The Union in downtown Helena is a superior dining experience and a welcome addition to the city's foodie culture. Its primary selling point is local--using beef from local ranches, encouraging Montanans to eat Montana raised products. All good. The interior is spacious, especially on the mezzanine. The airy feeling and subdued colors help to set a comfy vibe. All good. My group was there for dinner although locals claim lunch is better. It's difficult to see how that could be: the starters, a huge plate of lightly battered onions and mushrooms really went well with the curated list of beers and wines. The pea Ceasar salad was creative and oh so very good, and huge. My ribeye from Helmville was so tender, packed with flavor. Others raved over the sirloin. The sides were tasty and generous too--get the smashed Yukons. All Great. However, kitchen timing was terrible. We were just into the salads when the steaks arrived. Really. I don't understand the number of one star reviews. The Union is like The Bear if you've ever watched that show. Grill team and expo on display at the bar, great service as well. What a way to close out my Montana adventure -- with one of the most memorable meals I've had in ages. This farm-to-table co-op experience was exactly what I didn't know I needed, but everything I was looking for. We kicked things off with a beef liver pâté appetizer that was as rich and velvety as a Montana sunset. Then came the spring ricotta cavatelli -- pillowy, delicate, and bursting with fresh, seasonal flavor. The golden beet and plum salad was a masterclass in balance: earthy, sweet, tangy, and stunning on the plate. Because it's confusing between Old Salt and the Union, I posted this review under both: Went to the Union hoping for a fine dining experience in Helena. What I found was a pretentious, overpriced, underperforming eatery. Their hook is that they serve locally sourced ingredients cooked over a wood fire. PROS: wait staff was attentive and friendly; they did their job. Atmosphere was pleasant with the primary attraction being the wood burning fireplace visible throughout the restaurant. CONS: menu was very pricey and strictly al-la-cart (even the butter was an up charge). Steaks were expensive ($95 for a ribeye). My Sirloin was cooked perfectly, but very tough (I could hardly cut it with the knife provided). Bottom line: Overpriced Eatery read more

We randomly decided to have dinner at Union when they were celebrating being a finalist for Best New Restaurant in the James Beard Awards, and they absolutely deserve the accolade. What an incredible farm-to-table meal! I had a perfectly cooked trout with morels and snap peas, but lost half of it to my daughter. She added that to her "butter pasta" from the kid's menu, which was handmade cavatelli! And my husband had the shepherd's pie, which was also fantastic. Their wines & beers on tap went perfectly with the food and were nicely priced. A meal that outstanding and fresh in any major city would cost hundreds, but ours was totally reasonable. The onion rings were excellent. The service was good. Despite all the hype and performative displacement, my steak wasn't much better than something from a western sizzlin. I've had better steaks at Outback. Far better steaks in my own kitchen. And I ordered the most expensive they had. What WAS impressive is the manager running the front of house / Kitchen. My husband and I were excited to try this new fine dining experience, that offers locally sourced, farm to table, Montana food. We were not disappointed. The culinary experience was absolutely top shelf. We had an appetizer of lardo rosemary foccacia, chef cut rib eye, and a pasta dish with a delicious pesto dressing. Dessert was an exquisite carrot cake with the most delectable butter frosting either of us has had in many years. The dessert stood alone, in its own exceptional category. One area I felt warranted mentioning for consideration, was ambiance. I popped in here a couple hours before, "Dinner" so I had to make orders of the tapa's menu. For those of you who don't know what a tapa is... it's basically, "finger foods". Sometimes you get main course kind of options as a tapa, but they'd be miniature. Think, sliders or finger sandwiches or whatever. Their tapas menu is a classic one. Basically, large portions of what you might have as a side. Let me say, I forget what they called them -- corn something. I want to say balls, but I know they're definitely not called cornballs. I'm from the south... we call them Hushpuppies, and these puppies are an ode-to-man. Phenomenal! Superb. Exquisite. Splendid. Or as our friends from the south would say, "fantastico". I moved to Helena 4 years ago and this was BY FAR the BEST dining experience we've had. It was amazing from top to bottom. Food was A-MAZING! The entres do not come with sides, you have to order them seperate which I was leary about at first but I ended up loving it because we got to pick and choose what we wanted to try which is great for a picky eater like me. What a wonderful addition to downtown Helena. The butcher side of the operation is incredible! I'm in love with their bone broth, fresh lemon olives, and jerky. Cannot get enough. My husband adores their breakfast sandwiches, too. The salads and ready to eat meats are great to grab and take on your outdoor adventures. Just saying. We were lucky enough to snag reservations on their soft launch of the restaurant. One premium and one butcher's cut steak are available each night. By the time we got there, only the butcher's cut, sirloin, was available. Not my usual choice, but it was slammin! I would get it again, especially with the bone marrow butter. Our sides were fantastic--from the pea salad (my favorite), to the winter slaw, to the potatoes and beef fat fried onions. Hot diggity! The interior is strikingly beautiful, and I love the open fire in the kitchen. The smell of wood smoke drifts down the gulch. So, so happy The Union has upped the food game in Helena. We love the Union. Those fried onions in beef fat that come with ranch dressing are to die for. Also if you have room for dessert definitely get the carrot cake!! Most recently the shepherds pie was delicious - the short rib was a little dry but other words comfort food at its finest. We have sat in the atrium and at the bar; service has always been great. But nothing was to prepare us for $73.00 14oz Rib eye just cooked nothing special besides that mashed potatoes I think and if I got a $17 salad. Holy moly. And so you are aware. my company works on commercial restaurants and I will walk the heck out of a restaurant if I think it needs to happen. most of the time it would be because of the smell but certain orders mean a real nasty kitchen. So to be nice we stayed and thought we'll just see how it is, by getting something a little bit cheaper on the menu. Give the cook a chance anyway even though we were looking for a good steak. But that wasn't happening wow $73 bucks. Heck a table of 4 with drinks would have cost us just under $500 to eat good anyway? Right? and have a couple of beers anyway. So what we did was, my wife and I split a $34 pot roast of some sort, that no joke was more fat than beef. I even pointed it out to the Waitress she said she'd get me a discount which was super cool of her. $9.00 no joke I had three bites of meat I let my wife eat the rest of the meat it was okay really tender and I already planned on going to get burger later. The other couple both got the $21 shepherds pie total $42 for what should have been a portion for one thankfully they bought 2. We think the cook forgot how much Rosemary! is just a bit to much! And folks I like rosemary I use it in everything pretty much. And I got to say sometimes you need to be notified if you are going about business making mistakes of pricing to High when your just not there yet. Especially if your just starting out. I'm assuming this is a new endeavor for the company. Because I grow my own beef and I don't think my steaks would sell for much more than 35- maybe 40 bucks and I wouldn't serve a steak with out a choice of baked potatoes and a side salad. And I know what I feed mine and don't think there is any reason to leave that much fat on a cut. We came here for my birthday two days after it opened and we've been coming back ever since. The food has always been terrific and I try to order something different every time. We think the ambience is great....it's pure Montana. For different ambience try Lucca's. Clearly from reading the reviews some folks have had some bad service but we never have, except for once when a kitchen helper had to fill in for someone who was sick. Also it's pretty clear that a few people don't like this style of steak. The Union is in the running for The James Beard Award for Best New Restaurant. You don't get nominated for crappy food so I'm just gonna chalk up the bad reviews to different taste and that's okay. We're really happy The Union is a big success. It's one of the places that makes Helena a good place to live. read more

So sad, we were looking for the old Bert and Ernie's and found this place in it's spot! It looked very inviting. That's was the only thing inviting in this restaurant/"kind of a"butcher shop! We were there at 3:30pm and were told that they were only serving brunch. Brunch is fine and all but they were out of everything! Including all of their salads! How can you run out of all of your salads when that's 90% of your brunch menu? So sad, I didn't read all the negative reviews before we decided to sit down. A colleague and I came in for an early dinner on a weeknight. We were promptly seated and had the menu explained to us as it was not readily apparent what was being prepared that night. We both ordered ribeyes and a side. There was a little confusion on my order but the staff was quick to rectify the mix up and I was pleased with the outcome. The restaurant has a pleasant atmosphere and the service was quite good. The menu is somewhat simple and prices were reasonable. I'm not sure I'll have a chance to come back but it's worth checking out if you are downtown Helena and are looking for a good steak. read more

After my fifth meal at the Union I have consumed a fair amount of the menu and feel justified in being able to provide a review. I have consistently had quality meals with good service over three dinners, one breakfast and one lunch. My three steaks (all of which are cooked on a wood fired grill) have been cooked to my liking and each has had great flavor. I particularly like that they rotate the steaks on the menu so over a few months you have a chance to try something new every time you go. I also like the fact that they have the "Butchers Steak" category as a lower priced option; which gives you a chance to try cuts of meat you typically don't find at the grocery store butcher shops. I had a Denver steak last night that had great flavor (I mopped up the juices with a nice crusty piece of bread that is also browned on the grill) and previously I had a Merlot steak, which was also very flavorfull. The fact that the meats are grass fed and grass finished coming from Montana family ranches comes out in the flavor. The side dishes and vegetables also provide a nice variety from the everyday with pea salad, beet and nectarine salad and summer squash bomba rice livening up any meal. If you go as a single or two without a reservation, you might get the chance to sit at the counter in front of the wood fired grill station and watch the crew cook (and smell cooking meat). I had high hopes due to the reviews. We ordered the shepherd pie and it was overkill with spice and undercooked vegetables. They took it back and agreed it was done properly. We then ordered the RIB. Yes it's one little square piece of meat that comes sitting on two bones. The salad was overly salted. We thought it was a half a order, but it was not and it was $28. We then tried the carrot cake. It was good but dry Nothing great. We ordered the onion appetizer which I would have that again with a glass of wine, but would not have dinner there. The servings are very small and the prices are very large and the food was not good. I was very disappointed as I was looking for a new go to for dinner read more

This was my favorite meal in Montana. Everything was delicious. We had a family of 5 so ordered a more family style dinner with lots of different dishes. They accommodated us with bringing lots of plates. The ambience was very bright and inviting. They added nice touches with the flower bouquets. My favorite dish was a curry appetizer they had. Went into what we thought was a higher end restaurant for breakfast. We had to wait in line to order at the register. Only two options for breakfast sandwiches. They were supposed to have scones but we were told they hadn't made them because they were missing an ingredient. Our change was In quarters because they didn't have bills. Our sandwiches came in cardboard takeout containers and our coffee in paper cups. The sandwiches were good. Not great but good. The people were pleasant. The place was nicely decorated and clean. We've not eaten a lunch or dinner there but I hope they are better than "breakfast". I won't be able to talk my husband to go there again. read more

My brother-in-law, who lives in Helena, recommended the Union. There were 8 of us (1 child). A bit of a downer to start when we discovered the Union does not serve whiskey - only wine and beer. We made do. Our server, Hilary, was very pleasant, but as we would discover, not very good at her job. The Hostess, Sasha, was a bundle of joy -she made our stay pleasant. The menu is a bit weird - The steaks just list "Rotating Butcher" or "Rotating Premium". I had to ask how do I order a Filet. The answer - You don't! They do not sell filet's. They do Ribeye and strip steaks. I ordered the Ribeye Premium - my son-in-law and grandsons ordered the strip Butcher. Their steak was so tough they could barely chew it. My ribeye was very tender, but overcooked - I like it medium-rare- it came out medium. The other thing I did not like is that they pre-slice the steaks - not good. The salads, side dishes and pasta were very good - these items must be what James Beard is looking at because it sure can't be the steaks. My wife ordered the Shepard's Pie - Irish lass that she is. One problem- our server, Hilary, forgot to tell the kitchen so my wife had no dinner. Hilary managed to show up at or table after everyone had finished their dinner with the Shepard's Pie - totally Pathetic! The final straw was when I paid the check and noted that Hilary added a 20% gratuity because we had 8 people. Paying her almost $80 for pathetic service did not set well with me. My advice to people visiting Helena - check out the Overland Express or the Silver Star Steak House - stay away from the Union. rg read more
