The best fabric store for garment sewing in the Twin Cities, hands down. Exceptionally well-curated.

I am taking the time to review Calico Edina hoping that others will be warned. First thing to…read morerealize is that they are just a middleman between customer and local upholstery professionals. So for that you will pay at least 50% more. I have had two experiences with this store..first many years ago required a re-do and they finally got it right. Very small project. Returned there fall 2023 for 8 dining room chair "slip seats". The experience was awful. I started with one employee who I later learned was very new. She gave me a quote 1/2 the price that the next more experienced employee did. I asked BOTH TIMES if they would like at least one or more of the chairs to be sure they would fit etc. Answer was no. After the 6-8 weeks of waiting I called to see where the chairs are. No one knew but it seemed that the project had not even been started. They got it going and I picked the "slip covered" cushions up. WARNING pretty much impossible to get back into the chair for the average consumer and they do have a service to do that but it was NEVER OFFERED. I got them home and nothing fit. Long story after that in dealing with MARY the store manager and one of the rudest people I have ever dealt with as a customer. They said they would send the couple that did them to my home to put them in. One guy came to my house and did not even attempt to put them back in. Brought no tools He said it would have been much better to have the chairs when doing the work. He said he would have to take them away. I was not going to permit that as who is liable for any damage? CC would not be as I did not pay for that service. I then got a local very reputable provider who came and put them together in less than 30 minutes. Absolutely only tool needed was a small drill and experience. I don't honestly know what the story was with the guy Calico sent to my home. I would not use Calico but go straight to a reliable upholsterer; . The manager told me she knows nothing about how the job is done. You will pay 1/2 the price and get your project probably much quicker. Lesson learned. Calico has rude employees and very very poor customer service and a top pricetag. They also failed to return what was quite a bit of extra expensive fabric and I had to ask and wait to get that done. Normally you should get that back with final pick up. An awful experience.

I had a client order two 22X22 pillows. Fabric had a large repeat so when they said they only…read moreneeded two yards. I was surprised and told my client it doesn't seem to be enough fabric but the lady that assisted assured my client. My comment was "well, I guess it on them if it's not enough fabric". As soon as the pillows arrived, my client questioned the centering of the pattern. She took coupe to pictures and sent them to me and first thing I noticed was the size. They looked smaller than 22x22. I had my client measure and sure enough it was just over 20x20. We took the pillows back to the store and they measured across the top with the fill inside, not the edge to edge. Being in interior design for over 25 years, never ever experienced any workroom not cut the fabric to be accommodate the pillow size (it's always been cut larger for sewing). This was expensive and with labor, making them over $500 for something that is incorrect. We've tried to work with them but they are not being very cooperative. Very disappointing to say the least. They need to make this right!
