For our first drink, we are having the y Lychee Martini made with Stateside vodka (yeah, no, Grey Goose please!), Bella Sprizz Elderflower Liqueur and fresh lychee. This is well garnished, chilled nice and tastes just perfect. These lychees are huge! I love this drink! For our appetizers, we are having the steamed vegetable dumplings, cucumber salad, fried pork strips and the Han Hot and Spicy Chicken Wings. Those spicy cucumbers are good! Those red peppers are spicy! I am doing the Share Two Flavor Classical Pot with two broths. This has been my favorite hotpot restaurant for almost 10 years, ever since that faithful day in…read more2017 when my review of Han won Yelp's Review of the day. Over the years, I came here many times, often with a group & I have introduced Hot pot to many of my American colleagues. The boss was here most of time & the hot pot was consistently amazing, never a miss. Unfortunately, all good things eventually come to an end. My recent visit made me realize that Han hot pot was not what it used to be. There were three strikes in my last visit. When I went in, I realized that the boss was no longer around, replaced by a "manager". It wasn't a good sign as this is the same boss of the restaurant "Song", when he stopped managing Song directly, the food good quality went down hill fast. The first strike was the order. I ordered several mushrooms for my hotpot, the waiter suggested just go with "mushrooms platter", so I said ok. It turns out, none of the mushrooms showed up, he forgot the mushroom platter that he himself suggested. Ok mistakes happen, let's just focus on the food. The second strike was that the lamb slices were nowhere as good as before. They were cut way too thick. This completely changed hot pot cook timing, texture & flavor. This is a big fail at foundational level for Chinese hotpot. I am from Beijing, the capital of hotpot, serving thick slices for hotpot is just unthinkable. The third strike, something was a miss in the sauce department. I always mix my own Beijing hotpot sauce mix, which is based on Sesame paste, leek flower, fermented tofu & a few other things, it had never tasted sweet until now. This is no good, did somebody add sugar to sesame paste? Or one of the other ingredients? Regardless, the mix tasted off & it ruins the experience. I mixed another dish & the same, tasted too sweet, someone is adding sugar where it doesn't belong. All of the fail compounded by raising the price to $33, it'd be hard to justify coming back here for lunch going forward. Fair well my Han hot pot. Note: Yelp is messed up. I did an update & Yelp failed to keep my original review which I gave 5 stars & won Yelp of the day (YOTD). So the entire 2017 review & YOTD record is now gone. However, strangely, Yelp kept my old photos. These photos are from 9 years ago, they do look better than the food being served today!
