    Holbrook brews.
    Josh G.

I had a couple of reviews in the works that needed to be finished up, but for my 600th review I felt it only made sense that beer takes the head of the table. What kind of head? A square one, that is. And therein lies my horrible joke-y pun that leads us into this solid review for Holbrook's newest brewery, Square Head Brewing. Snuggled away down a road that almost makes you feel like you'll end up in a horror movie is this tiny brew spot. My buddy had driven by a couple of days before and said the place looked super small. He wasn't wrong, yet Square Head works well with what its got and makes a lot of space out of a little. A decent amount of tables/counters/seating on what was probably a lot of reclaimed wood along with a bar area that looked like something out of a voodoo shack in New Orleans. I was diggin' it! When we first strolled in past the food truck parked outside (another positive!), I noticed a table of bottles to the right of the bar. A tasting/pre-release of a bottle? Sounds good to me! The Einars Elderberry aged in whisky barrels was the sample and boy did it hit the palate right. I loved the semi fruity and oaky flavors that burst through. I can't compare it to its non-barrel-aged counterpart as this version was significantly better. Beyond this initial jolt of deliciousness, things continued in a relatively positive direction. Certain beers were a little oddly enjoyable like The Only Explanation, a brown ale brewed with hemp seeds that gave it a little earthy, nutty aftertaste, and The Occasional Pause, an amber ale with cinnamon, habanero (you heard that right) and aged in whisky barrels which gave the brew an interestingly subtle beginning with plenty of unexpected heat by the end of the sip. A few others were pretty decent too like Flu Shot, their winter ale, and You Were Never Here, the milkshake NEIPA. I didn't love Suite Solitude, the cream ale, as it almost tasted flat. The other (understandable) downer was the multiple crossed out beers on the menu. It was unfortunate these had kicked because some of them sounded outstanding, but therein lies the tricky line Square Head walks as a small batch brewery. Nevertheless, having enough other intriguing stuff does help with this dilemma. What also helps are those aforementioned bottles. There were several types in Square Head's mini fridge and better yet, they was running a super awesome deal: most of the smaller oz. bottles were 2 for $15 and if you spent that much on a bottle purchase you would receive any style pint glass for $5. I snagged that Einars Elderberry and a bottle of a barrel-aged version of one of those crossed out concoctions (The Other Same Time) along with a beautiful goblet glass all for $20. That price was just unbeatable. Overall, Square Head hits on almost all cylinders. Yeah the place isn't big, but it's got plenty of character and a nice list of brews, albeit some might not be there when you arrive. Hey, the menus were printed with the dates of this past weekend (February 1st - 3rd) so consider that a great reason to return because who knows what awesome brews you'll run into on a second trip. So until then, I'll just cheers myself for 600 reviews with some Square Head-purchased brews.

I love visiting breweries and was really looking forward to this place opening. I finally got the chance to visit a couple weekends ago but was incredibly disappointed in the beer that we got. To start, the decor and feel of this place is exactly what you want from a brewery! It's intimate, nice amount of seating, warm lighting, and was quiet enough to hang out and talk. There was almost a full board of beers featuring their own beers and some guest taps. We got a Belgian dubbel and a milkshake IPA. Both beers were sadly undrinkable. The dubbel tasted so light I doubted there was any ABV; it was like I was drinking a watered down iced coffee...and the milkshake IPA tasted flat and sad. Maybe something was off with their taps that day but I won't be rushing back. They just opened up so I'll give them some time to work out the kinks and re-review.

one of the most interesting/ cool breweries i've ever been too! the bartender dave was SO awesome and told us how they came up with several beers and we learnt so much! i would DEFINITELY RECOMMEND the espresso martini beer. i'm not even a beer person OR dark beer person but it was SO SO good! every single beer is so unique and like nothing i've ever tried! 10/10 if your looking for something different and unique in a brewery!

Dave and his son Brad are great people running a really good microbrewery. Always nice to drop in when visiting my parents from out of state. The Christmas decor was outstanding as well. Very homey feel and good conversation.

What a fun beer selection! Small spot but it has a good vibe. Try the pistachio Pilsner! Owner is super chill and very informative of his beer selection.

I loved the space, and there's a wide variety of beer (and cider and kombucha). We shared a flight and unfortunately didn't like any of the four we picked. It didn't help that three of the four beers were pretty warm. Maybe it was just an off day or we picked the wrong drafts, but this was a miss for both of us.

I think this is the best brewery on Long Island ! The beer is just amazing, so many options to choose from. They have a great selection, from light to dark. They have good options as well !!! The ambiance is great, very calm & pretty! My new favorite brewery! I highly recommended it!!!

I had never heard of this place until I was around the block at 1940s and looked at what was near me. This location is super nice and a total hidden gem in the area. I was totally in love with how it is decorated inside, it's nice and peaceful and romantic. It's literally a perfect place to grab a beer and talk to someone. I had the winter out which was very good, it reminded me a lot of the leinenkugel vanilla porter. We only stayed for one beer because we were both exhausted but we will definitely be back to try some more.

This is a very small but a really cool brewery! It's dark lit and very hip. The owner David and his son Brad are amazing and very personable. They took the time to explain their beers to us. Each beer was very different from the one before. The flavors they were able to get out of each of them were incredible. I highly recommend stopping in for great beers!

What's not to like?! A local brewery with good beers and a good crew. They also host local food trucks and bakers. Love their glassware. Likes what you drank... buy a bottle and take it home! Love the location and the indoor decor

Great beer, I really like the nice shirt beer. The location is a bit hidden, cozy, with a large selection of small batch craft beers.

It just fits so perfectly right in between a four and five star feeling. Reason? Well let me tell you! Last Friday I knocked out another brewery on this lengthy Island by hitting up the last Holbrook spot I hadn't ventured to (this one, or course). Nestled in a similar building-setup as its fellow Lincoln Ave brethren (Spiderbite and 1940's), Saint James is arguably a tad smaller (for a taproom, that is). That doesn't take away from it's cozy style. Yeah, you're kinda sitting in what looks like a small warehouse with the actual brewery in front of you, but that little "taproom" area works just fine (better than fine). It's got a little beer flair going which shouldn't be overlooked. I strolled in with my buddy and we were joyfully greeted by a woman who treated us as if we were close friends in her home. She offered to change the channel on the massive TV, raise the music, and even had a charger handy for my dying phone. Service with several smiles! Beyond the hospitality, we were given the rundown about Saint James and it's beer. A farm brewery with Belgian ale roots that's rockin' New York ingredients? Sounds good to me! This meant dubbel and tripel choices as well as a few other palate-worthy brews. With five to choose from, a flight was what we went for, though it was a bit steeper in price ($15) than usual. Hey, it's cool with me. I'll support local beer until my liver craps out (here's hopin' that takes a while!). I digress.... Let's break it down like this. Five brews: Muré (blackberry porter) Biere des Chevaliers (dubbel) Fraise (strawberry fruit beer) Tripel (I think you can figure this one out) Rachelle Blanche (witbier) Those two fruit-based ales gave way to some great original flavors while staying true to the Belgian background. The dubbel hit the spot and was exactly what I expected from it. The downer was the tripel. I don't know what happened here, but something tasted...off. Really off. Great, the thing had a 9% ABV, but it didn't have the heavy punch a tripel usually dances with. Things were made up when I met Rachelle. Rachelle Blanche, that is. She was a wondrous witbier bringing out some fruity notes accompanied by a wheat flavor that balanced things out perfectly. I was torn on purchasing a bottle, but she (it?) pushed me in the buying direction (along with a beautiful glass to add to the collection, albeit a pricy endeavor). Overall, so maybe things sound kind of 4-stars-ish, but Saint James Brewery deserves that extra half of a fifth celestial body. Alas, I can't say it warrants the kick up to 5 though. Therein lies the deadly half star conundrum. In the end, just know Saint James will grant you a brewery and beers almost entirely worthy of returning for. Take the trip and be the judge on the fraction that'll make up that final twinkle.
