I got two shirts here the other night. Their selection of clothing is all top notch. The prices were more affordable than I was anticipating and the quality of the good is higher than I would have thought. These guys has found the spot where quality meets value and style. Rating based on customer service. The store has some cool stuff. Perhaps my demographic is not their target audience. Went in looking for jeans. I wanted a light shade of blue. In a nutshell, I was told a pair that was way too tight "looked good on me". When I asked about a larger size, he suggested that I buy the bigger size (from the Santa Fe store) and return it if I didn't like it. I asked if the larger size could be shipped to the Oakland store to try it on, and he said sure, and that he would call me when it came in (about a week and a half). Then crickets. And this was two months ago now. And I supported them during the pandemic with purchasing sight unseen. Very disappointed. read more

TL;DR - Great selection of high quality, unique stuff that you can't find anywhere else. - Amazing group of guys running the place who care about what they do - Exemplary customer service. What can I say about these guys that hasn't already been said? Having long been a fan of high quality menswear, I've visited all kinds of stores in all kinds of states/countries/etc. In my "travels," I've found that many will carry the staples (red wings, Gitman, some trail soap that makes you smell like a tree) that you can find in a lot of places. Good stuff? - Yes. Awe inspiring? - Sometimes. When I first visited Standard & Strange in 2012, they were still in the alley. They had some decent staple stuff and some local brands - nothing too catching. After moving out of state, returning and moving to Oakland (4 years later), I happened to have a friend who was new to the area & wanted to show him Temescal. I had noticed that S&S had a new amazing store front. I walked in and was greeted by Jeremy, Neil & Brandon. I started to notice brands that I had only heard about but had never seen in person. The geek out commenced. I ended up leaving with a pair of Trickers boots. Since then, this place has become the standard. Not only do they keep amazing stuff that they stand behind but they are consistently bringing in new, amazing things that you can tell they are proud of. It's the only place in Northern California that you'll find stuff like - McCoy's, Indigofera, Trickers, 1st PAT Rn, AKOG - and a bunch of other stuff that fans have probably never heard of but will come to love. Next, the service. These guys are committed to sharing their passion and keeping you informed about everything surrounding that McCoy's Buco J-24 L jacket you've taken an interest in (where it's from, how awesome The Real McCoy's is as a brand, etc..) The story I'll always remember is when I bought a shirt from them and the price was brought down a short time later. I was shocked with the level of honesty & character when they reached out to me proactively to tell me what had happened and that they had credited the difference to my account with them. Finally, I can't say enough about the guys working here. Jeremy, Neil & Brandon have all been always welcoming and have funneled their passion for what they do into the clientele they serve. They're great to geek out with or just shoot the s*** with. The flagship store of Hipster Hollow in what used to be a real part of town. Really, everything here sums up what is wrong with hipster culture. Workwear being peddled to man-children with biceps like my grandmother's wrists, non-technical and poorly designed backpacks selling for five-times their technical equivalent... and, here's the real winner: they sell something called "backpacker's cologne" in a one-ounce bottle. As a backpacker myself (AT, JMT, PCT regular), this really caught my eye. It's so sad to see vapid hipsters who are devoid of any sort of hobby or meaning in their lives try and glom onto a culture that they know nothing about in order to try and compensate for their aforementioned lack of masculinity. Standard & Strange is their Mecca. Have lots of money from mom and dad (who are back in Massachusetts or Connecticut) to blow on your plaid? By all means, go ahead. Continue to contribute to the degradation of our neighborhoods in East Bay. But, once you're done with that, let me suggest a new hobby: diving off of the Golden Gate Bridge! Everybody's doing it I hear, give it a try! These places in Temescal Alley need to go, and take the hipsters with them. read more

They're basically dressing me for my wedding from head to toe, taking time to help me through the process and make sure that everything is right. I know I'll continue to wear these pieces for years to come. Top all that off with clothing that supports responsible manufacturing processes? Yes. I appreciate their motto, "own fewer, nicer things," and I am happy to have items in my closet that will last. It's unfortunate to see reviews on here that aren't actually about the shop, the service, or the products, but rather seem to be an internal narrative of someone's own neurosis when they go shopping. Great service and very knowledgeable team. I came 20 minutes before closing on a Sunday night to check out the store. Brandon helped me find the right denim fit given the preferences I stated and his strong knowledge of the different denim brands and fits. Despite this taking well beyond closing time, he made me feel comfortable to keep trying on different jeans until I was feeling good about my selection. Additionally, two other team members were friendly and helped provide opinions and feedback on the jeans (even after all other customers left). Finding the right denim fit can be challenging and Brandon made it easy. High end denim is a roll of the dice if you get it online....the 'in person' experience at S&S gave me comfort that I would be happy with my purchase for years to come. The shop is focused on men's clothing and quality seems to be the #1 criteria for the store buyer. That quality comes with a price, so understand that the cost reflects that quality and the exclusive nature of the products sold...it is highly unlikely that you will walk into a room and find someone wearing the same shirt or slacks that you bought at S&S. Styles at S&S are focused on timeless design versus trends...I would expect something bought at S&S will look great for years to come. If you are not used to spending a lot on clothing, this is a great place to make a 'splurge.' If you have an appreciation for high end casual clothing and an interest in buying hard to find denim (American, Japanese, etc.)...this is a great place to check out. Sure...the jacket or jeans might be 2x much more expensive than what you find at another store, but it will probably last longer and you will end up wearing it for years instead of looking for something new a few months later. I am so happy I dragged my husband here. Took a few times to convince him to go in. He's extremely resistant to shopping, even more so if it involves expensive looking clothing. In his defense, he never fits into pants because of large bicycle thighs. But this shop not only had marvelous quality goods BUT pants that fit bicyclists! Jeremy was SUPER helpful and must have pulled out at least a dozen pairs of denim for us to try. Guided us through the material and cut difference and gave tips for care. Also, they have complimentary tailoring to bring up the leg length. Really nice when dealing with nice looking denim. Seriously thoughtful, considerate well rounded service. These guys are seriously legit. A well-curated stock of gentlemen's hardgoods that support local and USA made craft. I walked in to get a hat as a gift, and walked out in a pair of vintage steel-toed Red Wings that had been expertly re-soled via Greenwich Vintage. It's the kind of place that has all sorts of things you don't need, but have to have. Like those boots. I already have 2 pair of Red Wings. But I didn't have these... Great little shop, just around the corner from a place I have to visit on a regular basis in this wonderful neighborhood. The guys who run the place are super rad, and always game to entertain the stream of sometimes-peculiar folks who wander into terminally-hip Temescal Alley looking for fancy curated menswear -- shirts, sweaters, denim, etc. They helped me special order a sweet modern M65 jacket from a local supplier. If I had hair, I'd definitely hang out here while waiting for a cut at the froofy-manly barbershop across the way. Instead I just browse, hang out, and occasionally buy something indulgent. Word to the wise: if you're buying a pair of expensive jeans/other fancy menswear without consulting your "financial planner", a Dandelion chocolate bar (also sold on premises) will take the edge off your better half. read more

Heard about this store after looking for a place to try on some Rogue Territory jeans and heard about this store online. Went in and was pleasantly surprised by the selection of raw denim. I was sold on a pair of Rising Sun jeans and a pair of Red Wing Iron Rangers that were amazing looking. Overpriced, underwhelming products. Uncultured person manning the cash register (owner? awful). He was incredibly insulting of some woman's background, and made nasty insinuations about her job. Then fawned over her husband's degree, clearly out of his own insecurities - the cashier was fired from Microsoft... I had talked to her, she went to Stanford for a PhD and works at a prestigious organization. Shame on that cashier. I was already turned off by the store, its products, and the atmosphere, but that man clinched it. Shame, I live near here as a business owner, and am happy to share with my flocks of customers never to go to Standard and Strange for many reasons. How awful to treat someone that way. read more

I have wandered into the shop many times over the past couple years. i usually pick up laces or something small. Recently went by to check out some new denim. Ended up with some 3Sixteen shadows. Great selection of brands, nice location, amazing customer service. Went to pick up a pair of boots. Unfortunately they didn't have the size and color combination I wanted in stock. The gentleman who was helping me, Brandon, offered to order the boots. I explained to him that I needed them for a specific, upcoming event. He assured me that I would have the boots in time. Fast forward to a few days before the event. Due to shipping issues out of the shop's control the boots weren't going to make it to me in time. Brandon personally delivered the boots to me at my office in SF. Ensuring I had them in time for the event. Finally got a chance (read:excuse) to check out their new shop today and it is definitely a nice upgrade. Much bigger space with the same rustic vibe that I love. I'd been eyeing some rogue territory lightweight jeans on their website for some time and decided to come in to try them on. The staff was super helpful getting me sizes and giving me some advice on the nature of the jeans as they get worn. Raw denim naturally has varied characteristics in terms of stretch and give over time so it was awesome that the staff was knowledgeable about the products they carry and could give insight about the long term experience of wearing their products. After a ton of patience from the staff as I decided between two sizes I finally settled on a size and am now waiting for them to be hemmed so I can pick them up! Another great experience here and another purchase I'm expecting to be extremely happy with! Tip: They offer chain stitched hems on their denim for $25 along with their regular hems. I think it's through AB fits in SF but definitely a good option as I'm used to having to take them across the bay to Selfedge for the service! read more

I pre-orderd a pair of Alden 4515H Black Trapper Calf Plain Toe Boot. They were one of the only stores to have it available. When they arrived, it turned out I bought one size too large. I emailed Jeremy and he immediately started the process of exchanging them for a smaller size, even though he had to reorder them again. They came within a week, and I can't express how awesome it is to have great customer service, and owners who understand that when you buy stuff at this level, you're picky as well.
