For the 15 years that I lived in Highland Square, I have to admit I was not into vinyl at the time. Final is become a new hobby for me and I am excited about rebuilding my music collection and getting that authentic crisp vintage sound while listening to my favorite albums. I knew of Square records because it is around some of my favorite restaurants. Highland Square is loaded with great restaurants and also the movie theater I proposed to my wife at. I was excited to go into Square and was able to walk away with some sweet albums. I will be back! read more

The variety that this store offers is my favorite thing about it. I can leave with an indie, pop, alternative and R&B record all in the same bag. Owner is very cool as well. Highly suggest making a stop and give yourself some time as the new section is huge. read more

As a young man beginning my collection of vinyl records, I was getting tired of ordering online only to get morbidly warped records that were unlistenable and skipped very frequently. I came here on 04/02/22 and was greeted at the door with a smile. I was welcomed by a friendly environment with other customers respecting each other's space, even when in a relatively small building. When I was ready to check out it was quick and stress-free. I will be coming here again for the great collection as well. They have free stickers too :) read more

Better than Music Saves. They have the indie stuff covered, but not to the point of overkill. There is no altar to Thurston Moore in the back. They have a decent selection of older vinyl and cds along with newer singles and lps. Good used section, too. The location in Highland Square is hip and very walkable. There are a couple of other fun businesses nearby. They even sell books and mags that are music related. I heard they were going to name the store Destroy All Sweaters, but didn't want to get sued. read more

Justin V. nails it in his review, so I won't add much here except to say: Dave earns a lot of points for ordering anything and everything you ask for. I make a point of shopping here even when I live 15 minutes away by car and walking distance from a Best Buy. You should, too. Then hang around the neighborhood and check out Angel Falls and the restaurants. A note on parking, since the response options Yelp provides don't cover it: There's a free, well lighted, municipal lot directly across the street. I lived a few doors down from Square Records for six months and never saw the lot filled. read more

This shop is such a gem! I have found so many great records and CDs at Square, including some pretty rare steals. I also love that I can buy tickets for shows at Grog Shop here without having to pay the online fees. The one negative is that it is a very small store and it can get kind of cramped if you go in with friends. Overall, this is a solid, quality local record shop. I have never left empty-handed. Though I didn't grow up here, my family has been living in Akron for several years now. I'm slowly learning my way around every time I visit. Today was my first time visiting this store and I was pleasantly surprised. I went to school in Bloomington, IN, which has three amazing record stores, and now live in Cincinnati, where I quickly discovered the amazingness of Shake It Records. It was here, however, that I easily found three items that I had been unable to find elsewhere. It's a small store, but has an incredible selection of vinyl. The staff seemed nice, too. They had all the U2 vinyls I wanted, but didn't have any of the Killers albums I wanted. Strangely enough the dude at the counter scoffed when I asked. I didn't remember telling a joke though. Strangest thing though, everyone was just standing around skimming through records and nobody talked to anybody else. Some people were even so self-aware as to stand a certain way and skim a certain way in case someone noticed them so they could look cool. read more

While now I'm a Cleveland snob, there was once a time when I lived in the backwoods of Ohio Amish country and considered Akron to be the pinnacle of civilization. And one of those outposts of civilization was this place in lovely Highland Square. It's small-ish for a record store, but the selection is truly outstanding, and their used CDs are nothing to sneeze at, either. If you're jonesing for the latest Nickelback, they probably won't have it, but if you like Nickleback you probably have bigger problems in your life. read more

Music is my crack and Square Records is my dealer. While some might view the size of the store as small, a music head will notice they simply keep the stock tight and to-the-point. While new acts and new releases are constantly on hand, the real thrill for me is the great cross-section of excellent used music that is always updated. On top of this, their prices cannot be beat. Racks are at a nice height, the space is bright and vibrant, the few employees there are friendly, they regularly feature local art in the back, and they have a cat mascot on hand. If/when this store closes, my music buying will drop to almost nil. read more

It is no shocker that I am going to write a review on a spot I dig in. Record shops are dope, when you combined that with ones that support the locals and have a great selection that spans all over the map, you get my attention and respect. Shops like this really speak to us diggers and people who collect. This is a perfect local record shop that has a bit of everything. Great record shop, they have a good selection of new as well as used titles. Everything is reasonably priced and they have a lot of different styles. They have CDs and some tapes but come go for the records, there's something for everyone. They also host in store art shows as well as in store live music from time to time, so that's something else to look out for. read more

We were in town for a family reunion and stopped by so my son and I could dig. Small shop but they have the good stuff, no filler. Expertly organized. I wish we had a cool little shop like this in Houston. Both my son and I found some good good including a record I have been looking for for 20 years. I think maybe 1/100 times I have left this store without buying something. Easily the best store within 50 miles of Akron. I'd say even farther, but I can't be totally sure. Perfectly organized, great prices, awesome selection, and a constantly rotating selection of used vinyl has kept me coming back at least once a month for 5 years and almost never leaving empty handed. Occasionally they host shows featuring local bands in the space in the back of the store that now has more used records and doubles as an art gallery which also features local artists. We were just meeting up with a friend in Akron on our back to NYC from Columbus. It was before 12pm when we walked by this store but because I am such a nerd, I looked in through the window. I told myself we need to pay this place a visit before we leave town --- and so we did. I've got to say, even though this isn't a huge store like Amoeba or anything, it has a beautiful selection of records. The owner clearly has very good taste in various musical styles, including rock (metal, alternative, avant garde), jazz, world, folk, even film scores. My wife selected some pretty incredible used classical vinyls, I got Tigran Hamasyan's new EP (For Gyumri), a new album by The Mystery of Bulgarian Voices, and a used copy of Miles Davis Live in Europe (Antibes Jazz Fest). I saw so many more things that I would totally bring home if I had infinite wealth. But because I don't, I walked out of the store half broken-hearted, half delighted. People, help me go back and buy the stuff --- with your own money. And I should also mention that the gentleman in the store (probably the owner) is also incredibly nice to us! read more

Square records is amazing most likely my favorite record store in northeast ohio next to my minds eye. The only trouble is they have different stuff all the time. If you see something at square in the used bin buy it that you will never see it for as cheap as he is selling it all sorts of finds worth going weekly! read more

The best prices and a decently diverse selection. It's not really a specialty shop, but does have a robust section for various genres. This is the first place I go shopping and I rarely go other places except to compare, or to get deep selections of specialty genres. IMO, this is the best record shop in Ohio (especially for my needs) and I can't think of one that compares outside of this state. read more
