These guys saved me in a pinch just a few hours before every shop in town shut down for the Christmas holiday. I was traveling down I-5 when my instrument cluster went haywire and my check engine light came on. After that my engine was running super rough and I coasted into Star Automotive to see what the heck happened. After some tests they figured out the problem (cylinder specific ignition coil failure on Chevy Silverado) and worked fast to get parts picked up and installed before they closed up shop that night. If it wasn't for them I would have spent Christmas alone in a hotel room in Grants Pass, OR. Thanks to these guys I made it 500 miles to my destination and spent Christmas with my family instead. They were friendly, did their best to get my job done up against the clock, and charged fair labor rates. It is truly unfortunate that after 3 cars, and 19 years of great service while Star was under previous ownership I am now writing this 1 Star review. I had triple A tow my car to Star on 10/27/25. I gave them a call in advance and let them know I would be sending it there and stated what had happened. For full context, I was exiting the free way in central point there was a small box in the middle of the road and I had not choice but to slow down and go over it. My car being an Alfa Romeo Giulia sits low and something was pulled out of the bottom of my car and it immediately lost all power steering. I was able to pull to the side at the very end of the ramp. No body damage at all, car was still drivable but no power steering. The tow truck drivers were able to drive it into the flatbed themselves. Zach from Star automotive s initial quote 10/27/25 totaled $10,054.53. See pic and note Quote 1. (This quote will dramatically change once insurance adjuster is involved) 4 quotes later, 2 subcontracted dealerships, a broken fuel module that made my car completely underivable, and no answers from Zach or Austin about what happened. The insurance claims adjuster, the service manager in Portland and the technicians all agree in writing that my car was not drivable when it was brought in and that someone clearly damaged the fuel module brought the car in with zero fuel, and then tried to cover it up ...the technician stated "it was hanging off when I saw it". Zach blamed this entire incident on a recall. Once again in writing the alfa Romeo dealership states this was not possible. I did not accuse Zach or Star right away when I was presented with all the evidence and facts...I called Zach and sent him the email from the service manager who he spoke with and checked my car in with. I simply wanted an answer, and a solution to this issue. It's Friday 4:47pm 2/27/26 my car is 246 miles away one way. The additional cost is $1113.31. I just wanted my car back. When I went down to Star after my phone call with Zach to simply discuss this in person...they said Paul is on vacation and that there was nothing they could do for me. I said I wanted to believe Zach wouldn't take advantage of me knowing how hard things were already finically ....Austin and Zach made many excuses that were not only unreasonable and impractical explanations for this incident but Austin then proceeded to yell at me and threatened to call the police on me. To the owner Paul...I know you are not aware of any of this, and from one business owner to another I am truly sorry this is what your employees are doing behind your back representing your business. I could have chosen a statefarm preferred shop, but due to my past experiences with Star, Dave specifically when he was there I chose your shop. Paul please contact me regarding this matter. I do have more documents and a video of my encounter with Zach and Austin this evening if you'd like to see to give you a full perspective. I will not upload all the documents, videos I have at the moment I will leave a thorough review in full after this claim has been closed out. I brought my 2003 Jaguar XK8 to Star Automotive on 2-23-2024. When I set the appointment, the service I requested was to have all of the transmission fluid replaced throughout the transmission, torque converter, transmission cooler and lines. I was assured they had the proper equipment to do so. Since they had the car all day I thought the service had been completed, however when I looked over the invoice there was not enough fluid to have done the complete job. It turns out that they only drained the fluid from the pan, replaced the pan/filter and refilled 5.5 quarts of a 10-11 quart capacity system and charged me $540.13. I called to speak with a shop manager or service manager and was told that he was busy and they would have him call me back. When I received the call from Paul (one of the owners) He began by telling me he had already spoken with all those involved. It was clear that he had done so to be able to defend his policies and point blame at me for signing the work order for "Auto Trans Drain & Fill" rather than be interested in giving actual customer service. I could have performed the service that Star Automotive did myself for $150 and it would have taken approx. 1 hr. I am completely dissatisfied with Star automotive and will not ever bring a vehicle to them again. Justification is a poor substitute for Integrity! read more

I thought this place was going to be good, but was mistaken. Turns out they can't fix the problem with my truck. Just ended up replacing parts and the same problem still exists. Unsafe to drive it as it just dies going down the road. Paid a lot of money just to hear.. Sorry don't know what else to do. Just going to have to wait until it dies completely or dies more often. . Told them I didn't agree with the last part they replaced, and was told well that was the only thing left to replace. Everything else is new. So just send a woman out in a vehicle that is unsafe to drive.. Never knowing when it's just going to shut off in traffic.. Makes perfect sense to me. The oil supply to my turbo blew up and my turbo seized. Just getting to the turbo is an involved process, but STAR got the work done, and even threw on a cold air intake at my request, all in a timely manner. Hands down, I can't be more honest when talking about Star Automotive! Saying that this is the greatest auto mechanic shop in all of Oregon would be AN ABSOLUTE UNDERSTATEMENT! They are the MOST Fair, honest and truly incredible mechanics I've ever met on the west coast. As a man that has no time to learn or work on his vehicles it means the world to me to have such honest men take me through exactly what's wrong every time! I've never felt hustled and I've caught Lithia hustling me and my gal numerous times, but when I come here they tell me how we can piece it out how we can take the right steps to fix the things needed first, the actual time frames I have as the owner per my budget and THAT MEANS THE WORLD TO us Americans to bay are struggling to get by! For to many years this place has been slept on by the world. I've had Lithia right up the road try to bad mouth them because I wouldn't go through Lithia.... EVERY-TIME! Star Automotive needs a crash course in customer service and communications with customers. Here is the story. My mother brings in her Mercedes SL to be serviced, both Star Auto, my mother and myself agree her old Mercedes is leaking oil. Dave a employee at Star Auto says the car is leaking oil after after my mother payed over $500 for a transmission oil service and to diagnosis the oil leak. The only answer my mother gets from Dave is "just check the oil once in awhile". Then brushes her off. No direct answer such as "The rear main seal is leaking" Okay, Star Auto this the last time you see any car from our family again. Including our old Mercedes due your unprofessional attitude and lack of communication. read more

I took my truck in to have the steering worked on. They fixed the steering but the next day the front differential seal was leaking. I took it back to them and after 7 hours I get a call telling me they couldn't fix it because they didn't have the tool needed. I was upset. They said they checked the seal when they were doing the steering. There is NO way to check the seal unless they took the wheel assembly off and pulled the differential cover off. The mechanics here are not very bright. I am a backyard mechanic and replaced the seal on the other side. I will not recommend Star Automotive to anyone. read more

I recently took the Tundra in for general servicing. I actually got 3 quotes, one which included Toyota. Toyota was most competitive to Star but still $300 more expensive. I arrange an appointment, got a free ride back to the house by Star, and was kept informed. Parts sometimes break and I appreciate Star letting me know. He has been gone for 25 years now, I figured if they could stay in business for so many years they must be doing something right, and yes they are. I have brought my car there twice now for different issues both times my bill has been lower than what I was quoted. They were honest, super friendly, thorough, and they didn't treat me like a "dumb girl". When I asked questions they answered them so I could understand without talking down to me. They made me aware of all of the issues with my car but didn't put on the pressure for me to buy extra services or repairs. I had a first & last encounter with star automotive. My daughters car had over heated going into Grants Pass on Sunday. There wasn't any place to get it looked at so she had to wait till Monday to get it fixed. She took it to star As we are both unfamiliar with businesses there. She left it there all day Monday when we went.back to get it at 5:15 that night They hadn't put one bolt in it said they had put it under pressure & run it quite a bit said it had n't Heated up at all but they. had put the radiator cap on tight used a couple Technical terms. And charged her $60.00. My car broke down on the drive from Seattle, WA to Oakland, CA. My car got towed to Grants Pass and the people at Star Automotive did their best to get it fixed by the end of the day, even ordering the part I needed before I got there. I didn't make it quite in time, but Ed and his wife helped me to find a hotel including offering to drop me off at one anywhere in town if that was an issue, recommended countless restaurants in the area, gave me a little tour around town, and dropped me off at my hotel, even offering to pick me up the next morning. They replaced my alternator by the next morning and only charged me for the price by the book even though it took longer to actually replace it. I'm used to being treated like a clueless girl in regards to cars, but that wasn't the case here. If I were to ever have another car malfunction in the area, I would definitely be back as these guys are incredibly nice, helpful, and do excellent work! read more

I have gone to star a few times and at first they did a good job at reasonable rates. But I got my early Christmas present when I went into start to ask them to check out a transmission slip. It had been doing it for quite awhile. I left my truck and they called me and said that they couldn't duplicate the problem but felt I needed new sparkplugs and a transmission service. Their quote was $700. I thought that was crazy . $500+ to change out 8 spark plugs. I called the dealer and they charged the same thing. I was then upsold on the spark plug itself and paid $12 more per plug. It was a must they said. They said there are problems with plugs breaking but they had a "special tool" to take them out where as other auto service places did not. I called the dealership and they said sometimes they can break and if they did it would be another half hour labor to get the broken plug out. So I trusted star to do this job and boy was that a mistake. It seems nowadays when you take a vehicle to an auto shop to get fixed if they have trouble fixing it or do more damage it is up to you to pay for their inability to do the job right. Sounds like a situation where plugs can get broken on purpose. Anyway I told them this amount of money was going to take what I had but they felt it needed this service and my wife believed them and said to go ahead. We needed the truck in good running condition. They charged me $50 to test drive the truck and I asked them if they would drop that from the price of the job. One guy was nice and said that many shops do that but they do not, but a person named ken popped up and proceeded to rudely tell me that they would be out of business if they did that , wow I guess they are in shaky financial shape. When I called at the end of the day to pick up my truck they said they had broken a plug and had to keep it another day. The next day they called and said to pick up the truck. I asked them how much were they going to charge me and they said they had broken a second plug and my Bill was now well over a thousand dollars. $200 for the transmission service and over $800 to change out 8 spark plugs. That is $100 per plug. I said that was crazy and I don't think I will come to star for service anymore. That is my total conversation. When I went to pick up my truck I paid the bill reluctantly and asked them why it took 4 hours to take out 2 broken plugs if they had the special tool. They apparently do not like to be questioned about their work. I then said when I spoke to the dealership they had told me it would take a half hour per plug if it broke not 2 hours per plug. Ken basically called me a liar. I then said I want to be taken out of their system and no more mailings and Ken said he had already done that and he wouldn't let me come back to the shop if I wanted to. wow....all that for questioning their prices...what a sorry place star has become. I guess the owner lets this guy say and do what ever he wants. I also never received anything showing the type of sparkplug they put in only the bill for them. So I still don't know if they put the 2 piece plugs in there or not nor would they show or offer me my old parts. I feel any work done there with the current management is suspect and you are taking a major chance on what you will end up paying. Even though they know I am a disabled Veteran and social security disable person on a very limited income they did not feel it was necessary to let me know about the extra $300 before I picked it up. I would give this rating a zero star rating if I could. Well Merry Christmas to me.well now that the owner has addressed the issue you will see that he say a thing about how I was treated and the rudeness I received. I guess that was ok. Wow! Star Auto saved me $904.71! I had taken my newly purchased used (2002) Pleasure-Way RV van to another shop in town to have the engine checked out resulting in recommendations for 6 repairs estimated at $1,755.38. (Replace evap leak detection pump, radiator replacement, thermostat replacement, belt, tensioner and idler pulley replacement, rear differential service, transmission cooler line replacement.) The estimate for the radiator replacement seemed too high to me so on gut instinct, I took the estimate to Star Auto and Ed took time away from his other work to take a look at it. Now, I was not a Star Auto customer, just some person coming off the streets with a four page estimate in her hands! Never-the-less, Ed looked it over and came up with a radiator repair estimate at about $350 less than the other shop's. So, I arranged for Star Auto to make all the needed repairs. And, guess what, according to Star Auto, several of the suggested repairs in the other shop's estimate were not needed! I am very grateful to Star Auto for saving me money but even more than that, for being trustworthy. Thank you. read more

I've been going here for three years now and they just took advantage of me and I will never go back there again. I went in last summer for a squeaking sound and they fixed it no problem, and told me to come back whenever and get it fixed for nothing, due to it only being a bolt tightening. However this time I went in and on top of my other charges they added $51 to fix the squeaking noise again when before it was free. They didn't stand by their word and from my experience they lied to me and basically said that they didn't believe me. After giving them thousands of dollars, they still tried to get more money out of me for a job they have done for me in the past for free. I would highly recommend not going here. read more
