Well... I don't know exactly how I feel about this place. While I didn't completely hate it I also did not fall in love with it for a couple of reasons. First and foremost, our server was very nice and the service was really great, for that only I would come back to this place. For the things I did like: My burger was cooked a perfect medium rare, not over cooked nor under cooked. The fries were really tasty, not salty at all and they were enough for two people to share so that was nice. The pickle that came with our meal was deep fried. (Oh my gosh, genius!) Place wasn't too crowded, so my fiance and I could talk without having to scream. Now, for the not so fun, things I didn't like: The price. $35+ for 2 burgers, fries and 2 drinks. Call me cheap, but this seems a little steep for burgers, especially burgers that weren't the most amazing thing in the world. Decor... or lack of decor. I didn't like that the burger didn't come with fries and you had to buy them separately... Did burger and fries break up or something? They're like a 2 for 1 kind of thing.... I think if I lived in McKinney or at least closer, I MAY give this place another chance, but honestly, I rather go somewhere else. I don't think the money you pay here is worth it. In one word: Incredible. You wouldn't think something as basic as burgers to be so darn good. It is. First of all, located in the heart of McKinney, great location, great walking town. Secondly, walked in and got a table for 6 on a Friday night. The restaurant was busy, but overly so. Started with their crunchy wings, sweet potato fries, and Mac-n-cheese appetizers. These were all great! The wings were great, I would've preferred more, but I look for any excuse to eat wings. Crunchy, tasty, great flavor. The Mac-n-cheese had subtle flavors, smokey, chicken, cheese, noodles, just great! The sweet potato fries were also great. Shoestring style and served lightly salted with an incredible garlic aioli. I don't even like sweet potatoes, but these fries were great. The burgers - divine. I had the Smokey Jack Burger. Tender, fresh meat, melted cheeses, onion strings, perfectly toasty bun. It was juicy, flavorful, beefy goodness. Their beef really is spectacular. Rounded out dinner with some desserts for the table. Apple Pies (with and without cheddar), citrus flavored fried "donuts" with sugar and cinnamon. We definitely will be going back! Don't miss this place, they take burgers to the next level. read more

I was in town visiting my roommate in McKinney and I had arrived pretty late, and according to her a lot of places in town had closed by 9. so after careful thought we came to Square Burger, and I must say I was impressed! The service was friendly and attentive (even for the crowd that was there about 10 at night) the ambience was lovely, I described the feel as a type of "Pleasantville" downtown restaurant. It felt like I was in the epitome of a small town semi-upscale "gastropub" and it was cool. We split an order of regular fries which were good and was definitely large enough to split between the two of us. I ordered the Mushroom-Border burger, and loved it! The mushrooms were marinated well, and the burger was piled high along with lettuce, tomato, red onions, and fresh avocado, but what probably got me was the fried pickle, which is hands down my favorite fried pickle that I have ever tried. I'm drooling as I speak! We were planning on going to a separate location for dessert but our server mentioned their ice cream sandwiches (where they have 3 different kinds) so we decided to go ahead and try one of each of them. There was a snickerdoodle cookie with strawberry ice cream, carrot cake cookie with cream cheese ice cream (we were most skeptical of this one), and a chocolate chip cookie with vanilla bean ice cream. The snickerdoodle was what you would expect from a snickerdoodle ice cream sandwhich, and the chocolate chip cookie sandwich were a bit too underdone for my taste (if you like cookie dough ice cream you'll love this), but the carrot cake cookie and cream cheese ice cream sandwich blew me away. I'm personally not a big fan of cream cheese anything even in terms of sweets, but the ice cream was extremely good, and although you could still taste the cream cheese, it wasn't the intense flavor you would usually get, paired with the perfectly made cookie went down as our favorite dessert of the night. Lobster Mac and Cheese is the best! I saw on the menu that it had peas in it and thought I wouldn't mind that. I didn't love the peas, but asked the server before we left how it was prepared and she said that we can get it without peas next time. I will definitely have this again. My daughter loved her grilled cheese and tomato soup. The fries and onion strings were amazing and the garlic aioli was better than ranch! read more

Went to square burger for the first time the other night with a group of friends. We all ordered something diffrent and shared and ordered a small of each appetizer to try. We were not impressed. The food was just ok. Our waitress was really nice, and they did have a great beer selection but we would not go back again. The burger was just ok. It seems they care more about presentation more than flavor. I ordered my burger med and it didn't have much flavor. For the price, I feel it is to expensive for what you are getting. I eat in downtown mckinney all the time, but I have now taken this place off my list to eat at. read more

The burgers were amazing!!! Our server was questionable, he may have been having an off day, but that prevented a 5 star review. I had the lamb burger and it was so juicy and cooked to perfection. My boyfriend had the spicy tuna burger which was also delicious. I highly recommend the mac and cheese with chicken and sundried tomatoes. The beer selection was on point. This spot is nothing but a winning lottery ticket. You continue to cash forever. I found this place a few years back and can say no other burger joint compares hands down. The chef here takes her craft seriously and is very inventive. It is nestled in McKinney's downtown square and is very modern. When you walk in you immediately notice the wall of craft beers in front of you and the endless wine menu up on the wall. Most everything on the menu is local produce and beef and you can tell from the first to the last bite. Appetizers are great but onion rings here are a true delicacy. Sweet yellow onions dip into a secret batter and fried to perfection. This tower sure takes two to eat. It is severed with a spicy mayo that compliments the real sweetness from the rings themselves. Wait I am not done. Burgers are upscale and have a pleasant little twister inspired by the chefs palette. My go to staple is her version of the western burger. All local beef cooked to your order (medium). Topped with fresh veggies and one of those perfectly cooked onion rings, and aged cheddar (you can tell it has a bite). She then finishes this off with a homemade barbecue that compliments every bite perfectly. Finally for dessert. The only dish you need to worry about are the donuts (if you can get them). This dish sells out quick. We call them donuts but they are really beignets. Covered in a delightful sprinkle of cinnamon and sugar and served with a tasty house made chocolate ganache that has the chefs twist on it. The ganache has a hint of orange in it making it refreshing and delectable all in the same bite. This is one of my top spots and would recommend not leaving McKinney without dropping in. Service is friendly, but not good. Not good at all. Since some of the waitstaff are teenagers, they can't tell you anything about the beers. It doesn't matter much to me, because I already know about most of the offerings. Burgers are excellent if they are cooked properly. Mine was overcooked last night. My wife's was perfect. I really want to patronize this place because the beef is local and grass-fed. I don't mind paying extra. If you don't like the burgers here (if they are properly cooked), then perhaps your taste buds have become accustomed to cheap beef. All this being said, Twisted Root is still my fave. read more

Had a number of friends suggest this place to us and we finally went. I expected alot, but was a little disapointed. The Atmosphere is great and the beer selection is awesome! Service is friendly and do their job, but most are teenagers and you will get the service of a teenager. We both got hamburgers and they were good, but not great. Maybe it was because I had high expectations. Maybe it was because my wife and I dont go out to eat that much without the kids. Maybe it was the 2 ladies with infants in wooden high chairs (not on casters) that were constantly pushing them back and forth to entertain them (they must have liked the fingernail on the chalkboard like screeching sound it made), but it will be a while before we go back. I had the Smokey Burger and it was great. The meat was juicy and flavorful and lightly seasoned. The flavor of the meat definitely stood on its own. They serve the meat at "medium" temp unless otherwise ordered. I found it to be more on the medium rare side. While I would have enjoyed a steak served at this temp I prefer my burgers a little more cooked than my steaks. Next time I will order it medium well. read more

Not your typical on the Mckinney Square rustic restaurant with it's modern decor and atmosphere. I really enjoyed the minimalist, yet almost chic/trendy approach to style. With two walls completely glass, you have a great view of all the hustle and bustle of the square from the comfort of your booth or table. The beer, wine, chef specials, and dessert menu can be found on a large chalkboard wall. While some reviews have mentioned this is a negative because it is inconvenient and hard to read, we were seated at the furthest booth from the wall and had no trouble at all. Our server Elliott was friendly and professional. I say professional because there aren't many restaurants nowadays that you get a "sir" or ma'am" with everything. We started with the Macaroni and Cheese Gratin with Grilled Chicken and Sundried Tomatoes. Knowing it was an appetizer to be shared, they served it in two bowls, one for each of us. I liked this touch and even more so loved the rich flavor of the Macaroni and Cheese. Yum! For our meal, I ordered the Smoky Jack Burger with sweet potato fries and my husband ordered the Bacon Cheddar BBQ Burger with the crispy house-cut fries. We decided to split everything so we could try it all! The Smoky Jack Burger was hands down our favorite. While both patties were cooked perfectly - juicy, not greasy with the delicious seasoning - the flavors and textures of the mozzarella, Monterey Jack, bacon, and onion strings combined well together! While I really liked the BBQ burger, I did not feel there was enough sauce and I think the saltiness of the cheddar combined with the saltiness if the seasoned onion strings is too much. The sweet potato fries we agreed were some of the best we have ever had! Cut thinly, they were crispy and delicious. I didn't care particularly for the garlic aioli that came with them, but they didn't even need a dipping sauce! I also really enjoyed the hand-cut fries as well, though will definitely be ordering the sweet potato fries again! Overall a really great experience, and we can't wait to come back! read more

I eat on the McKinney square as much as possible to support my hood. Square burger is in an old shop that still has it's original big windows. Great view of the square wherever you sit. Service is ok, we always have some young kid just starting out as a waiter trying his/her best. I am fine with that. The burgers are ok, the sweet potato fries are great. I headed North in search of Burgertopia For the record, they also have lamb, turkey and salmon but this time I was out for MEAT Downtown Mckinney is cute and the glass walled windows at Square burger are inviting (though there is no real sign on the outside just a small etched burger insignia on the door). The neon lit bar is inviting and with 30 beers on tap as well as all the usual alcohol libations this place is worth the drive The waitresses (and waiters) are gorgeous and friendly, and the interiorlooks more like a nightclub but its certainly family oriented with parents, kids, oldies and teens all gathered at tables and booths As this was my first burger, I steered away from the more creative variations and went for the stadium burger which had onions and a great spicy mustard aioli When you have never eaten a burger before, its hard to write a review and compare but...Man oh man was it good. During our "downtown walk"... The kids were hungry so wanted to get something simple and fast. Lollipop lamb chops for me. Great tasting dish but it is a bit light. Spicy Tuna burger for the wife... The bread was a bit "chewy" (thinking frozen). Kids had the kids burger and spaghetti... Spaghetti was a bit salty and the sauce tasted more store bought than homemade. Good burger. Grass fed, local beef. Cooked just right. I had the mushroom burger with a side of the caramelized onion marmalade, and that marmalade was darn tasty. Next time I'll try the bleu burger or the lamb burger. The burgers are swankier than most, with toppings/options like the ahi tuna burger or the "high society" with prosciutto. They seemed proud of their beers (not a beer drinker). The fries were nothing spectacular - I liked the onion strings though. Make a trip to McKinney and be a SQUARE! Well, at least try their food, it is good! I have been several times to Square Burger and will continue to go back for their great food and expansive beer list. Make sure you check the chalk board for their current beer list and specials. Nestled on the corner of the old downtown "square," this burger joint has massive windows on two sides that brighten the restaurant and make it a great place to eat. The ceiling is almost as high as the Dallas skyline, you will not feel cramped as you dine in this great eatery. If you can, grab a booth next to a window and people watch at lunch while you munch on your meal. The last time I went, I had their Ahi Tuna Burger with a spicy aoli and it was out of this world. A different take on a burger, but I enjoyed it! Their fries are shoestring and just crispy and salty enough. A+! The fried pickle spear that accompanies your entree never seems to last long on my plate. Crispy, crunchy, and delicious. One of the best fried pickle spears I've had. The breading is what sets it apart. Their beef burgers are phenomenal too! They're juicy and will not disappoint. Whatever you decide on for your main course, DO NOT pass up dessert. I am not sure what has happened to this establishment. I have been coming on and off for the last 5 years. This evening, I decided to come for my birthday. The meal took 45 mins to come out. All of the burgers brought to the table were over cooked and not the way we had ordered. Lots of staff, few tables, and we never had full glasses. After we were finished eating, the check was not offered in a timely manner. This was a disappointing meal. With so many others choices, I don't foresee coming back again. read more

A joy to eat and worth more than they cost. Burgers on the other hand, not. A good, locally sourced beef downgraded by something other than salt and pepper then overly dry (probably due to lack of fat content). Bacon cut into small pieces rather than strips to portion control their costs (nobody should ever do this, ever). LTO added to my bun although not listed as a topper on the menu... why do I want iceberg lettuce and a tomato slice on a burger with sauteed mushrooms?!
