though so i give it 2 stars. They also filed my nails so far down it kind of killed my vibe... not to mention the polish is globbed on my thumb (pictured) yet so thin on other nails? ugh i hate that i posted a negative review but it be like that. read more

Second time here. Both times I left unhappy. First time I had tips put on and they were so thick they looked ridiculous. Plus the polish wasn't neat. I also asked for them to be cut shorter before the polish was applied but they told me "next time". I gave them a second chance and tried a pedicure. It wasn't very relaxing it felt more like a transaction. The polish was messy and there was a lot of correction after the fact to try to make edges and cuticles neat. They put three coats on to try and make polish even and it's going to take forever to dry. The file they used was dirty and they didn't get the tools from a sealed bag or from the toaster-looking machine, they were just laying out on the table. I didn't feel great about that. I'm sure there are nail techs here that do a good job but I think you should find out who they are and ask for them by name. I don't think this is the kind of place where everyone is good. My daughter also had tips put out and they'd did ok with that except they didn't wash off the powder or moosturize. He skin was dry and chewed up on the sides from the Dremel tool. read more

Having tried other salons in the area, I have found Star Nails to be the best. This is a large and busy salon, which speaks for itself. I have acrylic nails and have fills every two weeks, as well as monthly pedicures. I am very satisfied with the professionalism of everyone here. I always have an appointment, and sometimes might have to wait a few minutes, but that is to be expected. Leah usually does my nails, and she is extremely good. Had been going there for over a year. Participated in their rewards program and then on my last visit they did not not have my name in the system or my rewards. They admitted they changed out POS systems but would not give me back my rewards points even though I showed them each time I came into the salon and paid via my debit card. Every transaction was recorded at my bank. The salon said they don't have to give me back my rewards points because it is a gift from them. Bottom line, rewards points are earned based on client's loyalty and continued business. They are unethical, liars and cheats. I will spend my money else where. read more

oh my goodness where do i even begin, my nail tech made me cry because she was making rude snarky comments saying my fingers were too fat, i have nails that were too short. Therefore i asked for long nails and she gave me short nails. i asked for square nails she gave me coffin. i paid extra for the shape and the length. but i have done long nails every time i had gotten my nails done. she also cut my ring finger on my left hand which got infected from them not cleaning there tools. i would never go back to this place even you paid me to go. read more

I haven't really found a go-to nail place yet but this might be the one. all the staff there were super friendly to me which I really loved. the pedicure chairs in particular were super comfortable, probably the most comfortable chairs i've been on. I got a gel manicure and regular pedicure and they definitely did an outstanding job. definitely recommending this place to my other friends and i'll be back soon once my next vacation is booked!! read more

1st time visit. My daughter had made an appointment for the two of us. We had to wait since they were extremely busy. I sat for a pedi. My daughter's water was burning hot and mine was freezing cold. We asked the manAgee to adjust the temperature. I felt rushed and very little time was taken for me. Once done we moved to the mani chairs. Waited 1/2 hr. The lady who took care of me went off to take care of another pedi, only to come back to me to do my mani. At this point , my feet were freezing. She started my mani but again very rushed. If I could give this place a negative star, I would. I went there a couple of times and they were ok. On my third visit, a manicurist was assigned to me, and she began working on my nails on time (I had an appointment). However, two minutes later she spotted another woman entering the shop and left me to work on that woman's nails. I sat patiently thinking she would soon return. I waited for thirty minutes before going to the owner and asking what was going on. He abruptly and angrily told me she would get to me when she was finished. I waited seven more minutes before she returned. She was rude and worked on my nails for one minute when the part owner, a woman manicurist spoke to her in a language I do not understand. The owner took over and started on my hands. She was very rude, rough, and clearly angry at me as she did so. In the end she DID NOT give me a manicure but a mere polish change. Nevertheless, I was charged full price. Clearly these people do not know how to run a business. If they simply said from the get go that they had over-booked and asked me if I could wait, I would have been fine with that. They were clearly annoyed that I dared to say anything.
