This update is strictly regarding the Black Friday Gives Back event, one of the biggest disappointments of the shopping season.
I want to acknowledge first of all that this event was to raise money for five charities, and that is great for the season. I never want to lose sight of that. However....
The first posting on Facebook to advertise for this event stated that the mall would close to the public, that there would be special sales available only for ticket holders, that there would be a V.I.P. room with treats for us, etc etc etc. Sounded like a lot of exclusive fun and a chance for special shopping. Told that only ticket-holders would be admitted to the mall, we even bought additional tickets for the kids so they could participate.
Now the reality...
The mall remained open to the public. Kids didn't need those $10 tickets after all to be inside, only if they wanted to enter the "special area," which turned out to be a roped off section of the hallway in front of Winners, with some sparkling juice, meet and cheese board, and chocolate bells from Purdys. Yep, that's it. To add insult, we were refused "re-entry" for another glass of juice at the end of the evening, even though there were no more attendees waiting to enter for the first time and there were over a hundred glasses of juice sitting there already poured out.
Employees, whether paid mall admin people or perhaps some helpers, seemed frustrated, frazzled, and totally out of patience to address any concerns. One in particular was extremely rude, and I mean extremely. Maybe things weren't going well for them, or maybe there had been some disagreements before we arrived, but regardless, we paid the penalty for their bad attitudes.
All in all, we would not participate in events in the future and regret roping in friends to come with us to this one.
Oh - and the frosting on the cake?? There were NO special sales for us. We were handed a sheet that purported to give us the skinny on sales, but they were clearly posted for the public at each store - not one special for us, except for free mints at one location if we spent $25 first. Uh, no thanks, and thanks for nothing.
Do I sound jaded? Yes. Based on the letdown from expectations raised in the beginning. Beware -- lesson learned. read more
