Back for more of the vegan lunch option. So much food and such a great price point
    Lindsey C.

I always knew Srees was downtown and am so bummed it's taken me years to finally check it out for lunch. Oh my, so very very delicious!! The owner (Mrs. Srees perhaps by the looks of another review) is the sweetest woman and the minute you open the door she shoots up ready to serve you. The lunch offerings are always on rotation so lots of varying options, plus she always has a vegan lunch option(s). Tuesday and Thursday you can get her samosas for just $1.50 and are they so delicious, chock full of potatoes, veggies and spices. The price is great around $6.99 for a very large offering. Served over rice and comes with a fabulous piece of fresh naan bread. Her homemade hot sauce is some of the best I've ever had. No frills, the simplest place inside but the food is delicious. Another awesome (vegan) lunch option in the city.

Chicken Biryani Friday Indian beans and peanuts Raita

I was thrilled to find this place after waiting at the DMV for hours. The lady was very warm in greeting and serving me. This place feels very much like a family dining room turned restaurant. Perhaps not the best place to have a date, but great for grabbing something quick to eat. I'm not an expert in Indian food, but the chicken biryani, beans and peanuts were a bit on the salty side. Though the raita did neutralize it a little. Pretty satisfied for a quick lunch at just $7! But if I'm craving for biryani, I'm still going back to Salem's.

I definitely did enjoy the food here and I would not hesitate to come here again! I felt the price was reasonable considering the fact that I was not able to finish my lunch serving and gave the rest to my brother and it was enough to fill us both up! What I especially love is that they know exactly how they prepared each dish, the list of ingredients they used, and that they can explain to you exactly what you are getting even though English is not their first language. They are very accommodating and have both vegan and non-vegan options as well as gluten-free and non-gluten-free options (and they know what those terms mean and can identify which dishes go into those guidelines). They also let you taste test everything before deciding what options you truly want to go with which is really helpful since some of the options are a lot tastier than others. The fact that they didn't make me feel like I was being too much with this is big deal because I really was asking several layers of questions and they were very patient and actually enjoyed explaining their cooking process to me which made me feel that much more welcome coming here again. I also love that they are constantly changing their menu so there is always something new to try. My absolute favorite dish here and one that I wish they served more (which I definitely recommend trying if you can) is the "Okra and Peanut dish" which is not a dish I have seen at a lot of similar style restaurants here in Pittsburgh. The level of spice is perfect and I love the way my breath smelled for the rest of the day

Comforting & flavorful are understatements. I walk past the Sree's sign everyday and finally decided to stop in one day. Authentic Indian food is so hard to come across in Pittsburgh! Mrs. Sree's restaurant reminded me of walking into my Nana's for Sunday dinner. Food has so much more purpose and value when the chef herself is serving you. Although it was filling, I ate some for lunch and then saved some for later to make sure to I ate every bite of her delicious hard work. The menu is very friendly to my vegan and gluten free friends. That is, because 30% of India's population are vegetarian. The spices add so many extra benefits to each bite. The turmeric is anti-inflammatory, ginger is great for the gut, and cinnamon serves as a great anti-oxidant. I will definitely be getting food here more often. Indoor seating only is available.

I just want to give Sree a big hug. The servings were generous and the food was authentic and tasty. Going into Sree's Foods feels like you've been invited over for dinner. While the menu wasn't as extensive as a regular dine-in Indian restaurant, I loved that there were a lot of vegan options to choose from. Your could either get 3 vegan/vegetarian sides or 1 protein and 1 vegan/vegetarian. The price was around $7.00. In summation, that's a lot of food served with a flour tortilla and a generous heap of rice for a great price! I hope to be back soon!

The staff is incredibly friendly, the crowd is always happy, the food is tasty, healthy, and inexpensive. I can't ask more of a restaurant. Open for lunch only, Sree's serves four fully vegan vegetarian dishes and one chicken dish daily. Choose chicken + one veggie or three veggie dishes for $5. The menu repeats weekly; that is, every Monday has the same options, every Tuesday has a different set of options, and so on. The menu changes up from season to season; currently, the menthi carrots (Monday) and aloo saag (spinach potato, Thursday) are my two favorites. The food is cooked off-site, and brought into this small space for lunch daily. Sree and his family have three other locations, including a full restaurant in Sharpsburg. Probably the healthiest, tastiest, and best value in all of Downtown Pittsburgh.

    Not my cup of tea.

If you're looking for an inexpensive meal, this is your place. If you're looking for an inexpensive meal that looks like it scared away the health inspector, this is also your place. Despite the disheveled, unclean, and initially frightening appearance, I said hey, I'll give it a try. To be honest if you love spicy food, you might enjoy Sree's. In my opinion the food was too spicy and all other favors were lost in the shuffle. I moved on to the rice, unfortunately one of the sides was on top and the rice was completely drowned in curry. If that's your style, more power to you. Personally I was not a fan.

Homemade samosa, chicken curry and fresh coconut chutney

Mrs Sree makes fresh of the griddle dosa (South Indian crepe which is vegan and gluten free). Inside for a filling is a masala potato and you get a side of coconut chutney and homemade soup (sambar). This lunch is my fav and fills you up but does not make you sleepy. All this for just $7, it cannot be beat. I will also try and make it on on Tuesday and Thursday for her homemade samosa (pastry with spiced potato and peas filling). This homemade appetizer can be added your meal if you are hungry as her portions are big. This place is the best, homemade food that early morning by the same hands that serve you at lunch. You have to try this place, the food and service is top notch

Spicy Chicken Hyderabadi, Grape Leaves and Mixed Veggies ( top left), and Baby Eggplant in Peanut and Coconut Gravy (top right)

Overall Impression: A true staple of what Indian home cooking really is. The Food: Not only is there an all-vegan option for her lunch making it friendly to special diets, but the menu changes every day to cycle through her amazing dishes and provide new offerings to newcomers. My personal favorite is Tuesday, where she makes homemade samosas (to die for) and has one of my favorite side-dishes, grape leaves! In my most recent visit, I ordered the Large Meal (because I'm worth it) which included Hyderabadi (Spicy) Chicken, grape leaves with mixed vegetables, and Tomato Dal--all over a bed of rice with plenty of different curries to go around. Some of her curries are similar in taste and relatively spicy, but some of the vegetables are less so, like her green beans, and baby eggplant. Just make sure to ask her which ones are which. I do feel like the different curry could have more depth of flavor to separate them from each other, but that would be my only suggestion of improvement. The Restaurant: When you walk into Ms. Sree's, don't be put off by the cafeteria-style set up or the old equipment she uses--I assure you I've eaten there at least once a week and I'm still alive! She always makes sure to greet you when you walk in, and always asks how your day is going. She gives me all the grandma feels, and it's backed up by her overall sweetness and appreciation for her customers. There is a collection of photos of her late husband on the wall, who also used to work at the restaurant (before my time), and I'm sure she still keeps the place open as an honor to him, which gives me even more feels. (I'm not crying, you're crying!). The menu itself is very well-priced. I've never paid more than $9.50 for a meal, and that's when I'm being gluttonous. The amount of food you receive for that price is well worth it, adding even more value to her home-style cuisine. TL;DR Ms. Sree is my go-to for my Indian food cravings, which occur at least once a week. She has me addicted to the wonderful spice pallet and grandma-style food. If you're into commercial Indian cooking, which is what most people are used to, you'll see from fellow reviewers that you'll be disappointed that it's not typical by any means--but to me, that's the best part.

I wouldn't say anything in particular was the best ever, but everything was really good, which in itself is just awesome. The paneer tikka was good. Nice a flavorful. The palak chaat was fine - I'd say it was mostly just palak pakoras and didn't really have much of a flavors of a chaat. Proabably this was the only somewhat disappointing item. The paneer lababdar was really good. Asparagus kofta was probably the even better, and then the dal makhani was also good. We ordered naan in a couple of batches and enjoyed it most when they brought it out really fresh out of the tandoor. The bullet naan was really good. Garlic naan was good too. Really nice people and thoroughly enjoyed this Mother's Day feast.

The space is primarily bench like seating so keep that in mind. Service was a tad slow as we waited a bit to place our order and for the food to come out. The menu was varied, which I appreciated. I had granny's chicken, which had good flavor. The spicy naan was mild in my opinion, though others in my party thought it was too much to pair with a 7 spice level. Parking out front is easy. Okay option.

this is a long overdue review for my favorite indian restaurant in the city (and possibly my…read morefavorite restaurant of all). i eat here almost every week, but keep forgetting to leave a rating. time to fix that :) bombay to burgh is an amazing restaurant. it's always delicious, with food that tastes fresh and perfectly balanced. as a fan of indian food, i love how the menu isn't stuck on the classic dishes that you find in every indian restaurant in the US. sure, you'll find butter chicken, tikka masala, palak paneer, naan, and biryani, and they are all very delicious! but there are also dishes like bagara eggplants (described by the menu as "spice stuffed baby eggplants in a roasted peanut, sesame, poppy seeds and coriander gravy, finished with tamarind and coconut") and chicken xacuti (described as "a classic, aromatic chicken curry from the coastal region of Goa, India, known for its complex blend of freshly roasted spices, toasted coconut, and tamarind for a tangy balance"). i ordered both of these tonight and can vouch that they are extremely tasty and worthy of your attention. personally, my only struggle here is that literally every item on the menu looks delicious, and i hate having to choose! which brings me to my favorite part of this restaurant: sunday buffet. now, the food is wonderful every day of the week. i just ordered some tonight myself, so i definitely recommend it. that said, my absolute favorite time to come is for the buffet on sunday. i think buffets get a bad reputation for being all about quantity over quality and for having an unpleasant atmosphere (the passive aggressive "don't waste food" signs that most have don't help, either). sadly, these complaints are true of most buffets. bombay to burgh is a wonderful contrast and, in my opinion, does buffets the way they ought to be. the atmosphere is pleasant (no signs!) and you're likely to see many regular customers. there's a good chance you'll even be greeted by the very owner, G, and get to speak with him a bit! the staff is all very friendly and helpful, always doing their best to make sure you enjoy your visit. they are always happy to help if food needs to be refilled at the buffet or if you want to order anything. finally, and most importantly of all, the food is amazing! unlike most buffets, bombay to burgh only puts out a limited number of offerings: 2 appetizers, 2 meat entrees, 2 vegetarian entrees, 1 bread, 1 rice, 1 dessert, and 1 beverage. i think this is the perfect number to ensure there's both variety and quality. plus, you can actually try a little bit of everything, which usually isn't possible at giant buffets. my favorite part is that every week brings new food, which is now usually themed around a certain region of india. you know they'll always have reliable butter chicken and garlic naan to make you happy, but the rest of the buffet might be dishes you've never eaten before. it's a perfect way to explore different flavors and new food, without worrying you'll waste your money. eating out is a bit pricey anywhere these days, but i personally think that the buffet is still very affordable. have you seen the price of appetizers recently? just the fact that you can choose from two of those with your meal makes it a good deal to me! i feel very fortunate that i get the chance to eat here regularly. while i've loved indian food for over 20 years at this point, bombay to burgh has taken my appreciation to a whole new level and has me researching more food to cook myself. it's a wonderful place to eat!

While not as large as other restaurants naan, it had a great puffy texture and a lovely flavor. Biryani looked good on its transit to a nearby table. Next time we're back we'll definitely order it. Those who may not have a reference point as far as Indian cuisine is concerned may not notice this. To give specific examples from our last foray at the restaurant: 1) Punjabi Kadi is a standard, staple dish in the Punjab region of South Asia. In its current iteration, served in the buffet at Taj Mahal, the "pakoris" (fritters) in the kadi were half-cooked. 2) Goat curry--another North Indian staple was had several cubes of goat similarly half cooked. Or maybe the selection of meat was not good. Either way we ended up trying several pieces & then ultimately leaving them uneaten. 3) Lachcha Paratha was similarly half cooked. There were several parts of the paratha which had raw dough. Indian cuisine is not just about "masala" (mixture of different spices). It is about first selection of right ingredients. It is about adding the right spices. And above all it is about ensuring the marriage of those spices to the ingredients and ensuring every part of the food is adequately cooked. It was quite telling that none of the patrons that for that morning lunch hour were South Asian. Perhaps they have learnt to keep away from the restaurant. The service though, was polite, attentive and respectful. The ambiance that of a casual eatery. It will take a lot of time before it attracts its old clientele back, if ever.
