My family was meeting in Helena from 3 different states. We went to the Staggering Ox on Thursday, June 21. My brother arrived just before 7 to grab tables and let them know we were coming. There were 16 of us. We ordered as we arrived as to not overwhelm the kitchen. There was one girl who appeared to be a supervisor or to have a little more experience than the other. She had bleach blonde hair with dark roots and black glasses. RUDE! The other girl had short brown hair and I have never met someone, especially in Montana, who had such terrible customer service. I had unfortunately already tipped in the jar on the counter or I would not have given a tip. I gave the cook a $20 tip when he came out to help clear plates and he was very gracious! The women kept telling everyone "We close at 8." Yes, we realize that. We are bringing you large group who are all eating. We arrived in plenty of time to order and eat our food. If your business is opened until 8pm that doesn't mean you have to be done with your food and out of the building by then. Both of those ladies were so very rude that we will never go back again. The one with short brown hair literally "dropped" ranch off in front of my niece and the dish "slammed." They were so irritated that we were there that it was very uncomfortable for all of us. I can't imagine the owners of this establishment would appreciate or allow this kind of service. It was very embarrassing. We asked them if one of them could take our picture and the brunette ROLLED her eyes! I said nevermind, I don't want to put you out. I then asked a customer if they would take it for us. Fun atmosphere. Food tastes fair. Took over 30 minutes to get our sandwiches and it wasn't very busy. When my hot sandwich came I opened it, to my disgust I found two thin slices of meat that only covered approximately two bites. I was told by the waitress that I was paying for the fresh baked bread and the experience. Two people in our party didn't get their sauces and one of us pulled a hair out of their sandwich. I have always loved the Ox, but this time my bread was dry and crumbly and the teenagers/20 something's were cussing in the back and it was so loud the guy in front couldn't hear himself think. Odd place. You order at a counter and they bring food to your table. You get your own drinks using glass mason jars. We told the girl at the counter it was our first time here and she helped us order. Tristen brought our food without napkins. He went to get some and brought one fork and one knife for us to share. Our sandwiches were dry and we realized there was no sauce. When asked at the counter he said he would bring it to us. When he did not, we went back again to the counter and he said he was busy. It's different, in an interesting "okkaaaayyyy this place is......different??" kind of way. It's a sandwich shop, as far as variety is concerned, they have plenty for the palette, vegetarian to carnivorous. It would be remisce of me not to mention that the bread used is baked in a can with the innards dug out and replaced with sandwich parts. Although, the novelty does wear off after a couple of visits. However, the local artist pieces on the walls will always offer an entertaining view. My personal favorite would be the portrait of the pensive grisly man with the skullet on a background of deep space. Sadly, you would find that piece is NFS. (Not for Sale) read more

This place is terrible. I will never go there agin. Sandwiches were dry. The sandwiches had grey meat. Every single table was dirty. They gave me a salad instead of a sandwich. I was a customer for the past 7 years, and something changed in 2010 that has carried over through 2011 so far. I have been to the Ox 4 times in the past year, had the Socrates Potato (absolutely disgusting - it was so bad and had no flavor, but did have a bunch of stuff on it). My poor fiance had the Nachos and they were horrible too, burned chips with a little cheese (also burned) on top, no beans, no jalapenos, no tomatos, no sour cream, and no salsa. What kind of Nachos are made like that? The LAST TIME I went, I had the Roast Beef sandwich, when they say horseradish, they MEAN horseradish, I couldn't even taste the roast beef (or anything else for that matter). I couldn't even eat the thing it was so bad, and when I pay 8.95 for a sandwich, I expect to enjoy it. Love the eclectic nature of the place though, that is what attracted me in the first place. Being so close to campus, this place is a very convenient to study in the cafe in the back but for the food I rather spend my money elseware. Customer Service - is awful, rude, and may perhaps just scare people away. Sitting with a friend studying I do not really care workers talking about how horrible it is to work there or complain about the "rules" that the resteraunt enforces or tries to enforce. They are also very slow in making food. Food - well visiting Helena you have to try one of there "famous" sandwhiches that everyone talks about. The sandwhichs are good but it feels like your eating a loaf of bread! Otherwise they are not bad but too $$$ for what it really is worth. Money Money Money $$ - take your money elsewear such as Bert and Earnies or Bullmens Pizza for some good food and great customer service. The staggering ox. Overall, since it is close by campus, and when I have the money and am there to study then I guess I would continue to visit. Worst place to come to on a Friday night. Get here 20 minutes before closing order for 4 people still here after 30 minutes waiting. People behind us already have their food. I'm not coming back. This is not only the best sandwich in Helena, this is the best sandwich in the world. I have never had anything that even comes close. This is my favorite place to eat of all times, ever, and I don't think anything else will ever replace it in my heart. I try to eat here at least several times every time I come home for a visit. I usually get the same thing, the meat veggie (I get turkey) with no onions, on wheat with ranch. I'm a little upset they started putting the sauce on the side. I like mine intermingled in my sandwich. I'm also a little upset they expanded (though I know they needed to) and now give you an option to sit on the new or old side. The new side is always cold and unwelcoming. The old side is the same great hippy vibe. I remember eating here in high school when I had no money and my friends and I would all order bread guts (if they had any, they always run out) with a side of ranch. It would be something ridiculous like $.85 or $1.25. We lived on bread and ranch, I'm sure it wasn't the healthiest thing, but we were poor! I guess they now do live music and serve alcohol. Yeah, so honestly? I don't understand what all the fuss is about. If you want a damn sandwich, go to MSM Deli in Tacoma. If you want bread baked in a can with, like, a salad inside, go to the Staggering Ox. I've just never gotten anything I truly enjoyed, and the fact that you have to pour your ranch/sauce of choice on the sandwich is so very annoying to me. I wasn't overly impressed with my sandwich. I had the Camel Toes and, not only was it on the small side but it had very little meat and even less flavor. They do have a huge menu so I'm sure I could find something better. I think next time I go I will try a potato dish or a quesadilla. read more

Little shocked by some of the bad reviews...I think perhaps you need to take the time to try a few different sandwiches until you find 'the one' for you. For me, that sandwich is the Nuke. I haven't ordered anything other than that for the last 5 years anytime I go here. I also always found the sandwich to be way easier to eat than a normal one... ?? True, the decor is a little overwhelming for some, but it's better than a tiny cramped sandwich shop. The windows on one side provide lots of warm sun if you're into that, while the other side is nice and cool if you're weird and don't like the sun. If you want a unique sandwich experience, then this is the place! Your first time here should be the Nuke. Then branch from there. Besides their tasty food, the bread is quite different. Shaped like a can, you will find a new and enjoyable way to dive into this one. The staff are very personable and have a uniquely playful approach to their customers which is quite refreshing compared to scripted corporate chains. So basically they have great food and enjoy to eat here. That being said, I love the food when it is what I ordered. I came here with my dad and brother and we ordered 4 sandwiches. We waited there for an excessive amount of time and finally my dad went and asked what was taking so long. The guy went to the kitchen and they started the excuses. Then they brought out our food and a little gift. The gift was 4 free sandwiches which was cool and all. Then we get home and realize none of our sandwiches were correct. I really like their sandwiches but I have to say that their prices have gone up pretty substantially over the years. $8 or $9 for a sandwich is what I usually spend. Staggering Ox is a great place for tasty, slightly unusually prepared sandwiches. The atmosphere is very unique but so wonderful. The outside of the building does not do the restaurant justice, but makes for a great surprise the first time you walk in. I ordered the black bean quesadilla and it was fantastic! My brother ordered a Clubfoot sandwich, which are very unusual in their presentation. The clubfoot is a sandwich made in a hollowed out "tube" of bread, served with your condiment on the side. Food was served promptly. It does get very busy but is worth the wait! read more

We are from Washington and every time we travel to Montana this is our first stop. My boyfriend and I both worked at the Spokane location when it was open. Unfortunately, the Helena location is the worst I've visited, every time I've visited. The gal who took our order, Kylie, was extremely rude when I asked for a sandwich from the Missoula menu. I was told "we don't do that here." My request was not very far fetched. As I have gotten a hot club foot at that location before. Just got their Texas Land Grab and was SEVERELY disappointed! Hardly any meat and there was a good inch of just bread. BBQ sauce wasn't anything special, tasted like anything store bought. Definitely not worth the $10. Go spend that on Bad Betty's if you're craving good BBQ read more
