Charges by the job, not by the hour. The job was quickly done with no complications. Honest and fair.

It's Wednesday July 3rd, and you're on your inaugural trip to Crater Lake NP, driving 270 miles…read morefrom Portland to Medford for the long July 4th weekend. Your wife is in the truck with you, you're towing your camper, and your daughter has taken a break from her Pacific Crest Trail hike to join you for the weekend. Then the fuel pump in your 94 Chevy pickup decides to crap out on you, with 230 miles left to go to Medford. The situation is looking grim, but somehow you nurse the truck through the mountain passes all the way to Medford, as your wife tries to find a rental vehicle to replace your dying truck for the weekend. You barely limp into Medford, set up camp in the Winco parking lot, and finalize the details of the Uhaul box truck you're picking up the next morning to continue your Crater Lake adventure. Next morning, you barely manage to coax your truck the 2 miles from Winco to Uhaul, and park across the street. You pick up your box truck, head back to "Lake Winco," hook up your camper, and resume your adventure. But you've still got a dead truck to deal with, parked on a public street near the Uhaul... So you start searching the web for a mechanic to diagnose and repair your truck. You choose Ken Scales Automotive because they have good Yelp reviews and seem like qualified, experienced mechanics. I'm telling you, you have made the right choice. Why? Because: 1) Ken Scales is open on Friday July 5th, so they can take your calls; 2) Ben, the unsuspecting mechanic who is assigned to fix your truck, has a heart of gold, and agrees to GO TO UHAUL, FIND YOUR SPARE KEYS HIDDEN IN THE TRUCK, AND NURSE THE DAMN THING BACK TO THE SHOP FOR DIAGNOSIS AND REPAIR, while you're busy adventuring around Crater Lake, in and out of cell service. 3) The shop leaves messages for you on your phone describing the fuel pump failure and estimated cost of repair, so you can decide what to do; and, 4) When you approve the repairs, Ken Scales Automotive gets the necessary parts and completes the repairs by Monday July 8th at 11 a.m., so you can use your truck to get yourself and your camper safely back to Portlandia. Bottom line: if you're looking for experienced, highly skilled mechanics with an outstanding customer service ethic, you can't do better than Ken Scales Automotive in Medford. They salvaged our Crater Lake weekend and got my truck humming again so I could get home safely. Sincere thanks to Ken Scales, especially Ben and shop manager Mike, maestro of customer communications. You guys pulled my butt out of the fire and made it possible for us to thoroughly enjoy our first-ever visit to Crater Lake. We'll be back, and I know exactly who to call if I have any mechanical problems.

I've been taking both my cars to Ken Scales for the past 12 years, but since Ken retired and his…read moreson Jeff stepped back from the business things have gone downhill, which is usually what happens when there's no owner presence on-site. When I took my Subaru in for an oil change, the tech didn't tighten the oil cap which popped off and blew oil all over my engine. Then, two weeks ago my Corvette wouldn't start, made a loud noise when I pushed the start button. AAA was not able to start it. Had to call a flat bed. Ken Scales did nothing for 2 days. On the third day they called and said the battery was dead. I told them I suspected something else was wrong because a dead battery makes no sound at all when you push the start button. I asked them to check everything having to do with starting the car that might have caused that noise. When they called to say they replaced the battery, I asked if they found what was causing the noise when pushing the start button. They said it was just a dead battery that's all, couldn't find anything else. This week, I drove the Corvette to Brookings, turned the engine off, but when I tried to start it again it made the same noise as before the new battery was installed. Worse yet, AAA said there were no AAA approved automotive service places within 30 miles, and they will only tow for 3 miles. I was terrified - 2 1/2 hours from home and no way to get there. After hitting the gas pedal a couple of times, I managed to get the car started, decided to try to make it home to Jacksonville. Took the car to Bob Thomas Automotive (BBB approved). They took the car right in, called me to say they hadn't found the problem yet, but assured me they would keep looking. Next morning their best technician called to say it took him 2 1/2 hours, but he finally found the problem. The grey wire to the fuel pump was loose. I will NEVER take my cars to Ken Scales again.

We were spending the night nearby when I found this shop and called to see if they could fit us in. We showed up early and they took our car in to recharge it. We were able to wait in their comfortable waiting area with our dog. After about an hour we were told they did the recharge, but in doing so they discovered a valve that needed to be replaced. They said if we could wait, they would replace the he valve (part was about $70) and recharge the system again at no additional charge. Unfortunately it would have taken an hour or more for them to get the part and additional time to install it, but we had a long drive ahead, so we couldn't hang around to get the repair done. What I appreciated was the clear explanation of the problem, their willingness to get the repair done that day, and to recharge the system again without charging us. We have been having the intermittent problem for a few months so the valve going bad made sense. I wish we could have stuck around for them to do the repair, but it just wouldn't work for us. It's always nice to encounter professional, trustworthy auto repair shops, especially when traveling. I recommend Kelly's if you're in the area and need a reliable shop!
