GIANT warehouse full of everything you would need to make clothes, blankets, covers, etc... Not going to lie, it was very overwhelming, but I went in without a project in mind. If you know what you're looking for it is quite easy and very convenient that you cut your own material. The prices were good, considering after joanns closed there are limited places. Wow, I felt a little like a Project Runway contestant combing through bolts and shelves of fabric trying to find just the right piece. As someone who is not a seasoned sewer and who is attempting a project that is a big experiment for me, it was a bit overwhelming but I was very happy with the pieces I left with. They have lots of bins that were fun to peruse. I found some zippers for a few dollars. The people cutting fabric are the some ones that check you out so if it's busy, I can take awhile to measure and pay for what you need. The store was clean and organized. Parking easy. What an amazing wonderland of fabric for anyone looking for a generous variety of options for different types of projects. There are rows and rows stacked from floor to ceiling of different types of fabrics. The cotton bolts are all well organized in different aisles - mostly organized by color/style. But my advice: walk down each aisle if you have the time! I found so many treasures going down each line of the cottons. The upholstery is all organized in one section, but are in rolls leaned up against each other so they're a bit harder to grab out of the buckets. But wow, there is no shortage of upholstery styles for you. I spent 2.5 hours here taking my time to find exactly what I wanted. You cut your own fabric (as long as it's under 5 yards) which is nice and quite therapeutic hah! Just label how many yards you got at what price and they'll apply the discount at the register. Prices are affordable and you can't beat the selection - staff was so nice and personable! Will definitely be coming here in the future instead of some of the closer big box fabric stores. read more

I was initially overwhelmed at all the textile choices and notions. I've been to both stores and so happy I found them.

This is the largest warehouse of fabric that I've ever seen. Large variety/abundance of fabric is a huge understatement. It's overpowering. Walking in I was overcome by a "this is your grandmothers nursing home" smell but once you're in there for a few minutes you get used to it. It's largely self service and they let you cut your own fabric if it's fewer than 4 yards. An unfortunate part of this place is that the staff don't wear name tags or uniforms and there's no way to identify who works there or who can help you. And most of the time there wasn't even anyone at the register. Once I did find someone, she was extremely helpful and took me around the store to find the perfect fabric for my project. She was very knowledgeable and professional, and took her time with me, which I appreciated tremendously. The prices are a bit high but if you catch them when they have a sale, I went during a 50% off sale, it's can be comparable and even cheaper than Joann's or other fabric stores. They also have a variety of other do-hickeys like buttons, zippers, rhinestones and other things. If you need a large cut and don't want multiple cuts, this is where you need to be! read more

The only thing really not on deal is the leather.... which I have purchased on numerous occasions for Renn Fest costumes. Most of the fabric is cut your own unless purchasing multiple yards... then they use the roller table and measure it for you. It can be hard to find someone to help you find something and if you show up during peak time, you will wait in line to checkout. They don't have much for trims or ribbons, but fabric in surplus! I came to visit my son who recently moved to Minneapolis, MN from overseas the first week of August 2021. I arrived from the East Coast at the end of the month and am staying 30 days. This is our first time to the State of Minnesota. In the meantime, one of his co-workers suggested my son take me to SR Harris Fabrics. I did read the reviews and some were favorable and some not were received. OMG! I walked in and could not contain myself! It was Christmas in September! I was In "sewing heavy!" I know I screamed and was jumping up and down as if on a game show! The service was impeccable. I was able to find someone to help me and my son effortlessly. One of the sales personnel was even gracious and took several areial pictures for me. I have already posted to my Facebook page! The selection of fabrics organized considering the large inventory. It definitely was well-organized than any large fabric store in NY. I was extremely impressed! My son and I were in the store for four (4) hours. I was shocked at the honor system in cutting your own fabrics and the 50% saving on fabrics everyday but speciality fabrics. As a result, fabrics and notions purchased and two days later I made my son his burnt orange rust suede on one side and crochet knit on the other side envelope style pillow forms 24"x24". SHOPPER'S BEWARE OF NEW MANAGEMENT: NOTE: I'm finding that I'm not alone with having prices change. It's a switchbate! This store is amazing and full of great product. However, they need to better organize their pricing and categories for customers. For years I have known about this warehouse and have always had a great experience. At this particular visit I was looking to spend $300 on fabrics to find that they had mislabeled a fabric to which exceeded my costs. In essence I saw, in writing, $4.99 yd. on the actual crossbeam with the fabric. They stated that the product is $6.99. When I requested to see the catalog or sign to indicate the product price change, they refused and stated it doesn't exist. How incredibly disappointing! In my line of business I need to make things clear for our guests/customers. If the guest shows a number somewhere other than what we had thought, we have to honor what is stated and correct the error moving forward. I'm always reasonable with people and understand we need to support each others businesses in this economy. This particular day with this saleswoman, she wasn't going to hear it. I had a wonderful experience. I was making a quilt and ran out of a certain fabric. Went back and looked through entire store - until during the third trip around I realized that I had actually purchased everything that had been on the bolt! Spoke with a saleswoman (wish I would have gotten her name - as she should get a raise) and she took the little swatch of fabric I'd brought in and went and dug around somewhere and found my fabric!!! LOVE SR Harris! You can find anything you want here - though whether you can pull it out from under the stacks and stacks of fabric is another thing! I wish I were a better seamstress because I could love to be able to make clothing from the large variety of stuff they have. I've run out of stuff that I can make/use in my home! I was there one day, walking out empty handed after just wanting to look. I ran into who I assume was the owner and he said "You couldn't find what you wanted!?!" I told him I was just scoping things out and he said "Come back in! I want you to take samples!" and he gave me some scissors to go back and take small samples of the fabric I was considering. You don't get that service any where else! I find that the prices aren't SUPER great (even at 50% off) on everything (quilting cottons can still be $5-6/yard) - often with a coupon you can get things for less at Joann, but the variety at SH Harris is unmatched. It will be challenging to find a specific fabric, but rest assured, you WILL walk out of there with what you're looking for. Have patience as you navigate through the non-labeled aisles and search for fabric. There is not a lot of staff throughout the store and you cut your own fabric and it's based on the honor system. There are a few fabrics where it will need to be cut by staff (eg silk) but otherwise, you're on your own. After reading about this place quite a while back here on Yelp... I finally made it over here...and WOW! It's an unbelievable and overwhelming selection and experience! I've never experienced anything like this...and I've been to many fabric stores.. including ones in New York City....be prepared to get lost in a whole load of fabric! I am disappointed as to what happened today (valentines day) upon entering the store with my sister. She is currently going through chemo and went into the store wearing a face shield that was below her chin because she is having trouble breathing. We were greeted with a clerk saying that she needed to be wearing a cloth mask and that it was the governors orders. Unfortunately she could not put a piece of cloth over her mouth and continue to breath normally, and had to leave to her disappointment. The staff can look up this mandate on health state mn us and find the following. "It is not known whether face shields (a clear plastic barrier that covers the face) provide the same source control for droplets as face masks, but they may be an option in situations where wearing a face mask is problematic." It would be nice to have some common sense when enacting safety for staff and customers, instead of making the lives of these people harder than it has to be. read more

While I really enjoy going to the store in Brooklyn Park, and I have spent many dollars and a lot of time there. I decided to try the Burnsville store this time. This store is quite a bit smaller than the one in Brooklyn Park, and it has more of a JoAnns vibe. I went in the store looking for buttons for a craft project, I spent an hour looking through the button bin getting the right buttons. I had them bagged in 3 bags specifically to not mix them up - I needed the same color for three items. I was given the go-ahead to leave them on the counter to go look at some fabric for a separate project. When I got back to the counter the saleswoman had counted the 95 buttons (which I said I would do and we had plenty of time to do before close) and then put them all in the same bag. She had been cutting at the table next to me the whole time I was there so she knew how long I had taken looking for those specific buttons. When I confronted her saying that I had them separated into three bags for a reason she said: "Well now they are in one". I said that I was upset because I had spent the time and specifically put them the way they were. There was no apology or any sense of remorse. It may not seem like a big deal or who cares, I can separate them out again, but it will take some time because they were chosen very carefully. I will never be shopping at this store again, her actions and brazen rudeness is unacceptable in retail. The situation did not have to happen, and an apology or "oops" would have gone a long way. read more

Holy bolts of fabric, Batman! If you like order and neatness, this place will fry your brains and leave you babbling senselessly. However, if you're game for hunting and gathering, you will most certainly be rewarded with some great finds. SR Harris is like the junkyard of fabric stores in the sense that they have EVERYTHING. Quilters, apparel sewers, outdoor sewers, interior decorators, and upholsterers will not be disappointed with the wide range of fabrics. They have a lot of name brand fabric remnants such as DKNY and Theory, if that is important to you. It's all loosely organized in the warehouse though, wander in the general area of your preferred fabric until you find something. And if you see something you like, you might as well buy a lot of it because you might never see it again. If you go in with a genera list of what you're looking for, ie black stretch wool or green ballistic nylon, you'll have a successful shopping trip. I don't like prints that much, so this place is great for quality solids. If you buy a yard or more from a bolt, it is 50% off the listed price. Pretty cheap and you don't feel guilty if you mess something up. They're also great for buying different types of nylon webbing for bag straps and what not, though not for the accompanying notions like snaps and buckles. My favorite shelf is the one dollar per yard fabric shelf near the front, full of hideous seasonal or cat patterns. I like using this for my draft patterns, since actual muslin's more expensive. Other items of note: it's self service unless you're buying silk or more than 15 yards of anything. I would add 2-3 inches to what you buy so you can true the fabric, since it'll be a little warped. You also have to put away what you find after cutting, otherwise that surly Russian guy's going to get upset with you. read more

Customer: "When is the sale until?" SA: "It's every day. There are no promotions." Customer: "Can I ask, what's wrong with the fabric?" That kind of skepticism makes sense when you walk into this warehouse of bolts and bolts of cotton prints, synthetic blends, leather, canvas, batting, tulle, silk organza, fashion prints, upholstery, trimmings of all sorts. Then you realize that the price you pay is obviously in the lack of organization of this place (bolts are jammed into shelves with the loosest of categorization)! Would it kill them to make some clear signs of where the different types of fabric are? It's all enough to drive a tad crazy the shortest of attention span or slightest OCD (guilty). Love this place. Cheap elastics, tons of fabric selection and no waiting for an employee to come cut your fabric. Best of all worlds. I mostly shop for knit fabrics and can usually find pretty decent ones. It can be hit or miss though. Sometimes I score big time and sometimes I leave with nothing. This place is worth going to regularly though. The wool selection is usually great. I found a fantastic yellow wool to make a coat out of once and they had plenty to choose from for lining it. Also, huge buckets of zippers and threads. The remnant box is worth a glance since it's even cheaper then the regular fabrics. All this being said, you have to know what you are looking for when you come here. You can't walk in without knowing the difference between a quilting cotton and cotton jersey. This place is like TJ Maxx for fabric. Big selection. Moderately organized - but you really have to be in the right mindset to tackle it. It's self serve for selection and for cutting - they have carts, they have every kind of fabric imaginable. If you go on a weekend - it's insane. Be emotionally prepared to squeeze by people, hear kids screaming, and be generally overwhelmed. IF you have the patience to endure through searching for fabrics - the prices are fantastic. You'll get higher quality fabric (designer) for cheap. I'm a quilter and had SO MUCH FUN searching for the perfect fabrics for the baby quilt I wanted to make for my future kid. Absolutely the most amazing fabric store ever! Go here and plan to get lost in rolls and rolls of wonderful fabrics. Everything and anything is what they have here. And the prices, amazingly cheap. Almost all cut fabric is 50% off. Warning, be prepared to work... you have to cut all your own fabric, tag it and put the bolts away (most difficult part). It's so big and amazing the I tend to forget where I got the things I have! If you're a sewer traveling to the Minneapolis area or Mall of America you must make a stop here. I've been to fabric stores in Chicago and NY and this by far is my favorite due to the big selection and cheap prices.
