Great service at this tiny bit mighty nail salon. I'm new to the Burgh from DC and used to just walking into a salon for a pedicure - no appointment. Rude awakening for me a few weeks ago when I tried this at another Squirrel Hill establishment. But - when I called this salon, the super nice woman who answered told me to come right in. Turns out she is the owner with her husband - and they both really work their tails off! She did me and 2 other women inside of an hour, and my pedicure was quite good! She gives a mean massage, too, and really pays attention to detail when she's painting. The shop is below ground off Forbes - well marked - and very clean. I'll definitely be a regular. I had a bad experience with Nancy when she *attempted* coffin shaped nails. She did horrible but I was too tired to complain plus I was leaving for vaca the next day. For my next nail appointment I went to a new shop to avoid another issue. Yesterday I called and said I would like an appointment with Rick. She said to come in one hour. I get there and kindly say "I have an APPOINTMENT with RICK". They tell me to sit down. I sit at ricks chair and they tell me to move. Rick says he has to leave but the girls will take care of me. Thankfully Kelly did my nails. I would have walked out if i was given Nancy. I have been to many nail salons. If you request someone and make an appointment, your request is granted. This is for alllllll nail salons I've been to in my 25 years! If Rick wasn't available, Nancy should have explained that on the phone. It's not fair that you are putting money in their pocket yet can't request which nail technician you want. That is terrible customer service I've been going here faithfully. I have raved about them on Facebook and many friends also come here due to my recommendation. It's upsetting that you can't choose who does your nails. I will give them one more try and make another request. If it isn't granted then I will have to move on to a new salon. read more

I had a great first experience here about one month ago. I was a walk in and serviced after maybe a 10-15 minute wait. The shop was clean and the staff was friendly. I received a gel mani which costs $25. They do not charge extra for removing gel, which was great. They had a decent selection of colors, although I would have liked to have seen more colors that are neutral to my skin tone. I was satisfied with the service and would return. After two weeks, a few nails began to break/crack at the skin, if that makes sense. I did not have acrylic applied, just gel. I don't know if they became too long for me to manage or what. Checking out the reviews on here, I'd thought I'd give this place a try. I'm originally from the Detroit area and in my 4 years living here, this place comes closest to there. They are very hard workers and I'm very impressed. They do not just get you in and out, halfway done. When I get a pedicure, I usually need it. They scrub and soak your feet to your needs and recommend what you should get. The prices are very reasonable and worth it. I also called 30 mins before and they encouraged me to come and they'd fit me in. Give this place a try. You can tell that they're a nice hardworking family and appreciate your business. read more

You're encouraged to call ahead and make an appointment to minimize wait time. I did just that! Called yesterday for a pedicure, advised I'd be there in 10mins and was told that would be fine. Arrive, a worker asks if I had called. I replied yes I did, for a pedicure about 10mins ago. The worker then says "oh I thought you called for nails, I can't take you, I have a customer on her way." So I'm confused, am I not considered a customer? Because I also called and made an appointment. No ma'am will not be back ever again. Review is based solely on customer services, seeing as though I never actually received any service. I guess they had to keep the seat warm and empty for the customer 'on her way' smh. read more

The employees including the owners Ricky and Nancy ARE talking about you in Vietnamese! It makes me so sad to write this review but I feel compelled to warn anyone else who could potentially be going to this salon. I went to this salon for a while and unfortunately I found out the were FAT SHAMING me and other clients while we were in the salon paying for services. It's hard to even write this but I can't in good conscience allow anyone else to walk into the salon and potentially be put through the same thing we were put through. Myself and several friends have been utilizing the salon for a few months sometimes we would come in together and sometimes alone. I always thought that Ricky was very nice and jovial. I have to admit that I did not use Nancy in the salon because I thought that she didn't do a good job with nails. I always felt rushed whenever she painted my nails. I always felt that Ricky was entertaining and kind. So I would call ahead and make an appointment with him. At my last visit to the salon my friend who happens to be 100% Vietnamese joined me she came Into the salon about 30 minutes after I did because she also had an appointment with Ricky. And we figured it would be easy for Ricky to complete my pedicure within 30 minutes after at my 10 a.m. appointment and then start her services. So I want to be clear in saying that my friend who again is 100% Vietnamese American born to two Vietnamese immigrants. She is typically portrayed or viewed rather as mixed Asian or possibly even Polynesian. And a lot of times when we go to nail salons they ask her if she is Vietnamese. However at Star Nails they never ask. We can only assume that they assumed she did not speak Vietnamese. After she and I left the salon she told me when we were back at my house, that she had to tell me something because it was weighing heavily on her mind. She told me that Ricky, Nancy and the new employee whose name I do not know were talking about us in Vietnamese. She told me that when she walked in they said "the other fat girl is here". Ricky then went on to refer to our legs as being "larger than his body". And they referred to our calf's as being ham hocks in water. I thought about going back in and confronting them. I have sat with us for several weeks because I didn't know how to handle it and it was very upsetting to me as I'm sure some of you could imagine. I have decided that this is my best way to reconcile my feelings about the situation. Oh and just put this out there if you are not a person of size they are still talking about you, they also were talking about another woman in the salon who apparently had calluses on her feet and they were joking that they would need to go down to Lowe's in the waterfront to pick up a drill to remove the skin on her feet. So no one is safe they are talking about you behind your back in another language. I feel that this behavior is vile. I have spent my entire life in customer service, I grew up with my father owning a dry cleaning store I understand that being kind to customers is the only way to build business. We would never treat our customers this way, this is not even the way to treat someone behind closed doors after they're gone. But to think about these people are actually shaming us because of the way that we look while we were in the salon and paying for their services is very sad. I also find this sad because I have referred so many people to the salon because I thought they were so nice unfortunately they were sheeps in wolves clothing. DO NOT PATRONIZE THIS SALON unless you don't care about people talking about you because they will find something to say about you no matter what you look like. read more

I was NOT a fan of this place. I made an appointment for 3pm for a fill in plus a mani/pedi for my friend. Neither one of us were seen until 3:30 and only one other customer was in the building. They kept stopping during our nails to do other things (take care of other people, my nail tech even stopped to wax someone.. like what??) I also showed a picture to my nail tech and she didn't even do anything remotely close. It's been 2 days and half my nails have chipped. I will not be back. ever. Went in for a gel mani and regular pedi with an appt. It's free 2 hour street parking so that was easy. I was taken right away for Nancy to do my nails. She did a great job and I didn't feel rushed at all. I then saw Rick for my pedi. He was a really nice guy and explained everything clearly. They have a huge color selection and prices were great. This place absolutely blew my mind! Some girls came in late for their appointment that were before us, and instead of asking us to reschedule, they promised to stay open until we had ours done! They stayed open 2 hours past their closing time and gave us free water and chocolate while we waited! Our nails turned out beautiful! We usually go to another place that's nearby and although they are good too, it seems the busier / more popular they get, the less time they spend on your feet. Worst salon and worst customer service ever on many occasions. This last time I came in was the icing on the cake. I asked for pedicure I was told as soon as they finish the two people in the chair it would be my turn. I waited 15min and then they changed their tune when another two customers came in they started telling me to come back tomorrow because they have two pedicure appts now. This all after they said they could take me and had me wait 15min with my pant legs rolled up waiting for them to finish the two pedicures they were doing when I walked in, just to tell me to come back. I am so glad I found this place! I have been going here for a few months now and will continue to do so. They do quality fills at a good price. I get regular acrylic but I know they also do shellack (sp?). The staff is kind and accommodating. The space is new, soothing and clean. I treat myself to their pedicure- they wrap your calves with a warm towel and it feels wonderful. They do walk-ins. (But I would recommend calling ahead for an appointment, only because it can get busy at certain times.) They have free off-street parking in a lot behing their building. They have Sunday hours. This is a new salon near the place I was staying. When I asked I was told they have been open for three weeks. Prior to this, I had stopped in to many salons and asked about price and looked around. Some had prices I thought were way to much and one in particular must not have had any ventillation, because the chemicals knocked me over. This salon charged me 27.00 for removal of my shellac and manicure with shellac. The metal instruments were packaged in sterile wrapping. They were very nice, did not rush, and did a good job. It would be nice if they would do more of a hand massage and offer something to drink. They do take Visa, but prefer cash. You should check them out! read more

Dishonest owner. I do not plan to return to this business. I believe the place is owned by a couple, and the husband was the one I'm speaking about in this case. Before this incident, I had gone to Star Nail several times and they did a good job. In September of 2017 (I don't remember the actual date), I called to make an appointment. I told him I wanted a pedicure and gel manicure and he said okay. I came in for my appointment and confirmed again that I wanted a gel manicure and a pedicure and wrote it on their sign-in sheet. One of their sons did my pedicure and after I waited for about 15 minutes, it was my turn for my manicure. Only then did the male owner say that only his wife can do gel manicures, he couldn't do them, and that she was out of town so I would have to settle for a regular manicure. I heard a walk-in guest ask for a gel manicure and the owner said they were busy right now, but she could come back later in the day. The fact that the owner is willing to lie directly to people's faces just to make money makes him a terrible business owner. I paid for my pedicure and left the establishment and do not plan to return. I went to S&T Nail Design in the Oakland neighborhood for my gel manicure, and they did a fabulous job. Would definitely recommend S&T Nail Design over Star Nail and their dishonest business practices. read more

I went to New York Nail down the street for many years. Last October I was in a hurry so I stopped here for a pedicure and I haven't gone anywhere else since. Rick and Nancy (owners) are the MOST friendly people and do a great job at taking their time and making you feel at home. They do really good shellac and have the BEST pedicure I have ever had.
