William G.

After years of debate, my wife and I finally decided to have a retaining wall and new steps installed at our home. After interviewing several contractors, we decided to go with Sta-Built. We were impressed that the Sta-Built Rep, Dan Spath, actually listened to our needs and answered all our questions in a thoughtful manner. We signed a contract and Dan introduced us to our Project Manager, Michael Cowan. Michael went over the details of the contract once more with us to make sure we were all in sync. Starting with the same expectations is critical in any project and Michael made sure that happened. Throughout the project, Michael told us how and when each step would be performed. He introduced us to the work crew and their manager, Hector, and I can honestly say this was the hardest working, most meticulous construction team we've ever had the pleasure to work with. They showed up on time, worked long hours, and cleaned up the property every day before they left. In a nutshell. Dan and Michael were great. Hector and the crew were top notch. We got the project done at a high level of quality and a reasonable price. Sta-Built exceeded our expectations. We didn't just make our yard more maintainable and our house more attractive, we added value to our home. We can unreservedly recommend our Sta-Built team as experienced, hard working, well-organized, and ethical. And that's hard to find these days.

Replace wood decking with pavers.

Only reason it was not 5 was the original design was not achievable and they had to tweak it during construction. That was a little disappointing but they recovered the best they could. Looks good! Once we recover the yard and exposed siding I am sure we will enjoy it for years to come. They had to adjust for a four foot drop from one side to the other and six corners of the house.

Rear block wall

I had a project with 3 decent sized retaining walls and some dirt moving/back-fill. Two with concrete blocks and one with rock. Pricing was on the upper end of the quotes I received, but the engineering provided up front made me more confident Sta-built would provide a quality installation. Scott provided excellent service and attention to detail. He made sure that we were fully satisfied with the final product. We are very pleased with Sta-builts work/product/communication and recommend them to others.

I can't say enough great things about Sta-Built Construction. I torn down an above ground pool and had a sand pit that was a mess. Sta-Built installed artificial turf with a brick boarder and it looks fantastic. Jamie Williams the project manager was very professional and made sure the project was completed to my satisfaction. Highly recommend this company. The clean up of the project was also amazing.

No job is too small! We have a very small front yard area where we wanted to install pavers. Chris came to our home and helped us work out a design to suit our needs. Zac (project manager) accompanied Chris on the next visit to discuss the project and answer any questions. Bernardo and crew showed up on time the day of install (along with Zac). They got started immediately and worked until the job was completed. It was a very full day for them but they didn't slow down until they were finished. They did an AMAZING job!! Zac helped save the day when an unforeseen issue arose. It was quickly resolved to our satisfaction. I wouldn't even mention it, but I was impressed with the quick resolution and felt that it was a positive thing to mention. Everyone that came to our home was professional, courteous, and friendly. This all resulted in a beautiful 8' circular design with lights that is ABSOLUTELY beautiful. Thank you to everyone that worked on our project.

If you could describe Exteriors West with one word it would be "Outstanding" with a capital O. Dan, who is owner and installer, has got the installation down to a science. Dan arrived at my home around 8am to install a 16' X 20' aluminum patio cover which he flawlessly and meticulously installed by himself and completed around 6:00pm, Including cleanup. He has been doing this work for 25 years now and it shows! Do you remember the days of great customer service and honesty of business owners in the 50's? Well there are a few still out there and Dan is one of them. Maybe that is why the Better Business Bureau has given Exteriors West an A+. He completed the patio cover then proceeded to look over the cover with a fine tooth comb, wiping down the cover removing any finger prints or dirt he saw then he continued to look it over and painting any scratch or blemish with the factory touch up paint. Just this alone took about 45 minutes to an hour this is how meticulous Dan is and what kind of commitment he has to make everything perfect. When Dan started the job he put down sheets of cardboard and covered my deck with it to protect it. And at the end of the job he swept up his work debris and picked up the cardboard. He then blew off my deck with a leaf blower and picked up any stray garbage. My deck was left cleaner than when he got there. Then fit and finish of my cover is outstanding! From the planning, selection of materials and construction, Dan has been very patient and full of information and suggestions. If you need a patio cover, carport, RV cover, railings, window awnings, whether it be residential, commercial or industrial, Exteriors West is the company you want to go with. He said he does jobs all around Washington and told me he had just returned from a commercial job in Oregon. Sorry if this sound like a commercial but when I find a company that does an outstanding job all the way around, I have to tell someone. And today, you're that someone.

First, there were several sheet metal screws left around the deck and in our driveway after they left - one of them ended up in my truck tire. Also, during the estimate we talked about covering up our existing 4X4 posts with the same material used on the new posts (to match). I don't think it made it into the statement of work however. Still, I called them to ask if I could pay to have them come out and add this. No response. Called again and left message - no response.

Big Promises - Little Follow Up…read more I DO NOT recommend you use Better Homes Home Improvements (BHHI) for two reasons: poor follow up after initial construction and shoddy craftsmanship. Background: We contacted BHHI to build a deck and pergola cover in our back yard. We worked with John Boughal, starting in August, 2017. He was very easy to work with and is very experienced. We signed a contract and used the company's recommended credit union. The total project cost: 15,000. Because of the summer rush, construction did not begin until October. Construction took three days and the workers were pleasant and professional. However, as part of tying in the deck to the house, they had to cut into the hardiboard siding. Their process left a 3" gap between the deck and the hardiboard. It took some conversations with John to convince him to put in trim to cover the gap. Once they were complete and left, they left trash, sawdust, and extra screws. They also did not fix the hardiboard siding and left the trim unpainted on the ends. By December, the gutter end piece fell off, the deck pieces started to warp, and one corner of the deck started to raise. I called John and left messages, took pictures and sent two texts. I received no answers. In June, I called the main office and talked to Paul, a co-owner. He said he would have someone come out and fix the problems. A week later, some guys came out and fixed the boards with extra screws. The funny thing was that they mentioned that they knew about this type of board warping --- why did they not add extra screws during initial construction? They also caulked the exposed nails on the trim and said they would come back to pait the trim. Shortly after talking to Paul, I did receive a call from John apologizing for not returning my calls/texts because he receives a lot of spam on his phone? A month later, the workers have not returned. I took pictures and sent a text to Paul. Shortly thereafter, I received a call from John saying that he never promised to paint the hardiboard or trim. That they never do that and some people prefer the 3" gap with flashing exposed. Here is what I think: I am paying $15,000 for a deck and cover. For that amount of money, I believe I deserve to receive a professional product (and warranty) that seamlessly ties into my house and maintains the integrity of the house against weather and insects. For shoddy craftsmanship and poor follow-up, I do not recommend you use this company.

It was a seamless transition! Yes it took longer than we hoped, but 95% of those issues were related to the city of Olympia. The work was done professionally and as cost effectively as possible. The foreman, Joey, was able to come up with solutions for finishes when our budget was nearly dried up. Reading some of these other unjustified reviews makes me sick. However, a mishap costing us an extra $5K and communication with Luis left me feeling uncomfortable. I would not recommend him to others. I asked for 3 sides of our large backyard fence to be torn down and reconstructed. I said I wanted it to wrap around from our previous newer fenced section to our home. I asked for a walk-in gate. This was all in the LMS quote/bid. I asked Luis if we should do a walk-through before work began, and he said no, that wouldn't be necessary. This will be important later... By end of day 2, I realized they were leaving out a large portion on 2 of the sides. NO gate planned. I double-checked with Luis and he said other than the gate, which I guess was forgotten, that the 2 sections weren't apart of the bid. WHY would someone want to leave two 8-foot panels of old, withered, falling down fence between sections of new 7-foot fence? WHY would someone not complete a fence to the home, and leave a huge gap? That doesn't make sense. But, he told me it would cost an extra $5K. Unfortunately, I felt stuck since I wanted this job done, and they had already begun construction. I agreed, and now my project was costing us 1/3 more. On the 4th day, Luis called me while I was at work. He said the fence & gate were completed, and 2 of his guys would be waiting in my driveway for the FULL payment. I don't get cell service at the school I teach at, and as I'm driving home, I find out I'm responsible for racing to the bank within 20 minutes and picking up my kids from school. Impossible. Not only this, I find it unprofessional that there was no *walk-through* offered after the work was completed. He didn't want to give my husband and I a chance to look it over first? Make sure the craftsmanship was okay? I just don't agree with paying $15K for without this step. The next day, he was working another job far away so he couldn't collect from me. I offered to pay him the following day. Immediately Luis' texts became short, rude and made me uncomfortable. He claimed he couldn't pay "his guys" because of me. I even offered to pay him on the weekend, but he said he was out of town. He said, quote, "You have my money, but it is what it is." I'm sorry, the way you conduct your business has absolutely nothing to do with one client... the work literally JUST GOT DONE!! Banks are only open certain hours, and I have a full time job myself. He was paid the exact week that the work was completed, but after several tense text conversations. He would not text for 2 days and then demand to come by the next morning. "I will come by in the morning." No friendly greeting or even a question if that's ok with me. What?? One of his guys broke one of our in-ground irrigation sprinkler pipes, and when I told him my husband noticed this, I got no response until days later. I asked again, and he said it was all fixed. If I hadn't have said anything.. would he have told me?? For the additional $5K, we agreed to pay the following month. Luis sent me multiple Venmo requests. I tried several times to pay him via Venmo, but Venmo flagged it as "unsafe" and would not let it go through. Somehow, again, this was my fault, and I had to receive several curt texts. I asked him where I could send a check, and his response was "The address is on the bid". Just not .. kind. I always tried to be friendly and open. After our check was sent and cashed, we got no receipt and no "thank you for your business" email or text. Check sent, nothing. Lastly, he avoided questions about their warranty. On their website it says 2 years; on the contract, it states that the warranty goes by the materials - which I have no idea about. I asked several times, no answer. To this day, I have no idea if they'll fix something within a year or even 6 months. All in all, I'm left feeling unsatisfied about our business exchange. While the work seems quality, Luis' demeanor and the fact that we had to pay such a large extra cost for something I asked for in the bidding process leaves much to be desired. I hope this review will help someone.
